He Dr. Alvarez calls himself "The Servant" because he will give advice over the telephone to anyone in trouble. He sel dom sees those who have con sulted him, and he charges no fees. He has done a lot of good, and the number of peo ple who call him has been in creasing greatly. As he says, there is no loneliness like that of a person alone in a great city. Sometimes such people are frantic to talk to someone who will be sympathetic and understanding and helpful. The Rev. Chad Varah says he has saved many people from suicide. This year he ex pects to be talking to over 2,000 persons. Recently he got a grant from the Oulbenkian Foundation which will enable him to have a trained staff with a curate who is trained in psychiatric work, two clerks, two telephone girls, a psychi atric social worker, and a sec retary. He is now going to have someone ready to answer his phone 24 hours a day. His group calls itself the Samari tans. They are planning to ex pand the work into other cities. Many Will Call Stranger Many despairing people who can't face their doctor, their priest, or their lawyer will telephone a stranger. The person who telephones Father Varah knows that no matter what his confession may be, his confidence will be held in violate. I've often marveled, es pecially during the 25 years in which I was at the Mayo Clinic, that many a person who had come a long distance with a terrible problem eating at his heart would refuse to tell me about it, but would tell the whole story to the per son sitting next to him in the waiting-room! Naturally, he or she could never tell anyone back home, because soon the whole town would know it. Oftentimes these people with a story that could shame them will not tell it to their local doctor in a small town for fear he will tell his wife or his office nurse, and they may talk. Many and many a time it has taken me 10 days of talk ing to a person before I got the real secret perhaps a somewhat disgraceful one. Then I knew what was tearing at the patient's heart. For in stance, a lovely distinguished looking woman who belongs to a famous family told me that what was killing her was that her favorite granddaugh ter a beautiful girl of 18 would every so often go on a bender, and then would de velop the morals of an alley cat. My poor patient lived in constant fear of hearing of a new escapade. No wonder she couldn't sleep! Mayo Foundation Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation business-like, and specialized medicine is the inability or the unwillingness of many doctors to talk to their patients, and to give them enough time so that the story can be told. Today, it not infrequently happens that a woman gets a hysterec tomy when all that she really needed very much was a long talk with her doctor. Time and time again I have seen a woman have gallstones re moved that weren't causing any symptoms whatsoever. All j that was wrong with her was that she had at home a drink ing or a chasing husband, or a mentally retarded child, or a mother-in-law with whom she could not get along. Perhaps one solution is to have more kind Father Var ah's who, at any time of day or night, will answer the phone, and give the person some sympathy and comfort and advice. Perhaps, then the person can pick up the heavy burden again, and carry on a bit farther. In this country I. know of one similar organization that is saving thousands of people from suicide. It is called the "National Save - A - L i f e League," and its office is at 505 Fifth Ave., New York 17, N.Y. The League also is help ing the children of suicides, which is wonderful. The League much needs money with which to carry on this work. Dr. Alvarez' new booklet on nerves may be obtained by sending 25 cents and a large, stamped, self - addressed en velope with your request to Dr. Walter C. Alvarez, Dept. MMT, The Register and Tri bune Syndicate, Box 957, Des Moines 4, Iowa. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand .that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail.
