Stockard agreed. Word spread through the Glenridge corridors as rapidly as if the school had announced that Ansley had personally launched a rocket to the moon. His students raced home that afternoon carrying mimeographed notes for their parents' reaction. Enthusiastic responses flowed in to Ansley and Stockard. "I'm all for it," wrote Marilyn Pierson's father, "and I'd like to request that homework and reading assignments be included. It may help combat TV." Ansley and Stockard agreed that only C students or better could qualify as Saturday scholars since they intended to offer courses not otherwise available to ninth graders. Ansley chose logic and the history of philosophy, which he says "open the avenues of abstract thought that other ninth-grade subjects leave closed." Logic was offered for three hours Saturday mornings and philosophy for three hours during afternoons. The Saturday performances were a smash success. Seventeen boys and girls attended logic lectures and 26 enrolled in philosophy. Like the star of a long run Broadway musical, Ansley played the 15-week season to standing-room-only audiences. Observing their TEE manners, students rose to attention when he entered or left the classroom. Ansley's students chatted endlessly about the' "fallacy of hasty generaliza tion,'' probed Plato and Spinoza, and digested the "Story of Philosophy." "Don't think it's over their heads," cautioned Ansley. "They carry on very intelligent conversations among them selves and with me." All 43 students Principal Adrin Sfodcard, who okayed Saturday class, chats with aagar beavers. completed the courses, averaging only one absence every three Saturdays. And many of central Florida's leading citizens spent their Saturdays visiting the classes. Logic student Dan Durwood com mented, "I'm learning a new way to think it's mental exercise. It helps me with my homework." Mrs. Frank Temple pointed out that schoolwork always came easy to her honor-student daughter, Nancy, who's among the top 1 percent of Florida's ninth graders. "This is the first time that her studies have really kept her busy," her mother added. Late last Spring, a group of eighth graders approached Ansley. "We'd like to pick up where the ninth grade leaves off," the spokesman proposed, "and we'd like to start this Spring." Ansley again responded. He joined Stockard in another strategy briefing, and they compiled a seven-page recom mendation for a Summer program and a renewal of Fall Saturday classes. The school board endorsed both. 'This experiment has led me to the conclusion that our young people can be directed to great scholastic achieve ment,' Ansley says, "that they can car ry the responsibility of our times, and that given the opportunity American boys and girls can be as good students as any in the world or better. "This program has taken most of my free time, but it has given me a satis faction and pride in my students. And most of all, teaching for me has found new rewards." The Summer program functioned on a daily basis and, during the Fall and Winter, Ansley has continued his new interpretation of American education for Saturday's children.
