Local and Personal Thft-Elwood Anderson, 16 Quince St., Medford, reported to city police Tuesday after noon the theft of a 6V4 inch -skilsaw from Copeland Lum ber company during the night. It was valued at $30. Lost-Darlene Rae Fields, 1850 Myers lane, reported to city police Tuesday afternoon the loss of a pink school note book and three textbooks in front of the Greyhound bus depot. The textbooks were en titled "American Story," -Building Better English," and a mathematics text. Sills Ignite-Firemen sum moned on a house fire alarm to the home of Franklin Bev- erly, 634 Crater Lake ave., about 9:20 pjn. yesterday found that a flue fire head heated the brick to the point that floor sills against the bot tom of the chimney had ignit ed. Woolsey, 105 Ash St., Phoenix, died at his home this morning. Funeral arrangements will be announ ced by Conger-Morris Funer al directors, Medford. JOHN HOUCK JR. John Houck Jr.,son of the Rev. and Mrs. John F. Houck, of Dale City, Calif., died Jan. 4 from injuries received in an automobile accident near San Francisco Jan. 3, accord ing to local relatives. The Rev. Mr. Houck was former pastor of the Ashland Assembly of God church and Mrs. Houck is the former Lucy Weeks of Trail. Other survivors include several aunts and uncles in the val ley. Mr. Houck was stationed in Germany with the U. S. Army paratroopers until his dis charge recently. High Smith, attorney for Pacific Power and Light com pany, spoke to the League of Women Voters here in oppo sition to a U.S. Senate bill on which committee hearings were held last month. Smith said the bill "is bas ed on a philosophy that looks back to the time and situa tion of the middle 1930's in stead of toward the realities of the 1960's, which are upon us." ; The league last month also heard ben. Loren Leach, 1228 Cor ona 1 ave., Medford, has re turned to Fort Gordon, Ga., after spending. a 15-day leave with his parents in Medford recently. Private Leach enlisted m the Army in September and received his basic training at Fort Ord, Calif. He is study ing radio relay and carrier at the Fort Gordon signal corps school. The new plastic covering is expected to arrive by the end of the month and is re ported to be much stronger than the one which was in stalled last month. Dobson said that the new covering will have a nylon thread run ning through the plastic every one-quarter inch. The old bubble collapsed during a1 windstorm. No one was in the pool at the time sjnee Dobson had closed the area earlier in the evening. The covering is being replaced by the manufacturer. State to Appeal Case Against Copco Salem-flJPD-The State; For estry Board will appeal to the Oregon Supreme Court a case against the California- Oregon Power company for fire damage of approximately $40,000 on Sykes creek in Jackson county. Previously Circuit Court Judge Orval J, Millard held against the state, ruling that the power company's ease ment through forest lands did not constitute ownership or control of the land. Army has an nounced a new technical train ing program for men and women under which the en listee may choose the exact career in which he or she would like to receive train ing. Called the "choose-it-your-self" training system, the plan offers a man or woman the opportunity to choose service from more than 50 career groups. In order to qualify for this training the applicant must show an aptitude for the type of training he wishes through a series of aptitude tests ad ministered prior to enlistment. Weather College Enrollment Expected Over 1.000 Ashland - Registration at Southern Oregon college for the winter quarter is expected again to exceed 1,000 students, college officials re? orted to day. - . At the close of 1 the third day of registration t the col lege, 976 students 1 ad regis tered or approximately 10 per cent above the same period for the 1958 winter term. Registration will continue through Friday at Churchill hall. Record enrollment at the college was for the term start ing last September when 1,150 students registered. Nixon will be here Feb. 14 to help celebrate Oregon's 100th anniversary as a state. Nixon confirmed the date for Oregon's big birthday party here in a telephone call to Gov.-elect Mark Hatfield Wednesday. The vice president was one of a number of public officials who have been invited to the celebration. During the meeting, the members dis cussed the new "Secretary's Book" and accepted the goals for the coming year. Officers of the club are Billy Ullom, president; Cece Fichtner, vice president; Sally Bailey, secretary; Carol Foote, flag salute leader; and Sue Higinbotham, reporter. Two new members have joined. They are Tim Higinbotham and Jimmy Anhorn. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Foote; a birthday cake was served honoring the leader, Mrs. Anhorn. The next meeting will be on Feb. 2 at the Higinbotham home. Sue Higinbotham Reporter Former Resident Injured in Accident Mrs. Hichard Whitlock, 21, former Medford resident, suf fered head injuries, a frac tured leg, dislocated shoulder and lacerations Tuesday night when she was struck by an automobile in Portland, ac cording to friends here. She is in St. Vincent hos pital, Portland, where her con dition was reported as fair. Driver of the car was Donald P. Shiley, 39, of Portland, ac cording to Portland reports.
