Women-Slalom, Linda Mey

combined, Beverly Anderson,
Mullan, Ida.
Top U.S. Prospect
Miss Meyers emerged as
the top prospect for the Unit
ed States in the Olympic
Games on the basis of her
showings that brought her
twin wins and a fifth place.
She was edged out of the
combined by Miss Anderson,
who failed to win a title, but
who put on such a great all
around performance that offi
cials rated her the best. She
scored 3.03 points to 3.86 for
Miss Meyers, with finishes of
third in the downhill, second
in the giant slalom and sixth
in the slalom. The skier with
the least points in the three
events is listed as the combin
ed champion.
Behind Miss Meyer in the
downhill Monday came Renie
Cox of Port Leyden, N.Y.,
and Miss Anderson was third.
In the men's downhill, Wer
ner blanketed the field. He
was clocked in 1:30.4. Sec
ond place went to Ken Lloyd
of Bishop, Calif., in 1:34.5.
The wide margin of victory
shocked Werner.
Most of the top skiers head

Squaw Valley
Site Praised
Squaw Valley, Calif.-IUPD-John
J. Garland, U.S. dele
gate to the International
Olympic committee, today
hailed the Squaw Valley site
for the 1960 Winter Olympics
as "a new departure.".
He predicted that the group
will be "very pleased" with
a report he will make to it
in May in Munich.
Squaw Valley was praised
by Garland because it has all
Olympic facilities in one area
except for cross - country
events.
Garland noted that at the
1952 Olympics in Oslo spec
tators traveled 75 miles to
see the giant slalom. At Cor
tina in 1956, they twisted 25
miles over a torturous road
to see speed skating, he said.
