Flue Fire Firemen said that debris being burned in the fireplace of a residence at 132 Vancouver ave. by a tennant who was moving out caused a flue fire about 7:55 p.m. Sunday evening. Owner of the property is Donald Herried. t Hubcaps Mising - Four hub caps valued at $16.05 were taken Saturday night from a car owned by Theodore Ditt- mer Cook, route 4, box 396, Medford police were told Sunday. The caps were re ported taken while the car was in the city limits. " Theft Reported - A 670x15 tire and wheel and hubcaps were stolen Sunday evening from a pickup owned by Michael A. Altobello, 1004 South Grape St., according to a city police report. The theft occurred while the truck was parked at the Rogue Valley Country club. ' . c Truck in Collision - A truck owned by McGinty Fuel company and operated by Floyd Cecil Wyatt, Jack sonville, was extensively damaged Friday afternoon when it struck a power pole on Crate Lake ave., accord ing to city police. Wyatt told police he lost control of the truck, after the steering mechanism failed. SI. Mary's Siudenls Back from Audition The Shadows, six students from St. Mary's school who sing popular music to guitar accompaniment, were in Port land over the week end for auditions at the Northwest Recording studio. The boys al so sang on Uncle Nat Cohn's "Stars of Tomorrow" televis ion show on KPTV Sunday afternoon. The group, which won a statewide amateur contest at the Oregon State Fair last September, is made up of Dave Mansfield, Tom New- comb, Paul and Bill - Smith, Rick Carrara and Mike Feiss. The Smith brothers play gui tars. Dick Lamont accompan ied the six singers to Port land, and reports that the au dition went well. Tapes were sent to Los Angeles where a decision will be made on fur ther recordings. Tonight the six will re hearse and play tapes of the audition made for their use. Mrs. A. Carrara, mother of Rick, manages the group. The audition was arranged and sponsored by the Earl Heims and Associates, Portland ad vertising agency. Attempted Burglary - Two unidentified subjects failed in an attempt to enter Ken nedy's Furniture store, 1603 North Riverside ave., accord ing to a report made to city police by the owner, Robert C. Kennedy. He said the store's nightwatchman, Harry Beer, had observed the two subjects attempting to gain entrance to the front door of the store. ' . Neuberger Seeks College Student Portland - The yearly search for an outstanding young man or woman to serve for one year, beginning Sept. 1, in the Washington office of Sen. Richard L. Neuberger is now going on in the col leges of Oregon. The search is made because Neuberger wishes to encourage superior students to enter the field of government. He offers each year to an Oregon graduate who has demonstrated high ability and a sincere interest in the problems of govern ment an appointment as re search intern for one year to his staff at a salary of $4,160.38. Neuberger has appointed a selection committee of which Dr. John Swarthout, Dean of Portland State College, is chairman. Other members are W. Forrester Jr., editor, Pendleton East Oregonian; Miss May Darling, member of the state board of education; and Father David H. Fossel man, University of Portland. Candidates for the position are nominated by the political science departments of Ore gon colleges and universities. News About Servicemen Group Organizing Awaits Legal Study Establishing a county parks and recreation commission is pending a study of legal prob lems involved by the district attorney's office, according to County Judge Earl Miller. The Jackson county plan ning commission on Jan. 14 recommended to the county court that a separate parks and recreation commission be established. The recommenda tion followed a suggestion by the county judge who said such a group is needed to han dle the rapidly expanding parks and recreation program expected in the county. The planning commission now has a subcommittee for parks and recreation. If established the parks and recreation commission would have its proposed parks and recreation sites screened by the county planning commis sion and final approval would be given by the county court. Miscellaneous Items Reported Stolen Thefts of groceries and two billfolds, one containing $100, were reported to city police during the week end. Ruby Donald Lowry, 220 South Grape st., told officers that his brown leather wallet containing $100 was taken from his trousers packet some time Friday night. Robert Edwin Mclntyre 309 Lindero dr., reported that his tan wallet containing mis cellaneous identification and business papers was taken from his sedan while it was parked in a downtown park ing lot Saturday afternoon Groceries valued at $12 were taken Saturday after noon from a car owned by Alva Baird, 2840 Elliott st.. while it was parked at the Big Y lot, police were told. Marc of Cave Junction, returned to San Diego, Calif., earlier this .month after a six month tour of duty in the western Pacific aboard the de stroyer USS Shields. The ship recently visited Hong Kong after a 16-day period of fleet operations at sea. Two Injured in Auto Accidents, One Driver Held Two persons were injured m auto accidents during tne week end, state police report ed today. Leon Small, 16, of route 3, box 240, Medford, suffered a head cut and bitten tongue when his car apparently missed the turn near the in tersection of Payne and Fern Valley rds. and went into a ditch, state police said. Small was taken to Rogue Valley hospital by Medford ambulance following the Sun day accident. It was reported that he was treated and released. Ivan Harold Elder, 19,' of route 2, box 245, Central Point, was taken to Sacred Heart hospital by Medford ambulance Sunday following a head-on collision at the in tersection of Table Rock and Kirtland rds., police " said Elder, who is reported in fair condition, is being treated for a possible slight concussion, hospital attendants said. Drivers Lodged The driver of the other car, Robert Stanley Chase, 32, of route 2, box 668B, Central Point, is being held in the county jail on charges of driv ing while under the influence of intoxicating liquor, state police said. The car driven by Chase was apparently east bound on Kirtland rd. and made a right turn onto Table Rock rd., po lice said, when it struck the Elder car head-on. Both cars were damaged beyond repair. Chase was not injured, offic ers said. Saturday, Arnold Ray Pet ersen, 16, of Trail, escaped in jury when the car he was driving went off a bridge over Flat creek and landed on its wheels in hood-deep water. Petersen was cited for viola tion of the basic rule, state police said. The Petersen car was ap parently travelling on Elk Creek rd. when it struck the Flat creek bridge railing, tak ing out 20 feefof railing, state police said. Stock Leaders Move In Narrow Field New York - (UPD - Leading stocks moved narrowly today while issues outside the group used to calculate the averages registered gains run ning above four points. There were some wide losers too, but a majority of shares apeared to favor the upside. The autos held in a narrow rut beset by diverse reports on automobile pro duction which found Ford boosting its output, Buick cutting back, and Chrysler still bogged down by a strike which was cutting off its sup ply of glass. The oils presented a good showing for a time but turn ed irregular later when Rich field plunged six points on declaration of only the usual dividend when something better was anticipated. MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Monday, January 2, 193? 11 Four Youths Jailed For Petty Larceny Two Medford youths and two from Central Point were morning on a charge of petty larceny following their arrest about 5:45 a.m. at Tenth st. and Central ave. They are Robert Curtis Fowler, 18, of 1921 Elm st., Medford; John Peter Taberna, 18, and David Arthur Brown, 18, Central Point; and a 17-year-old Medford youth. Officers said the quartet had in their possession four cases of pdp bottles taken from the Seven-Up Bottling company, a crate of bananas and two half-gallon bottles of milk. A fifth case of bottles had been sold, according to police. They are scheduled to be arraigned in district court. Castro Returns From Venezuela Havana -flJPD- Revolutionary Leader Fidel Castro returned today from his triumphal Venezuelan visit shortly be fore the start of Havana's second "war crimes" trial at Cuban army headquarters. Maj. Pedro Morejon Valdes, accused of being one of ex President Fulgencio Batista's three top hatchet men, went before an army court this afternoon at army headquar ters at Camp Liberty, former ly Camp Columbia. The third of the trio, Lt. Col. Ricardo Luis Grau, is to be tried as soon as this trial is over. One, Maj.
