Well, we did it. We tossed into outer space a satellite that makes the Rus sian Sputniks look like peas alongside a pumpkin. It weighs a little better than lour tons-8800 pounds, to be exact. It has all the modern im provements, including a two way wrist radio. We can talk to it and it can talk back. It has a robot that guides it-and because of this robot, we are led to believe, it hit the bulls eye on the first try. That sug gests the thought that if we can throw four tons of satel lite into outer space and GUIDE it into orbit we can guide an atomic block-buster to Moscow. All in all, we've proved to the Russians that anything they can do we can do better, as Annie Oakley sings to crack-shot Frank Butler in "Annie Get Your Gun." BUT Having done it Let's not get too cocky. Everybody yearns to throw a ripe tomato at a braggart. We don't want ripe tomatoes thrown at us. We want to be admired. We want to be re spected. We want to be FEARED in the right places . So let' saw wood and say as little as possible. OUR scientists have proved themselves. They've come through with the goods in what was getting to be a pinch. That's WONDERFUL It restores our self confidence. It yanks us out of what might have been the beginning of an inferiority complex. - But let's not underestimate Russia. And let's not OVER estimate ourselves. We have gome weak spots. Among oth er things, we're tending to think, in terms of how much we can have in the way of fun and hell-raising and how LITTLE we can WORK. We're becoming Increasingly Impatient of DISCIPLINE. The Russians aren't scorn ful of work. They are a rigid ly , disciplined people. We don't admire them for that. But all history shouts to us the lesson of the EFFECTIVE NESS of discipline. It was the disciplined Roman legion that conquered the world. Before the Roman legion, the armies were undisciplined mobs. The lions changed all that. And, in" their day they were invin cible. . They remained invincible until the growing SOFTNESS of the Roman people under mined the discipline of the legions. That's worth remembering. BUT . that's enough preach ing. Let's get back to our new and thrilling satellite. It weighs, we are told, a lit tle better than four tons That's about the weight of an average-size house trailer .People LIVE in house trail ers. So, it follows, people may be able to live in satellites "and such out in space! Noth ing seems to be impossible in these days. ., I1THAT good will that do? " I don't know; But maybe it can takes the minds of DES POTS off the idea of trying to conquer the world. Maybe, by arousing their curiosity as to what lies in the illimitable reaches of outer space around us, it may turn their thinking away from war and conquest. When all outer space beck ons to the exploration that is beginning" to seem like a pos sibility, what by comparison conquering a world that now is no more important m itself than one grain of sand in a desert storm? Beck Tax Trial Slated to Reopen - Tacoma, Wash. (UPD The Dave Beck income tax eva sion trial was scheduled to reopen today for two days of proceedings before a Christ mas holiday recess. , Frank Brewster, president of the Joint Council 28 of the Teamsters Union, was to take the stand and. continue testi mony interrupted by a recess Friday which was brought about when Beck became ill. Federal Judge George H. Boldt called the recess after a physician examined the for mer teamster president and found him to be running a slight fever.
