SAMUEL HEPBURN Visit Local Salvation Army Western Territorial Commander Visits Local Salvation Army For the first time in many years the Territorial Com mander of the Salvation Army will visit the local corps. Lt. Commissioner and Mrs. Sam uel Hepburn, San Francisco, will be visitors for the 11 ajn. worship service Sunday at the Salvation Army of Medford. Commissioner Hepburn is the territorial commander of the Salvation Army's West ern territory which comprises New Officers for Medford Adventisl Sabbath School Medford Seventh -day Ad ventist church Sabbath school members will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday under the lead ership of newly elected of ficers for the year of 1959. General superintendent of the Sabbath school will be Mrs. Malcolm McCarty assist ed by William Riemer and Dr Virgil Mohr. Secretarial positions for the year will be held by Mrs. Robert Jolliff e, Mrs. Harvard Bresse and Miss Diane Mohr. Mrs. Inez Smith has been elected organist and Harold Yost will be chorister in the senior division. Working with the senior of ficers will be the leaders of the various youth divisions Including Mrs. Paul Beddoe, cradle-roll leader, Mrs. A. E. Merkel in the kindergarten, Mrs. Robert Meilicke and Ro bert Molander, primary, and Ersel Halsted, juniors. Believing that regular Bible study is necessary to Chris tian life and growth, the church stresses daily Bible study in all divisions of the Sabbath school and each week both old and young members are divided into some 40 class es to study selected subjects. Lessons from the life of the apostle Paul taken from his epistle to the Romans will be studied In the junior and sen ior divisions for the first quarter of 1959, and the chil dren's lessons will be a con tinuation of those of last quar ter on the life of Jesus. Guest Speaker A! 1st Church of God The Rev. E. H. Ahrendt, Portland, will be guest speak er at the First Churchof God, Haven and Holly sts., tonight a 7:30 o'clock. Mr. Ahrendt's message of the evening will be concerned with the matter of divine healing, and there will be opportunity for those wishing to be healed to be prayed for during this service. Mr. Ahrendt has had many years of experience in pastor ing and also in evangelistic work. While a minister he has experienced miraculous an swers to prayer on behalf of those who have been in much need of help in both soul and body. He claims no power of his own to bring healing, but recognizes the power of God and His promises. Talent Church Plans Series on Missions Talent-A series on missions to be called "Our Search for Concerns" will begin at the Talent First Methodist church Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Clif ford R. Miller, former mis sionary to Africa, will speak and show slides. The second in the series will include films on Alaska and China with the commis sion on mission committee in charge. As Territorial Commander Commissioner Hepburn com mands more than 800 officers and 1,700 civilian employees at 170 Corps centers. Includ ed in these services are hos pitals, rehabilitation centers for men, community centers for young people and chil dren, emergency disaster op erations, participation in USO services to military person nel, police court work, aid to prisoners' families and ma ternity homes. . Commissioner Hepburn re-, cently participated in the International Conference of Commissioners in England. Mrs. Hepburn, because of her work during the war years in the Philadelphia area, re ceived the Award of Merit in the Friendship Fete from 24 women's clubs in Phila delphia. She is now the presi dent of all Home League op erations in the West. The public is invited to attend the local services Sun day. Jacksonvilla-The Rev. King K. Jones Jr., First Presby terian church, Jacksonville, will speak Sunday at 11 a.m. on "The Master Masters Temptation." The sermon will be the third in a series of studies on the Gospels. Eagle Point Church Elects 1959 Officers Eagle Point Church of ficers for the Eagle Point Seventh-day Adventist for 1959 were elected recently. Herschel M. Harper will be first elder with Dr. Howard Ferguson, elder and Harry Bradford, head deacon. Other deacons included Arthur Erown, Roy Clark, Waldo, Hull, Clifford Turvey, and George Gander. Head deaconess is Mrs. Tom Campbell and deaconesses in clude Mrs. Howard Ferguson, Mrs. Henry Rogers, Mrs. Har per, and Mrs. Myrtle Bennett. Mrs. Elmer Estelle is church clerk with Delmer Logan, church treasurer. Dr. Harold Reith is new Sabbath school superintendent and will be assisted by Robert Burns and Arthur Brown. UNITY TOPIC - "The Open Door" will be topic of the Unity sermon Sunday at Unity Center of Medford at 11 ajn. The meet ing will be held at the Pythi an hall, corner of Fifth and Grape sts. 1957 Award of Merit Winner A Cappella Choir to Sing At Local Church Sunday The a cappella choir from George Fox college, Newberg will present a sacred concert at the Friends church Sun day. The entire concert will be sung 'twice, first at 9:45 a.m. and again at 11 a.m., and will include choral selec tions from early composers as well as contemporary mus ic, negro spirituals, and a Christmas section. Director of the 36-voice choir is Mrs. Har riett Storaker. Dr. Milo Ross, president of the college, and Mrs. Ross will accompany the singers. The current tour has taken the choir through the states of Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colo rado, Arizona and California. A dinner will be served to the singers at noon by women of the church. A new Sunday school class, "What Friends Believe," will MISS JEAN CUNNINGHAM Minister-Student t Missionary Now Gold Hill Pastor Gold Hill "The Compell ing Motive" will be the ser mon title at the 11 a.rru wor ship service Sunday by Miss Jean Cunningham, former missionary to Mexico, now minister of the Gold Hill Christian church. A recent newcomer to Jackson county, Miss Cun ningham spent several years doing missionary work on the border and in Mexico. She is now attending Southern Ore gon college, Ashland, where she is majoring in secondary education Besides her duties as minister of the Gold Hill church she also teaches piano in Ashland where she makes her home. A daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. J. Frank Cunningham, Winema, Ore, she attended Northwest Christian college, Eugene, where she was grad uated in 1949. During the winter of 1951 she toured Mexican missions. She has assisted othei mis sionaries with their work in the . Chihuahua, and Parral, Mexico, areas. Her present plans are to return to mission work in Mexico in 1960. Miss Cunningham, and a friend, Mrs Gloria Jewel, who ac companied her to Mexico, write bulletins to further the emphasis on personal evan gelism. The two women have completed a course of study on the subject a:id mail it to approximately 50 persons and churches Adventist Youth To Attend Meeting Young people from ten southern Oregon Seventh-day Adventist churches, including those of the Medford area area will meet Saturday, Jan 10 at a youth rally to be held in the Grants Pass Seventh day Adventist church. Pur pose of the rally is to empha size the positive and attrac tive aspects of Christianity to American youth according to Elder R. C. Schwartz, state director of youth activities for the church. Elder Schwartz will be fea tured speaker at the one-day meet. The first service will be held at 3:30 p.m. and the second at 7:30 p.m. Sfudents of Milo academy will present the music for the rally. Over 500 young people are expect ed to be in attendance. District President L Valley Speaker Cencral Point The Rev, L. "V. Lawson, district presi dent of Pentecostal Churches of God in Oregon and south ern Idaho, will be guest speaker Sunday night at the Central Point, Pentecostal Church of God. The young people's associa tion services will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday and will in clude singing. w mm- CHURCH NEWS National Religious Publicity Council begin Sunday, to continue for three months. It will be taught by Dr. Alvin Roberts at the 11 a.m. hour and is open to any who wish to enroll. Pastor Clynton Crisman and Mrs. Crisman left Tuesday with several young people to attend Mid-Winter Christian Endeavor Convention at Tilla mook Air Base. Others in the group included Mrs. Cecil Johnson, Lawrence Roberts, Jereal Brown, Judy Nelson, Karen Wolk-Laniewski, Marj orie Brood, Joyce Klutsenbek er, Inez Viers, Suzanne and Carolyn Harmon. They will return today. local Pastor to Attend Meeting In New York City Dr. D. Kirkland West, pas tor of First Presbyterian church, will leave next week for New York City where he will attend a meeting of the committee for Stewardship and Promotion of the United Presbyterian church. During the three day meet ing to be held Jan. 7 through 9, the committee will formu late plans for the outreach program of the church at large during 1959. The ses sions will be held at the New Yorker hotel where Dr. West will stay while in the East. Chairman of the committee is Dr. John Thompson Peters of New York City. Other com mittee members in addition to Dr. West, are Dr. Paul Cal houn, Albuquerque, N. M.; Dr. J. Stewart Dickson, south west Florida; Dr. Charles Ehr hardt, Newark, N. J.; Dr. J. D. illingworth, Wheeling, W. Va.; Dr. William Findley, Tulsa, Okla.; Dr. Robert Young, Akron, Ohio; and Dr. Cary Weisiger, New York City. Dr. West represents the west coast on the committee. . Prior to leaving for New York, Dr. West, the Rev. Har old Roberts, and the Rev. John Heynolds " of the' local church will attend a meeting in Portland Monday, Jan. 5. The meeting of the Oregon Synod is being held to effect union on that level between the former Presbyterian Church in the U.S-A, This will complete the merger which took place last May be tween the two denominations and will form the Synod of Oregon of the United Presby terian Church in the U.S.A. Congregational Plans Communion The first Sunday of the new year will be celebrated at the Congregational church with the communion of the Lord's supper. This will be observed at the 10 a.m. hour of wor ship; The church school meets at the same hour, and nursery care is provided for younger children. The communion ser mon of the Rev. Thomas Mc Camant will be on "The Transformation of Common Things." The Pilgrim Fellow ship will meet Sunday at 7 pm. Monday at 7:15 . p.m. the annual meeting of the congre gation will be held, begin ning with a dessert. This is normally the most important business meeting of the year for the church. Reports will be heard from the various officers -and organizations. The congregation will be in formed about its current situa tion as to membership, finan cial condition and the work of various departments. New officers will be elect ed. A slate of new leaders will be presented by the nominat ing committee including Em mett Bullard, Mrs. Mark Smith and Mrs. Richard Tra vis.. How the power of God set forth in the Bible brings peace and harmony will be the topic of a free lecture on Christian Science to be held at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, 100 .Windsor ave., Tuesday, Jan. 6. . Nazarenes to Hold Candlelight Event Sunday at Church A candlelight communion service will be observed at the 7 p.m. service at the First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly st. Sunday. The pastor, the Rev. Raymond W. Hurn, will present the com munion meditation, "A Look Into the Unknown." Members of the teen-age choir will as sist with the service. , International radio broad cast of the Church' of the Nazarene, "Showers of Bless ing" will be heard at the new time, 10 a.m. beginning Sun day on station KDOV. The course has been registered at the general church schools office in Kan sas City and credit will be given those completing re quirements for the course. First Methodists Plan Offering First Methodist Church be gins the New Year with ob servance of holy communion in the 9:30 and 11 a.m. serv ices. The communion offering will be for Methodist work in Alaska to help with the newly established Methodist churches. Dr. George G. Rose berry's communion medita tion will be "Seeking God in the New Year." The anthem for Sunday will be "God so Loved the World" and the vocal duet for both services is "O Divine Re deemer" sung by Dr. and Mrs. Milton Snow. The all church" annual School of Missions will begin Sunday, Jan. 11. The study this year will be "Christian Concerns of our North Ameri can Neighbors" with special emphasis on! Alaska and Ha waii. MIA New Department In Church School A new Sunday school de partment will be inaugurated at First Baptist church Sun day at 9:45 a.m. The high school young people, who have been a part of the adult department, will have an or ganization of their own with Don Chapman, superintend ent. They will meet in the Girls Community club, which is located close to the church. Mrs. Fred Landers is teacher of the girls' class and Vincent Smith teaches the boys of high school age. New classes for adults will begin Sunday with new elec tive courses in "Operation Search" being offered. Piper will continue the series of sermons on "Frontiers of Faith" at the First Christian church Sunday morning. The title of his sermon for both worship services will be "Frontiers Ahead of Us."
