APPLEGATE VALLEY Access Road Washed Out Br MAUDE ZIEGLER Applegate Valley A quick rise in streams that brought high water in Steve Fork caused four wash-outs in the forest service timber access road there, according to local forestry oficials. The road was completed in the spring by A. L. Harding, road contractor of Staten, and . was engineered by the bureau of public roads'. : ' The Applegate river rose f more than 13 feet in the Cop i per area Monday morning, ac I cording to Henry Mapston, who has charge of a U.S. i weatner bureau gauge near his" home. Heavy rains that ' melted the snow in the high- er elevations brought the quick run-off in the streams. A forestry report stated that work continues in vari ous areas here on access roads where timber sales have been made. Work on the Sturgis Fork road is being done by the Double Dee Lumber com pany of Central Point. The Mountain Fir lumber company of Murphy has a road nearly completed on Kinney creek. and the Baldy road in the Beaver creek area is being constructed by the Getson Mill of Grants Pass. , A cabin home on Sterling occupied by Mrs. Ruth Per geson and two children was destroyed by fire last week, Mrs. Pergeson, who came here from California about a year. ago. is now living in Jacksonville. , Some were doing a bit of reminiscing over a visit to the community this summer by Mrs. Ella Rollings Vande graft of Sacramento, who taught Beaver Creek school in 1914, and later taught at Applegate. Among Upper Applegate landmarks about which Mrs Vandegraft inquired and which no longer exist were Palmer creek hall at the site of the Ed Foosen ranch. Bea ver creek school, and the A. D. McKee home, later the Ora Phillips house. The visitor no ticed that the old covered McKee bridge remains, al though not in use. Mrs. Van degraft . was visiting her brother, O. p. Rollings of Medford, and was a guest in this community of Mrs. Rol land Smith, formerly a first grade pupil. Mrs. Mike Loftus was hon ored with a surprise birthday party at her home Friday evening when a number of friends gathered. Among guests were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Reavis of Medford whose daughter, Kathie, also was honored on her 11th . birthday. The Little Applegate Knit ting club is cancelling their January meeting owing to other activities. ' Mr. and Mrs. Harley Hall and daughters are at their home here after residing for several months at Mt. Shasta, Calif., where Hall was en gaged in the timber. Miss Rose Buckley is con valescing at her home from a recent illness. Much searching in the at tics and thinking in terms of bustles and hoop skirts is go ing on here as residents get pioneer costumes ready for the Applegate Valley Centen nial potluck dinner at the Up per Applegate Grange hall Saturday, Jan. 17. The dinner will be at 7 p.m., and will consist of foods served in the early days. The dinner is to stimulate interest locally in the Centennial and Robert Sorber, chairman of the Centennial committee here, will speak briefly on Oregon birthday plans for the community. Table decorations will be carried out in the state colors of blue and gold, with cov ered wagons and gold pans an added note. Square dancing will follow the dinner. Mrs. Chester Jones has re turned to her home after minor surgery at Rogue Val ley hospital last week. Valley residents spending Sunday in the home of Mr, and Mrs. Charles Chittock near Grants Pass were Mr, and Mrs. Marcel LePiniec, Mr. and Mrs. Lance Offen bacher, Mr. and Mrs. Jack O'Brien, and Noel Dunlap. Miss Mary Clearwater of Tulsa, Okla., arrived last week to spend an indefinite period at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Henderson. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Pearson and daughter have returned after a week's trip to the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and Death Valley. They vis ited relatives in Arizona. Albert collings has re turned after . spending more than a month at Martinez, Calif where . he visited his sister, Mrs. Mary Moses. John A. Johnson of Sea side has remained here sine New Year's as a guest of his daughter, Mrs. Dave Winning-ham. Miss Mary Williams, who has completed nine weeks of basic training in the Waves at Bainbridge, Md., is spend ing a week's leave here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Williams. She will be stationed at Great Lakes, 111., on general duty for several months. Visiting Miss Wil liams here during the week end were her brother-in-law 3 and sister, Mrs. and Mrs. Ed Steiger and children of Ft Jones, Calif. ; A large group is expected to attend the meeting of the Valley Garden club at the home of Mrs. Ed Ramsay Wednesday, Jan. 21. The Rev. Thomas McCamant, author of the Birdwatchers' column, will discuss birds. Mrs. Rolland Smith visited Tuesday in Central Point at the home of her aunt, Mrs. John Higginbotham. Members of the extension unit last week viewed colored slides of Oregon scenes shown by Mrs. Bob Sorber, who had prepared a questionaire in which women identified the scenes. An ad ditional program also is being arranged, and this "will be an open meeting. Schools of the valley are invited to attend, as well as all other interested persons.. Mrs. Fred West has charge of the program.
