Caril Yugate Given Life Term Lincoln, Neb.-flJPD-Caril Ann Fugate, 15, has been sen tenced to life imprisonment in the state reformatory for women for aiding mass slayer Charles Starkweather in one of his 11 confessed murders. Caril, wan but composed, looked directly at District Judge Harry Spencer,, her hands clasped behind her, as the judge pronounced sen tence. Spencer read the sentence after overruline Caril'a mo tion for a new trial. "No prejudicial error was committed," Spencer said. He made the ruling after a week's study of evidence pre sented in the four-week trial. The judge commented spe cifically on a charge by Caril's attorney, John Mc- Arthur, that the girl had been denied a fair trial because a member of the jury had made a one dollar bet that the girl would get the electric chair. The bet, Spencer said, was a reprehensible act and can not be condoned." Yet, he said, "the question here is whether it prevented the girl from having a fair trial." He said the court conclud ed there was no indication that the juror, W. A. Walenta, was motivated in any way by the bet. He added that evi dence in the case was con clusive, and that no attempt was made by Walenta to in fluence other jury members to impose the death sentence. Caril was convicted Nov. 21 of first degree murder while in perpetration of a robbery in connection with the slaying last January of Robert Jensen, 17. Jensen's murder was one of 11 confessed by Starkweath er, Caril's boy friend, and the one for which the redhaired slayer is slaled to die. War Cloud Near After Declaration Berlin-nJPD-The Communist I East German government warned the West Saturday t NiTfYS riorlaratinn nn the Berlin problem had brought the world closer to war. A statement by the Kast German cabinet said the West ern alliance had absolutely no right to intefere in Berlin. The cabinet statement amounted to complete rejec tion of the West's stand as put forth by the 15 NATO nations in a joint communique ending their Paris meeting Thursday. In the communique, the NATO allies had re-affirmed the West's determination to hold firm in Berline and urged that a solution to the overall German question be linked to East-West agree ments on disarmament and European security. The East German declara tion said the offer of NATO to hold the door open for discus sion of wider German prob lems was just a trick. It added that the East Ger mans intended to take over cotrol of air, land and water routes to isolated Berlin from the Russians no matter what the West says. The tough declaration indi cated strongly the East Ger mans plan to follow their line that the Russian turnover con trol of the vital supply life lines to East Germany would take place without consulta tion with the West. - Revenue Service Plans Information Washington (DPD The In ternal Revenue Service will run the biggest tax informa tion program in history be tween Jan. 1 and April 15, the end of the federal income tax filing period.
