Korea Orphans Due Americans Celebrate Christmas At Bases Throughout the World 10 Keacn Kornana Portland -UPD- Some 100 Korean orphans will be flown I from Seoul, Korea, to Port land, Ore., Saturday. The flight, sponsored by the Holt Adoption Program of Creswell, Ore., will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, with planes stopping off at Wake Island and Honolulu en route to Portland. The arrival time is 11 a.m. Saturday morning. Prospective parents who have offered to adopt these children will greet them on arrival at Portland, accord ing to Flying Tiger spokes men, who said the children range in age from one to six years. The youngsters will be ac companied by six nurses, with medical care provided at each stop. The northernmost were at Thule in Greenland and along the DEW line which stretches across northern Canada near the Arctic Circle. The Army, Navy and Air Force supplied Christmas din ners for the thousands of American servicemen abroad. And in Berlin there was an all out drive by West Berlin- ers to entertain American servicemen in German homes. It was "Orphan Day" throughout the world and thousands of homesick Amer icans especially in Korea but in other countries around the globe - gave Christmas parties at U. S. bases decorat ed with Christmas trees like the ones at home. . Children Gtt Gifts. There are only" 10 U. S. Marines in Lisbon where they are attached to the embassy but they kept the American service tradition too and in vited in 34 children to the apartment they share near the embassy building. Each child received a woolen sweater and a box of cookies "just like mom makes them." Many Americans spent the day helping flood - stricken Moroccans. In the United States it was a traditional Christmas throughout the land, the kind the Americans overseas re membered. It was a homey Christmas at the White House where President Eisenhower gathered with his family in a reunion enacted in many other places throughout the land.' Follett and 20 -year -old Lloyd Zacharias were duck hunting northeast of Pilot Rock with a .22 caliber re volvers and when the hunting proved indifferent they decid ed to pull a few "fast draws." Lord Mayor Willy Brandt, in a radio speech, told West Berliners the threat from the East was not diminished but he assured them they would trust 'Western allied strength and their own determination to keep the city free. ; Brandt said he regretted the necessity of disturbing a joyous feast by mentioning Jthe dangers facing the city, but he said he did so only so that all Berliners will stand firmly together so that future Christmasses will be spent in freedom too. Two Take $16,000 From Azusa Bank Azusa, Calif. -(UPD- Sheriffs officers today sought two trench-c o a t-wearing bandits armed with a sawed-off shot gun, one of whom was named "Beanie," who robbed a Se curity First National Bank branch here of $16,000, kid naping the manager in his own car. San Dimas sheriff's officers said the bandits were trailed by a passer-by as they drove off Wednesday. Bank Mana ger Paul V. Phillips told offi cers one of his kidnapers smashed a window in the car to take a shot at their pur suer, Larry Asmus, 25. Officers said the bandits entered the bank early Wednesday morning, tied four employees and one ban dit, who called his : partner "Beanie," warned him not to harm any women employees. After telling one customer the bank was closed, the pair waited for the time lock to open the vault, then went in to gather the money in vari ous denominations and next cleaned out the tellers' cages. They then took Phillips with them as hostage, later abandoning him taped and blindfolded in his car. They made their escape in a salmon-colored late model sedan.
