Squaw Valley was praised by Garland because it has all Olympic facilities in one area except for cross - country events. Garland noted that at the 1952 Olympics in Oslo spec tators traveled 75 miles to see the giant slalom. At Cor tina in 1956, they twisted 25 miles over a torturous road to see speed skating, he said.
