Soviets Give Full Coverage of Visit Moscow (UPD - Soviet press and radio are giving full and regular coverage to Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan's visit to the United States, indicating the importance the Kremlin has assigned to, his trip. Both Moscow Radio and So viet newspapers have been carrying daily reports from New York,- Washington and Cleveland on Mikoyan's acti vities, including his official talks with U.S. government officials and his informal meetings with business and labor union leaders. Soviet newspapers played up the favorable reception he has received in the United States and emphasized the useful purpose of his visit in improving Soviet - American relations. Worship service Record High Total Noted In Deposits By First National A record high deposit total was recorded by First Nation al Bank of Oregon when the statewide bank reported its Dec. 31, 1958 statement of condition figures to the comp troller of the currency. Year-end deposits of $849, 167,094 were reported, eclips ing the old mark of $821,125, 576 set on Dec. 31, 1955 at the previous peak of Oregon's post-war boom, it was report ed today! The Medford branch of First National reported year-end deposits of $27,970,985 and loans totalling $12,783,004, according to J. A. Moore, branch manager. He said that deposits on Dec. 31. 1957. totaled $26.- 461,038 and loans, $fl,450,- 502 The Central Point branch reported Dec 31, 1958, depos its of $2,827,505 and loans, $1,781,066. Branch Manager F. C. Ayres reported that com parable totals for a year ago were $2,499,981 for deposits and $1,308,266 for loans. First National President C. B. Stephenson said the in crease in deposits was due to increased lumber prices dur ing the first half of 1958 and its stimulation to local busi ness and to the fact that con sumers apparently are passing up many hard goods items such as appliances and auto mobiles in order to save money- , Grotewohl Guest of Premier Kassem Baghdad, Iraq -(UPD- Com munist East Germany Premier Otto Grotewhol was guest of honor Thursday night at a re ception given by . Iraqi Pre mier Abdul el Kassem. Earlier Grotewhol conferred with Kassem and the three man sovereignty council. They discussed economic relations and technical cooperation be tween Iraq and East Germany. Klamath Falls Girl Wins Oregon Contest Salem -TOPD- Karen Mode, a senior at Klamath Falls High school, Thursday was an nounced winner of the Voice of Democracy contest in Ore gon. The contest was sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Association of Broadcasters. She will compete for a $1, 500 college scholarship now in the national judging. Baseball Star Sounds Fire Alarm New York (UPD Former Brooklyn Dodger baseball star Jackie Robinson was credited with saving a San Antonio, Tex., couple Thursday night when he saw smoke coming from their hotel room and sounded an alarm. Robinson, staying in an ad jacent room on the 12th floor of the Belmont-Plaza hotel, went into "the hallway to in vestigate after smelling smoke shortly before midnight. See ing smoke coming from un der the next door, he notified the management. Firemen broke down the door and found Kenneth Brown, 50, and his wife, Juanita, 40, of San Antonio, overcome in their twin beds and their room ablaze. Both were treated at a hos pital for minor burns and smoke poisoning. They were able to return to the hotel several hours later. ENTERS MILLROSE RACE New York (UPD Alex Henderson, an Australian at tending Arizona State univer sity, has entered the two-mile race in the Jan. 31 Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. Henderson won the NCAA two-mile crown and the National AAU three-mile title last year. The accident took place on Golden Gate Bridge at 6:30 p.m. when a car driven by Henry E. Picard, 62, the brew ery executive, crashed into one driven by Emrys Wil liams, 52, manager of the American Trust Company branch in Sonoma. With Williams was Mrs. Pearl Andrews, 39, Sonoma, who suffered face cuts, a pos sible back injury and shock. Highway Patrolman T. Allyn Bragg said Picard's northbound car crossed the center line near the north tower and struck the Williams auto. The front ends of both cars were demolished. The impact threw Williams out of his car. He was dead on arrival at Park Emergency hospital in San Francisco. Picard was treated at the hospital for a badly cut nose. He refused to take an alcohol blood test. Mrs. Andrews was treated at the Emergency hospital and later was transferred to St. Luke's hospital. She is the widow of a Sonoma attorney. Morgan Suspends Rate Hike Proposal Salem -(UPD- A rate increase by Depoe Bay Telephone com pany was suspended today by Public Utlity Commissioner Howard Morgan for a period of not more than six months. During the time, the PUC will hold hearings and inves tigate the proposed increases. There are 500 active volca noes in the world. It was the first time since December of 1956 that a gain was shown over the corre sponding month of a previous year, the commission said. The Oregon economy "is facing a brighter future, al though conditions are certain- Police Posted in Area of Slaying St. Louis, Mo.-(UPD-Fulltime details of plainclothes police were posted in a residential neighborhood today while other investigators probed a nearby park for clues in the multilation slaying of a young mother. The plainclothes army hoped to serve the double pur pose of reassuring terrorized women neighbors of the, vic tim, Mrs. Charles E. Monta gue, 32, the mother of two, and to trap Mrs. Montague's slayer. f Mrs. Montague's body was found Wednesday, slashed and molested, by her brother, Donald Jones, who had joined the search party organized when she failed to return from a sorority party Tuesday night. Both Jones and Mrs. Monta gue's husband have taken lie tests, and authorities said the results were negative.
