Cut to 99' Quemoy Churches Ignore Bombs Quemoy - (DPD - A Catholic and a Protestant church on the Quemoy island held their annual Christmas services to day amid Communist artillery bombardment. To the Communists today means only an odd numbered day of the month and another shelling under their alternate day war plan. The Red guns opened up before the midnight mass was over in the island's only two churches and continued spor adically throughout the morn ing. About 700 Christians-more than half of them soldiers went to the churches. The other non - Christian Chinese on the island, Christ mas this year has a special meaning because of a Christ mas Day cease fire ordered by the Nationalist govern ment. The Quemoy garrison was ordered not to fire back to day unless the Communists attempt to invade. , The soldiers continued to work on their fortifications between Red barrages.-1 Amnesia Victim Thought Innocent Tucson, Ariz. - (UPD - Pima county sheriffs deputies to day are holding a 44-year-old Round Lake, 111., amnesia vic tim on a vagrancy charge but believe he did not murder a Jamul, Calif., man whose body was found on the desert some seven miles east of here last Saturday. Authorities said . they were continuing to question Joseph Dinet Sr., 44, about the death of Charles Dutton, 54, whose battered body was discovered on the desert. Dutton, officers said, had been dead for two or four days. Dinet told sheriff 's deputies he was suffering from amne sia and couldn't remember what happened. He was arrest ed on "a vagrancy charge Mon day in Buckeye, a community west of Phoenix, Ariz. He told police there that he did some thing terrible but couldn't re member what. Police held him for Pima county authorities. Subse quent questioning and the in ability of witnesses, particu larly a filling station attend ant who said he saw .. a tall dark hitchhiker about the time of the murder, to identi fy Dinet, led officers to think Dinet may not be connected with Dutton's murder. Dutton had been beaten on the head. A bloody monkey wrench was lying near the body. Russia Appoints Securijy Chief Moscow (UPD The Su preme Soviet today named a young Communist Party of ficial to replace Gen. Ivan Se rov as head of the Soviet se curity system. The new chairman Vf the Committee on State Security is Alexander Mikhailovitch Shelepin, a former secretary of the Komsonol Communist Youth Organization and a member of the Central Com mittee and the Supreme So viet (Parliament). It was believed that Serov, whose resignation was an nounced Dec. 8 now holds a high army post : Shelepin's appointment follows a recent practice of designating party officials to- all key posts of Soviet power. Serov was a professional security man whereas Shele pin is a professional party of ficial. ...... - . - PTA TREND Chicago -(UPD-The National Congress of Parents , and Teachers reports a new trend in which parents whose chil dren are not yet in school are joining the PTA. Open House Is Planned for Firm Open house is planned at the New Security Insurance and Realty building, 48 Haw thorne ave., Medford, early next year, a spokesman for the firm has announced. Security Insurance and Realty is a merger of Robin son, rotter and Ripley, one of the largest insurance ag encies in southern Oregon, the Chris Barker agency, and Barker-Hart agency. Finishing touches will be made on the building before an open house is held, spokes men said. The new structure will pro vide ground floor offices and paved off-street parking. It is near the Jackson County Red Cross chapter on Haw thorne ave. The building was designed by Seibert and Sites, architects. Orbiting Atlas Scheduled for Rest Washington -(UPD- The At las "talking" satellite will get a partial rest for the Christ mas week end. The Defense Department said communications tests with the orbiting 4Vi ton missile will be conducted only on a "reduced schedule" until next Monday. Officials declined to indi cate whether a New Year's greeting from President Eis enhowed might replace his yuletide message for tests af ter the Christmas holiday. But the Defense Depart ment said a full schedule of voice and teletypewriter mes sages again would be sent to the Atlas after the Christmas week end. Cuban Rebels Claim Successes Havana, Cuba - (UPD - The rebel radio claimed new suc cesses today and announced a new attempt would be made to call a general strike to de liver the "coup de grace" to the government of President Fulgencio Batista. Three previous rebel at tempts to , stage a general strike have failed although the rebels threatened to use forceagainst any workers dis obeying their call. The latest strike" call will be issued at any time, the rebel- radio said. , . The rebel radio claimed in surgent forces killed 33 gov ernment soldiers and cap tured half a dozen towns in Camaguey and Las Villas provinces of Central Cuba. The rebels said in the cap ture of the town of Cabaiguan the forces of Fidel Castro's "July 26th Revolutionary Movement" joined forces for the first time with the revo lutionary directorate com manded by Argentine-born physician Ernest "Che" Gue vra. - Soldier Freed In Seoul Slaying Seoul U.S. Military Po lice have released for lack of evidence .one of two Amer ican GIs allegedly involved in the knife slaying of a 61- year-old Korean barber, it was learned today. An -Army spokesman said Charles P. Seal, Chicago, 111., is r now "on duty status at his unit here. He said Real has been freed because "Military Police in vestigations thus far showed no basis for formal charges" against the 24-year-old sol dier. The other soldier, John S. Raymos, Leavenworth, Kan., has been charged with unpre meditated murder and assault and is now being detained at Eighth Army Stockade, the spokesman said. Raymos is accused of fa tally stabbing Chin Taek and injuring another Korean dur ing a brawl with a group of Koreans at a downtown night club in Seoul on Dec. 14. The Library of Congress has passed the 10 million mark in books. . It was learned that the test launching was conducted at Cape Canaveral, Fla., last Friday. Official sources said the test was a major weapons breakthrough. The test caused revision of the schedule for the develop ment of the air-launched mis siles. It had been expected previously that the develop ment w6uld take several years beyond the new 1961 date. In the Friday test, a Con vair B-58 successfully launch ed a Lockheed test missile while flying more than 1,000 miles an hour. The solid-pro-pellant missile in the test was known as the "1 99." (UPD Funeral services were pend ing today for an Air Force test pilot and Distinguished Service Cross winner who was killed when his twin-jet B-57 bomber crashed here. Capt. Robert E. Williams, 33, Alhambra, Calif., was alone in the plane . which normally carries two men. He was practicing climbing and take-offs when the crash oc curred Wednesday, an Air Force spokesman said. Williams, a veteran of both World War II and the Korean conflict as a bombardier and navigator, held both the Dis tinguished Service Cross and the Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters. He had been as signed here as an experiment al flight test - officer since early 1957.
