moned on a house fire alarm

John Houck Jr.,son of the
Rev. and Mrs. John F. Houck,

4 from injuries received in
an automobile accident near
San Francisco Jan. 3, accord

The Rev. Mr. Houck was
former pastor of the Ashland
Assembly of God church and
Mrs. Houck is the former
Lucy Weeks of Trail. Other
survivors include several
aunts and uncles in the val
ley. Mr. Houck was stationed in
Germany with the U. S. Army
paratroopers until his dis
charge recently.

Wednesday called proposals
for a federal power corpora
tion for the Columbia river
basin as a "reactionary in
concept," and favored a super-agency
that is not needed
in the Pacific Northwest.
High Smith, attorney for
Pacific Power and Light com
pany, spoke to the League of
Women Voters here in oppo
sition to a U.S. Senate bill
on which committee hearings
were held last month.
Smith said the bill "is bas
ed on a philosophy that looks
back to the time and situa
tion of the middle 1930's in
stead of toward the realities
of the 1960's, which are upon
us." ;
The league last month also

Ashland New end walls
for a plastic bubble, which
will replace the one which
collapsed at Twin Plunges
swimming pool here over the
week end, are being installed,
according to Leslie Dobson,
manager of the pool.
The new plastic covering
is expected to arrive by the
end of the month and is re
ported to be much stronger
than the one which was in
stalled last month. Dobson
said that the new covering
will have a nylon thread run
ning through the plastic
every one-quarter inch.
The old bubble collapsed
during a1 windstorm. No one
was in the pool at the time
sjnee Dobson had closed the
area earlier in the evening.
The covering is being replaced
by the manufacturer.
State to Appeal
Case Against Copco

the Oregon Supreme Court a
case against the California-
Oregon Power company for
fire damage of approximately
$40,000 on Sykes creek in
Jackson county.
Previously Circuit Court
Judge Orval J, Millard held
against the state, ruling that
the power company's ease
ment through forest lands did
not constitute ownership or
control of the land.
The state alleges the power
company had righted a fallen
tree to clear some land and
that the tree later blew over
a power line starting the fire

Training Program
The U- S. Army has an
nounced a new technical train
ing program for men and
women under which the en
listee may choose the exact
career in which he or she
would like to receive train
ing. Called the "choose-it-your-self"
training system, the plan
offers a man or woman the
opportunity to choose service
from more than 50 career
groups.
In order to qualify for this
training the applicant must
show an aptitude for the type
of training he wishes through
a series of aptitude tests ad
ministered prior to enlistment.

Cudchewers
The regular meeting of the
Cudchewers 4-H club was
held at the home of Carol
and Dave Foote, on Scenic
ave., Central Point. During
the meeting, the members dis
cussed the new "Secretary's
Book" and accepted the goals
for the coming year.
Officers of the club are
Billy Ullom, president; Cece
Fichtner, vice president; Sally
Bailey, secretary; Carol Foote,
flag salute leader; and Sue
Higinbotham, reporter. Two
new members have joined.
They are Tim Higinbotham
and Jimmy Anhorn.
Refreshments were served
by Mrs. Foote; a birthday
cake was served honoring the
leader, Mrs. Anhorn.
The next meeting will be
on Feb. 2 at the Higinbotham
home.

Injured in Accident
Mrs. Hichard Whitlock, 21,
former Medford resident, suf
fered head injuries, a frac
tured leg, dislocated shoulder
and lacerations Tuesday night
when she was struck by an
automobile in Portland, ac
cording to friends here.
She is in St. Vincent hos
pital, Portland, where her con
dition was reported as fair.
Driver of the car was Donald
P. Shiley, 39, of Portland, ac
cording to Portland reports.
Mrs. Whitlock was a dental
assistant in Medford the past
two years. The Whitlocks
moved to Portland a short
time ago.
