Kansas Election
To Be Contested
Topeka, Kan. - (UPD - Demo
crats today started an official
battle for the northwest Kan
sas congressional seat held by
Republican veteran Wint
Smith, a self-styled conserva
tive. Smith recently was certi
fied as having won reelection
Nov. 4 to a seventh term by a
223-vote margin over Elmo
Mahoney, a Dorrance, Kan.,
farmer.
However, district Demo
cratic chairman, Norbert Drei-
ling of Hays, Kan., said irreg
ularities and errors in five
counties of the 26-county dis
trict would shift 253 votes,
giving Mahoney the victory
by a 20-vote margin.
Dreihng said that the Dem
ocrats will contest Smith's
election before either the
House Elections committee or
the Special Committee to In
vestigate Campaign Expendi
tures. Smith was in Washing
ton but could not be reached
for comment.
Smith, a tall stern former
Kansas farm boy, is against
the New Deal, Fair Deal, ex
cessive foreign spending and
labor bossism.
Drunk Driving
Trial Near Jury
Los Aengeles - (UPD - The
drunk driving trial of Chi
cago columnist Irv Kupcinet
was expected to go to the
jury today.
The 46-year-old writer who
was arrested last Aug. 26 with
Gregg Sherwood, 34, wife of
auto heir Horace Dodge II,
told the municipal court jury
Thursday that he had only
one drink of weak scotch at
several places he and the for
mer showgirl visited shortly
before his arrest.
He testified that he had
lost his way while driving
Miss Sherwood home and was
trying to find directions when
police stopped him and gave
him a field sobriety test.
Several witnesses followed
Kupcinet to the stand and
testified that he was a light
drinker. Both defense and
prosecution testimony was
concluded.
