So it was that in those first hours every man in Castro's 26th of July movement had to think and act for himself. I learned at about 8 a.m. of Ba tista's flight and took a quick tour of the city in my car. I found it quiet. If there was going to be any trouble, I reasoned, it will be at the airport, so I drove there, where I found three other rebels. We had all heard the rebel radio and knew that CMQ, the city's main radio and tele vision outlet, had been cap tured. The rebel radio had ordered a general strike. Only One Pistol Only one of us had a pistol, but we decided our job was to take over the airport, which was still functioning at nor mal pace. I decided to try to bluff our way through. I went up to the police com mander unarmed and told him who I was. "I've got a hundred men surrounding the place," I told him. "Do you want to fight, surrender, or join us?" "We'll join you," the com mander replied, much to my relief. He even offered to turn his gun over to me, but I told him to keep it. Minutes later, some men in a military intelli gence prowl car threw in with us, too. And we four men, armed with a single pistol, had taken the airport without firing a shot! Have Workers' Support From the airport I went to CMQ, rebel radio headquar ters. We had only a dozen armed men there, but nearly all the workers were on our side. At about 2 a.m. on Jan. 2, my wife Maritza was on the CMQ switchboard when a call came from El Cotorro, about 15 miles outside Havana. A man who said he was Maj. Che Guevara said he was en route to La Cabana Fortress in Havana Harbor to take it over. I wasn't sure I trust him, so I called La Cabana and an officer who identified himself as Lt. Col. Valera Castro said he was ready to surrender the fortress to 'the rebels. He asked me to accept the sur render. "I decided that if the for tress really intended to sur render, eight men could ac cept it as well as 200, so that's how many of us set out in two cars. There was no shooting. Col Castro walked up to me, sa luted, and said: "Col. Castro turning over command of La Cabana." Edgbaston, England-A shocked member of a British coun try club, after a dancer began doing a strip tease during the evening's entertainment: "Part of it turned out to be something like the dance of the seven veils only the girl did not halt at the sixth veil." 20 Per Cent of Accidents in City in 1958 Were on Medford's darkest hour-for traffic accidents anyway-ap-pears to be Friday afternoon from 4 to 5 p.m. According to the city police department's annual summary for 1958, 20.4 per cent of all traffic accidents occurred on Fridays and 10.9 per cent oc curred during that one hour of the day. Of the 1,727 drivers in volved in accidents last year at least 1,206 were males. The highest age group for all drivers was the 35-44 bracket. A total of 1,050 accidents involving one or more drivers occurred during the 12-month period ending last Dec. 31. This was a slight increase over the 1,006 in 1957. One Fatality One fatality occurred in Medford last year. A total of 173 persons were injured, 39 of them seriously. Four per sons were killed and 137 in jured in 1957. . Of the total, 20 traffic acci dents involving pedestrians were recorded, including 10 resulting in slight injuries and 7 in serious injuries. Twenty-four pedestrians were injured and three were killed in 24 pedestrian accidents in Code of Ethics Adopted by Group The code of ethics for mem bers of the Oregon Associa tion for Health, Physical Edu cation and Recreation was made public today by Betty J. Owen, association president and supervisor of physical education with the Oregon State Department of Educa tion. . Lee Ragsdale, supervisor of physical education for the Medford Public schools, is im mediate past president of the association. The code, formulated by a committee on professional standards, was adopted at a state convention held in Bend last month. It states that it shall be the duty of every member to secure the best preparation possible in their field; to attract competent persons; to develop and main tain good relations with stu dents, colleagues, institutions, and the general public at all times; and to apply for spe cific employment only when they have definite informa tion that a vacancy exists. Objectives of the associa tion are "to promote and cor relate research projects and to act as a central medium for clearing and disseminat ing information relating to health, physical education and recreation activities in Oregon." . Nixon and Sen. John F. Kennedy (D Mass.), got a lift today from Republicans and Democrats. Sens. Kenneth B. Keating (R-N.Y.), and Thomas H. Ku chel (R-Calif.), agreed that Nixon was far in the lead for the Republican presidential nomination over Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York. Strongest Candidate House Democratic Leader John W. McCormack (Mass.), said that Kennedy would make the strongest candidate his party could put up in 1960 and Adlai E. Stevenson would be the weakest. Keating said "all of the in dications are leaders of the Republican party, most of them, support Vice President Nixon today." The New Yorker, a running mate of Rockefeller in the No vember election, said only time will tell whether Nixon holds his lead. He also said it would be a dangerous thing for President Eisenhower to try to dictate selection of his Friday ing at intersections on a "walk" signal, five were cross ing elsewhere than at inter sections and three were com ing from behind parked cars. There were 101 hit and run accidents recorded, and 46 in which a driver had been drinking. One pedestrian was reported tinder the influence of alcohol.
