f. 2A MAIL TRIBUNE, Mtdford, Oregon, Sunday, February 8, 1939 AAUW Members, Guests To Hear Pakistan Woman - Mrs. Rehana Asif Latif Is lam of Pakistan, widely trav eled and outstanding student of economics, will speak to members and guests of Med ford branch, American Asso ciation of University Women, at a meeting set for Saturday, February 14. Luncheon will be served at 1 p.m. at Mon Desir inn near Central Point, Soprano To Be Here A noted linger. Miss Blanche Thebom, will present a concert at the Medford High school auditorium under the auspices of the Civic Music 'association Wednesday, Feb ruary 18. Accompanying Mis The bom at the piano for the third concert of the season will be William Hughes. Miss Thebom, a mezzo-soprano, is the first American woman ever to sing in Mos cow's Bo!shoi Opera and the first American woman con cert artist to appear in Rus sia in more than 20 years. She sang for the United States at the Brussels Fair and dur ing 1957 toured for the State department through South and Central America. Admission to the concert, which begins at 8 p.m., is by season membership ticket only. Club To Sponsor Centennial Dance Hilltoppers Square Dance club will observe Oregon's 100th anniversary of . state hood with a Centennial dance to be held Saturday, February 14. The square dance will be held at the Hilltoppers' hall in the old Wagner Creek school, two miles west of Tal ent on Wagner Creek road. It is thought the rustic at mosphere of the hall will be especially in keeping with the Centennial theme.. Costumes are optional for the dance, with western style of the Gay 90s suggested. "Handlebar" mustaches for the men and lace bonnets for the ladies will be furnished those attending. Women are requested to bring a box lunch, suitable for two, to be auctioned at intermission. , The lunch will also be the admission price. Coffee will be served by the Hiltoppers. Francis Cronin and guest callers will call the squares. 4 Medical Auxiliary Slates Meeting The Women's auxiliary to the Jackson County Medical society will meet Wednesday, February 11 at 7 p.m. at the home of Mrs. William Miller, : 1307 Queen Anne avenue. Mrs. James Luce is co-hostess, and will be assisted by Mrs. Fred Lorish. The program will empha size the Oregon Centennial, with the history of the Rogue valley being presented by Mrs. Jack Sanborn, whose ancestors were early setters in the Rogue river valley. -.. . with Mrs. Islam's talk follow ing. The event is open to branch members, their guests and members of AAUW study groups. Reserevations are to be made with Mrs. Nils Edin, luncheon chairman, SPring 2-9911, or Mrs. Joseph Clark, SPring 3-1504. Mrs. Gene Chamberlain and Mrs. Verne Wolthoff are also on the luncheon committee. "Mrs. Islam, now working for her doctorate at the Uni versity of California, Berke ley, is the wife of the deputy director of audit of the Pakis tan government. Her father has been administrator of the Pakistan Refugee Rehabilita tion administration and in earlier years held important positions in the government of India. All through the years, both during and between periods of study, Mrs. Islam has been active in cultural and welfare organizations and given ser vice to her government. She is a member of the Pakistan Federation of U n i v ersity Women and is one of the two "first international grant holders from Pakistan" to study in the United States un der AAUW sponsorship in 1958-59. Her grant is given by the Anchorage, Alaska, branch of AAUW. The Interior Decorating Study group of AAUW will have a field trip to the Hern dobler Furniture company in Ashland, Thursday, Febru ary 12 at 8 p.m. Members are to meet at the shop, 125 East Main street, in Ashland. Following the time at the store, the group is invited to the home of Mrs. Marion Mc Caulley, 645 Glenwood drive, Ashland, for a social hour. M ill rw - v ) 3i nJ&? , k fill U if5rsi f 1111 C a ' Chapter to Hear Students Speak Roberta Sleeter, who spent last summer in Norway as an exchange student, and Sissel Frogner, who is attending Medford High school as an exchange student from that same country, will speak at the Wednesday, February 11, meeting of Chapter AA of PEO Sisterhood. The meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Robert Sleeter, 39 Berkeley Way, with luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Assisting Mrs. Sleeter will be Mors. Otto Frohnmayer and Mrs. E. B. DeVoe. Two Speakers Slated by Club Two speakers are slated for a meeting of Jackson County Republican Woman's club on Monday, February 16 at 12 noon, at Ping's Garden. Mayor John Snider, who is a Jackson county member of the Oregon Centennial com mission, will speak on the subject of legislation pertain ing to the Centennial. Mrs. Harry A. Pallady, Portland, will also be a guest of the club and will explain the National Federation of Republican Women. The Jack son county club is not cur rently affiliated with the fed eration, according to local president Mrs. Murray Gardi- Luncheon reservations are binding, and must be made with Mrs. Ernest Ruegger, SPring 2-9958, by Wednesday, February 11. Kiwanian Dames Announce Coffee Another "in the current se ries of coffees will be given by the Kiwanian Dames on Wednesday, February 11, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at the home of Mrs. Emerson Anderson, 2131 Hillcrest rd. Wives 'of all Kiwanis club members are invited to at tend. , Rector to Speak At Guild Session St. Elizabeth's guild will meet Friday, February 13, at 12 noon at the Parish house for luncheon followed by a business meeting and pro gram. The Rev. George R. V. Bol ster will speak on the mission ary work of the church. . All women of St. Mark's church are invited to attend. The Jacksonville museum, parlor, fur nished in 1959 as parlors were furnished a hundred' years ago, was filled with hand some women and pretty girls Monday afternoon who posed for Tribune pictures. Shown here seated at the parlor melodeon is Gayle Offenbacher. and Deborah Zus pann stands at her side. This melodeon, made in 1738, was brought to Oregon by an early-day minister and later was the prop erty of the late Miss Alice Hanley. The ' handsome rosewood case is handmade, and the reeds of this organ - type instrument were made in Austria in 1322. Gayle wears a lavender and while checked silk dress given to the museum by Mrs. Alfred S. V. Carpenter. The dress, about 100 years old, belonged to a great-aunt of Mrs. Carpenter. AAUW Book Review group will meet at the home of Mrs. Lloyd Neilson, 2130 East Jackson boulevard, Wednes day, February 11, at 1 pjn. Mrs. Elmer Ness will review the book, "The Masters of De ceit," by J. Edgar Hoover. Mrs. John Duffy will be co-hostess. Mackay - Brannan Rites Announced Talent - Miss Glenda Bran nan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Brannan, route 1, box 28, Talent, became the bride of Harry S. Mackay, son of Mrs. Mabel E. Mackay, 333 B street, Ashland, in a cere mony held January 29 at the Wedding Bell chapel in Santa Ana, Calif. The Rev. A. S. Bash of the Christian church officiated at double ring rites held at four o'clock in the afternoon. The bride attended Talent High school and is employed by Dr. Christian L. Hald, Ash land. The bridegroom attend ed Ashland High school and is stationed at EI Toro Marine Base, Santa Ana. Calif, and is scheduled to be transferred to Japan for 14 months tour of duty. Hostesses Give Dinner Parties Mrs. Robert Hart and Mrs. Floyd Hart recently gave two formal dinners in a series they are planning at Mrs. Floyd Hart's home, Pinehaven. The events were attended by 38 guests. Women Attend Van Gogh Show Mrs. E. Tucker, Jr., 333 Lynwood avenue, r Mrs. Em mitt M. Tucker, Ashland, and Mrs. Stanley C. Horton, 44 Windsor avenue, have return ed from Portland where they spent two days - viewing sthe Vincent van Gogh show " at the Portland Art Museum. The three women, all mem bers of the Southern Oregon Society of Artists, also . at tended two evening art lec tures at the museum while there. ' . Concert Planned By Philharmonic The Philharmonic Society of Southern Oregon orchestra is now entering the final phase of rehearsals for a con cert that will be held later this month at the Medford High school auditorium. Littrells Home From Vacation Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Litrell, 140 Greenway circle, returned recently from a six weeks trip in California and Baja, Cali fornia. The couple left Medford December 18 and visited Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Brainerd, Pe- taluma, Calif., and grand-' children, Lyn and Jan, during the Christmas holidays. From there they traveled to Carmel where they visited with Mr. and Mrs. James Towne, form er Medford residents. Other stops made by the Littrells were at Disneyland, Laguna Beach, San Diego, and Coronado. The couple also spent a week in La Paz, Baja j California, prior to returning to Palm Desert and.
