Goldfine, whose relationship with Pres ident Eisenhower's assistant Sherman Adams led to Adams' resignation under fire, has been indicted by a Federal Grand Jury for contempt Kansas Election To Be Contested Topeka, Kan. - (UPD - Demo crats today started an official battle for the northwest Kan sas congressional seat held by Republican veteran Wint Smith, a self-styled conserva tive. Smith recently was certi fied as having won reelection Nov. 4 to a seventh term by a 223-vote margin over Elmo Mahoney, a Dorrance, Kan., farmer. However, district Demo cratic chairman, Norbert Drei- ling of Hays, Kan., said irreg ularities and errors in five counties of the 26-county dis trict would shift 253 votes, giving Mahoney the victory by a 20-vote margin. Dreihng said that the Dem ocrats will contest Smith's election before either the House Elections committee or the Special Committee to In vestigate Campaign Expendi tures. Smith was in Washing ton but could not be reached for comment. Smith, a tall stern former Kansas farm boy, is against the New Deal, Fair Deal, ex cessive foreign spending and labor bossism. Drunk Driving Trial Near Jury Los Aengeles - (UPD - The drunk driving trial of Chi cago columnist Irv Kupcinet was expected to go to the jury today. The 46-year-old writer who was arrested last Aug. 26 with Gregg Sherwood, 34, wife of auto heir Horace Dodge II, told the municipal court jury Thursday that he had only one drink of weak scotch at several places he and the for mer showgirl visited shortly before his arrest. He testified that he had lost his way while driving Miss Sherwood home and was trying to find directions when police stopped him and gave him a field sobriety test. Several witnesses followed Kupcinet to the stand and testified that he was a light drinker. Both defense and prosecution testimony was concluded. Mann's. K Lights the ' . A total of 48 acts partici pated in the event Wednesday at Medford High school. The total included the play-off of winners in the all-star event. Diane Mars and Gail Bow den of the Ethel Mars school of dance, Grants Pass, won the dance division with a tap dance. Other winners in their categories were Keith Bak shas of Caesar Muzzioli's Ac cordian school; Jackie John son, Eagle Point, vocal num ber; four girls won the nov elty division with a number "The Jailhouse Rock." Activities include mixed volleyball at 9 p.m. and swim ming from 9:30 p.m. until 11 p.m., and dancing.
