The trial will resume tomorrow. Beck was examined during the noon recess and was found ill. U. S. District Court Judge George H. -Boldt an- Joy-Rider Requests Institution Holiday Spokane-flJPD - Kenneth F. Carreau, 25, entered a request before Superior Court Judge Balph Foley Friday that he be sent to the state reforma tory in time for Christmas. . Carreau made the request after he was re-sentenced to not more than 10 years on a joy-riding charge. Carreau orginally was sen tenced to not more than 20 years in 1956 but a recent Supreme Court ruling fixed the maximum sentence for joy-riding to 10 years. Foley ordered that Carreau be given credit for time al ready served and indicated the man's Christmas wish would probably be granted. Cascade Locks Man Dies in Auto Crash Cascade Locks-TOPD - Mrs. George Zulauf, 79, Cascade Locks, was killed Friday in a head-on collision two miles east of here on Highway 30. Two other persons were in jured, one seriously. Mrs. Zulauf was a passenger in a car diven by her husband, also 79. He was listed in seri ous condition at a Hood River hospital. Driver of the second car, Robert Carey, 31, was taken to the same hospital with in juries. After surgery, attend ants said late Friday night that his condition was "fairly good." Police said the accident oc curred about 3:30 p.m. The Zulauf auto was eastbound and Carey was heading west. nounced the recess at 1:30 p.m. During the morning session Frank W. Brewster, former president of the Western Con ference of Teamsters, testified that he could not recall that the union had ever made any loan to Beck prior to 1954. Repaid Every Cent Beck has contended that he borrowed $370,000 from union funds between 1950 and 1954, and that he had repaid every cent of the sum. Beck is being tried on charges of having evaded $240,000 in income taxes for the years 1950 to 1953. One of the keystones to his de fense is that he borrowed money during that period from the union. Borrowed money is tax-exempt. Brewster did recall that about 18 years ago he and Beck received a loan from the union to purchase a ser vice station across the street from Teamster headquarters in Seattle. Has Been Repaid Brewster added that this loan, for $5,000, had been re paid. Brewster is now president of Joint Council 28 of the Teamsters Union. He was top pled from his position as head of the Western Conference be cause of his opposition to the election of James R. Hoffa as Beck's successor. Outage Caused By Pole Shearing Portland -UPD- A section of the southeast area of Portland was without power for a brief period about midnight Fri day after a car sheared off a utility pole at the top of Mt. Scott. Portland Generel Electric officials said power was re stored in less than hour after the accident. The automobile was driven by Gordon Pekrus, 16, Port land, who escaped injury. Atlas, Sputnik, III Seen in Air Chase Adelaide, Australia - (UPD -Scientists at the Woomera Rocket Range saw American and Russian earth satellites chasing each other across the sky yesterday. "The Atlas moved slowly on a west-east elevation about 70 degrees," said radio ama teur Gordon Bowen. "By con trast, the Sputnik III scooted across the sky like lighting a few minutes later. , Bowen watched the two satellites and also heard clear, continuous, low-pitched sig nals which apparently came from the Atlas, the largest man - made object ever put into orbit about the earth. Federal Agency Asks Enlarged Fishing Area Anchorage, Alaska-(UPD-The U.S. Fish and Wildlife service Friday proposed enlargement of the Karluk district of the Kodiak fishing area. The enlarged district will include all known fisheries along the migration route of the red salmon. The object is to get a better flow of escape ment and thus get more spawning red salmon from the middle of the migration run. About one-third of rural roads in the U. S. are sur faced. Army Awards Contract To Heintz Construction Washington-(DPD-The Army Corps of Engineers Friday awarded a contract for rail road embankment protection to the R. A. Heintz Construc tion company, Portland. The work will take place in the Ice Harbor. Reservoir area and on the Snake river. The contract is for $2,242,215. Checks totaling $599 and $9.43 in coins were not taken. " , Judge Van Vactor's office is in the basement of the court house. of Free Plenty Alfuras Defeats School Measure Alturas, Calif. - (UPD In record turnout, voters Thurs day defeated a proposed tax increase of 80 cents per $100 valuation for school purposes. The vote was 568 to 344 against, in the special elec tion. A 50-cent proposed increase was defeated last May. This week's special election was called by the board of direc tors of the Alturas elementary School District to raise funds for next year. The board said that defeat of the proposal would mean a severe curtailment in educa tional services at the end of the present school year. The board said the cafeteria would be discontinued, school bus transportation would be curtailed, the band would be discontinued along with the music program, and accident insurance on the pupils will be eliminated. Lafta Found Guilty In Dynamite Trial Portland - flJPD - A 25-year-old Portland merchant sea man, Barry C. Latta, was found guilty by a circuit court jury here Friday afternoon on a charge of attempting to des troy property with explosives. A jury of 11 women and one man returned the unani mous verdict in about three hours. Latta and two companions, George E. Layman, 19, and Roger H. Mobley, 3, of Beav erton, were arrested in con nection with a dynamiting and shooting spree Oct. 25 and 26 in Portland. Mobley and Layman both pleaded guilty to charges of throwing ' dynamite charges from their car and shooting up a parked automobile. Sentencing of Latta was set for next Tuesday by Circuit Judge James R. Bain. Lay man and Mobley are await ing sentencing on similar charges. Indian Chief Sitting Bull is buried in Fort Yates, N. D.
