t . - 8 MAIL TRIBUNE, Madforrf, Ofgow, Friday, January 13 Penicillin Shots Said Not Necessary Los Angeles-UPD-At least 90 per cent of the penicillin shots given to, children for treatment of sore throats is a pure waste of money, accord ing to Dr. Robert A. Good. Good, a research pediatri cian at the University of Minnesota, told 300 members of the Los Angeles Pediatric Society Thursday that in nine out of 10 cases the penicillin shots simply are not needed. "Instead of just "feeding these kids penicillin,' he said, "the doctors should take sim ple tests of the throat at the very first visit and then after an analysis the parents can be assured what their child has." The revolt inside Fanfani's . own party centered on his left-of-center policies. It began in parliament last month when a score of Christian Democratic deputies used the secret ballot to defeat three important government- meas ures. Crux of both Fanfani's dis pute with the labor unions and his own . party members was his program for reform, including road reconstruction, ; a balanced budget and higher taxes. Drivers Licenses Suspended Listed Salem The department of motor vehicles has released names of 390 drivers whose licenses were ordered suv pended during the period be ginning Dec. 29 and ending Jan. 2. Length of suspension var ies, depending on charges. in volved, recommendation of court, discretionary action by the department or require ments of Oregon law. The de partment said some of the li censes involving financial re sponsibility and court recom mendations may have been re instated after suspension was ordered. The department warned drivers that the penalty for driving while suspended is a jail sentence of no less than two days and up to six months and there may be imposed a fine up to $500. S. are heated by oil,, and more than 22 million by gas. $150,000 Fire Damages City Block Anchorage, Alaska - (DPD - Damage was estimated as at least $150,000 today from a fire that destroyed half a city block in the downtown area Thursday. Ice - covered firemen suc ceeded in keeping the flames from breaking through to one of the city's largest depart ment stores in the other half of the block. Cause of the blaze was not determined but Fire Chief George Burns indicated it probably started in the fur nace room of the two-story building. Destroyed in the fire were the Lido Hotel, one of Anchor age's top nightclub restau rants, the Aleutian Gardens, a furrier shop, a, cafe, a loan company and another night club. . Occupants of the iotel were evacuated safely but one fire man from a Air Force crew was injured slightly as fire- BITTER PRISONER Edward Keehn of Pontiac, Mich., here shown with his widowed mother, is one of three Americans held for five months in the El Principe prison at Havana, Cuba. The three Americans, who were re leased after the fall of the Batista dictatorship, claim to have been tortured and mistreated, and Keehn has bitter ly assailed the American Embassy in Havana for having been "indifferent" to their plight. Fewer Businesses Listed for County There are 111 fewer busi ness concerns in Jackson county today than there were last year, according to J. Harry White, district mana ger of the Portland office of Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. He reported that 1,337 firms were listed in the Dun & Bradstreet Reference book for Jackson county in 1958, compared with 1,226 busi nesses listed now, a decrease of 8.3 per cent. White added that during the past year, 20,197 changes were made in the Reference book listings of Oregon busi ness, including 5,102 names added, 5,140 deleted, and 9, 955 changes in rating of con tinuing businesses. The book contains approxi mately 3,000,000 listings. In the new issue, , Medford con tains 709 listings; Ashland, 203; Central Point, 69; and Rogue River, 44. Almost 75 per cent of the dyes made in this country are used in textiles. Possible Leads Checked for Child New York-(DPD-A task force of mote than 200 police and FBI 'men continued to track down scores of tips and possi ble leads today in the inten sive search for tiny Lisa Rose Chionchio, kidnaped a week ago from a hospital nursery only 2, hours after her birth. But they appeared as far away from a solution as ever. Questioning of two women suspects Thursday raised hopes that a solution of the mystery was imminent. But both were eliminated as sus pects after long interrogation by police.. Efforts fo Raise Gasoline Said Lost Portland - (UPD - Efforts to raise the prices of gasoline from "wartime lows" have ap parently failed again. A spokesman for the Ore gon Gasoline Dealers associa tion said one major company is abandoning its efforts to raise the price a nickel. He said other major companies are expected to follow suit. The OGDA has been fight ing any price raise where the major companies. The OGDA represents independent dealers. Prices varied around Port land Thursday on regular gas oline with some stations sell ing for 23.9 cents a gallon and others selling at 28.9 cents per gallon. TO EXTEND DRAFT Washington -(UPD-A bill to extend the draft another four years will be the House Armed Services committee's first order of legislative busi ness this year. Grange News Shady Cove Grange The Shady Cove Grange had its first meeting of the year Saturday night, Jan. 3, at the Shady Cove school. . Past Master Phil Motsen backer, assisted by Cecil Kee, Anna Beryl Kee and Nellie Motsenbacker, installed the following officers: Edward Stother, overseer; Sara Stother, treasurer; Sadie Vanderlip, chaplain; Edgar Vanderlip, executive commit tee; Thelma Reining, ceres; Allyce Cross, Pomona. Master Ed Houston was 111 and was unable to attend so Edward Strother took over the master's duties and T. M. Littlefield filled the over seer's station.
