APPLEGATE VALLEY
Access Road Washed Out
Br MAUDE ZIEGLER
Applegate Valley A quick
rise in streams that brought
high water in Steve Fork
caused four wash-outs in the
forest service timber access
road there, according to local
forestry oficials.
The road was completed in
the spring by A. L. Harding,
road contractor of Staten, and
. was engineered by the bureau
of public roads'.
: ' The Applegate river rose
f more than 13 feet in the Cop
i per area Monday morning, ac
I cording to Henry Mapston,
who has charge of a U.S.
i
weatner bureau gauge near
his" home. Heavy rains that
' melted the snow in the high-
er elevations brought the
quick run-off in the streams.
A forestry report stated
that work continues in vari
ous areas here on access roads
where timber sales have been
made. Work on the Sturgis
Fork road is being done by
the Double Dee Lumber com
pany of Central Point. The
Mountain Fir lumber company
of Murphy has a road nearly
completed on Kinney creek.
and the Baldy road in the
Beaver creek area is being
constructed by the Getson
Mill of Grants Pass.
, A cabin home on Sterling

geson and two children was

Some were doing a bit of

the community this summer
by Mrs. Ella Rollings Vande
graft of Sacramento, who
taught Beaver Creek school
in 1914, and later taught at
Applegate.
Among Upper Applegate
landmarks about which Mrs
Vandegraft inquired and
which no longer exist were
Palmer creek hall at the site
of the Ed Foosen ranch. Bea
ver creek school, and the A.
D. McKee home, later the Ora
Phillips house. The visitor no
ticed that the old covered
McKee bridge remains, al
though not in use. Mrs. Van
degraft . was visiting her
brother, O. p. Rollings of
Medford, and was a guest in
this community of Mrs. Rol
land Smith, formerly a first
grade pupil.
Mrs. Mike Loftus was hon
ored with a surprise birthday
party at her home Friday
evening when a number of
friends gathered. Among
guests were Mr. and Mrs.
Wayne Reavis of Medford
whose daughter, Kathie, also
was honored on her 11th
. birthday.

and daughters are at their
home here after residing for
several months at Mt. Shasta,
Calif., where Hall was en
gaged in the timber.
Miss Rose Buckley is con

a recent illness.

pioneer costumes ready for

here, will speak briefly on
Oregon birthday plans for the
community.
Table decorations will be
carried out in the state colors
of blue and gold, with cov
ered wagons and gold pans an
added note. Square dancing
will follow the dinner.
