Mxffsrd, Oregon, Friday, December 12. 1958 Europeans Name Herb Elliott Sportsman of Year for 1958 Frankfurt-CTD-Herb Elliott of Australia was named the sportsman of 1958 today by a panel of European sports editors from both sides of the "Iron Curtain." The Aussie miler won the nod from the panel for two amazing feats-a 3:54.5 mile at Dublin's Santry Track on Aug. 6 and a 3:36 record for ILLINOIS VALLEY Building Given To City By RUTH RAUSCH Cave Junction - The City of Cave Junction is the re cipient of a donation of the small "Skywatch" building, which was the headquarters of the local unitl of the U.S. Air Force Ground Observer Corps. Harold Haslock, who has been supervisor of the local unit, in making the presen tation, explained that inas much as the GOC units across the nation are being disband ed, the building would no longer be in use. Since the structure was built wholly through dona tions of both labor and ma terials it could not be sold The council will arrange to have the building moved to the newly-purchased city pro perty on Lister st Newcomers to the Valley are Mr. and Mrs. Vern Luke from Salem. At present they are caretakers at the Twin Pines motel. Luke plans to be employed in the lumber business here next season Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Davis have just returned from a three -weeks' trip to Ham mond, Ind., where they attend ed a reunion of the Davis family held at the home of Mrs. Ruby Davis, mother of the family. AH but one of the 38 members of the family were present. This was the first time in 20 years that all the members were together. The local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers met Tues day at the home of Mrs. Carl Weiting at the Siskiyou Moun tain resort for a turkey din ner and their Christmas party. Mothers of pre-school chil dren are reminded to call Mrs. Jim Allen at 0903 for their appointment at the Well Child clinic which will be on Wednesday, Dec. 17. Mr. and Mrs. Karl Preston and Karen of O'Brien spent several days recently in Los Angeles. During their ab sence. Mrs. Hubert Penning er and Mrs. Jim Cooke were in charge of the O'Brien store. In the six years that the United Press International has been polling European ex perts on their sportsman of the year choice, it was the first time a European athlete did not win the title. The poll also reflected Aus tralia's emergence as a lead- Last Saturday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Pulley of O'Brien, with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Huber of Grants Pass, celebrated the Pulley's wed ding anniversary at the Mon Desire in Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Ian Allison of Santa Rosa, Calif., were guests of the Roy Waldrons last week. Allison, who is with the Machinery Exchange co., was here in connection with his line of work, buy ing and selling machinery. The engagement of Miss Fern Mickey to Dennis L. Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. La Verne Brown of Yuba City Calif., has been announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs Sam W. Mickey. The bride-elect graduated from Illinois Valley High school with the class of 1958 and has been employed by the Valley Drug store here. Her fiance is a surveyor and has been stationed in the Il linois Valley area. Bob Martin, the only nom inee for the five year term, was elected a director of the Illinois Valley Rural Fire Protection District, receiving the total of the nine votes cast at the polling place in Kerby Monday. Larry Musil has declared tha the customary free Christ mas picture show at the Ivy theatre for all the youngsters in the valley will be shown on Tuesday, Dec. 23. The Cave Junction com munity Christmas tree will again be erected and decorat ed by the Lions club. It is hoped the tree will be put in place over this weekend. The new Texaco station is on the site formerly used for the tree and a new loca tion has been under discus sion. It was tentatively plan ned to erect the tree on the lot near the Caves informa tion booth at the intersection of Caves highway and Red wood highway. A representative from the state employment office will be at the American Legion hall every Thursday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. so that un emplo yment compensation claims may be field. Any individual family de siring to select and cut their own Christmas tree may do so by first obtaining a "free use permit" from the Ranger station. This permit entitles them to select and cut one tree. Australian swimmer Jon Konrads was third with four firsts and 396 points, followed by Brazil's world champion soccer team and Roger Ri vierne, a French cyclist. The Russians, whose Vla dimir Kuts won the sports man's award in 1956 and 1957, finished out of the top 10 for the first time, winding up with an aggregate point total of 291 compared to the Aussie total of 1,317. Gasoline Dealers Increasing Prices Portland tUPD Many retail gasoline dealers reported to day they are raising prices back to levels which existed before a prolonged price war. However, some still were selling regular gasoline at 23.9 cents per gallon. Charles Goforth, president of the Portland Gasoline Deal ers association, said efforts to end the war appeared to be meeting with success. Prices of those returning to previous levels ranged from 31.9 to 33.9 for regular and 35.9 to 37.9 for ethyl. Roseburg House Move Oifered Portland -(UPB- A Portland house mover offered today to move the 100-year-old Lillie Moore home at cost for the people of Roseburg. The property on which the home stands was sold at a gov ernment auction Wednesday to make way for a parking lot. Groups in Roseburg want to save the home on the property for a historical monument. Yardley, last season's Na tional Basketball association scoring leader, tallied 37 points Thursday night to give Detroit its second straight win over the St. Louis Hawks, 107-101, and move within three games of the Western Division leaders. The balding Yardley, aided by Gene Shue, gave Detroit the lead shortly after the start of the game and the Pistons were never headed as they won their third in a row. Shue, who scored 32 points, netted 19 in the first half as the Pistons gained a 53-45 advantage at intermission. St. Louis, p aced by Bob Pettit and Cliff Hagan, staged a second-half rally that twice cut Detroit's lead to three points. With four minutes to play and Detroit leading, 96-93, Yardley and Shue combined to stave off the Hawk upris ing and give the Pistons their third win in five games with St. Louis, Pettit, the league's leading scorer, paced St. Louis with 27 points. Hagan had 22. Debut Spoiled The Boston Celtics spoiled former Temple university star Guy Rodgers' NBA debut as they defeated the Warriors, 123-114, in the second half of the Philadelphia double- header. Bob Cousy, with 28 points and Bill Sharman, with 26, paced the Celtic attack that moved Boston to within 14 percentage points of the East ern division leading' New York Knickerbockers. Rodg ers, on terminal leave, from the Army, tallied 24 points in 28 minutes of play. Arizin had 29. In the only other game played, Syracuse edged Min neapolis, 101-99, as player- coach Paul Seymour dropped in two free throws with 24 seconds to go in overtime. Rookie Elgin Baylor, the game's high scorer with 31 points, sank three straight baskets for Minneapolis in the final minute and a half to tie the contest at 93-all at the end of regulation time. Al Bianchi was high for Syra cuse with 27. Smoking by Boys In School Told Chicago (UPD A neatly dressed boy told a coroner's jury today that he had seen some of the "big boys' smok ing at times in the basement of Our Lady of the Angels School, which burned Dec. 1 with a loss of 92 lives. Frank Grimaldi, 11, was a sixth grade student at the school. He was a student in room 206, from which all es caped. Grimaldi, who won the thanks of the jury at conclu sion of his testimony, said that while he had seen boys smoking in the basement washroom, he had not seen them smoking in the back stairway. This was the north east stairway which funneled flame and smoke into the sec ond floor of the school. It is on the other side of the build ing. Questioned on this point, he said the "big boys," meaning eighth grade students, some times used the stairway. Forestry Group Elects Idaho Man San Francisco -(UPD-Arthur M. Roberts, McCall, Idaho, was elected president of the Western Forestry and Conser vation asspciation today in the final session of the organiza tion's 49th annual meeting. Sport Parade New York (HPD With the college court season barely under way, Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati and Bob Boozer of Kansas State already have All-America honors locked up today but the race for the other three spots appears wide open. The amazing item, if you look back on collegiate bas ketball of just a decade ago, is the tremendous overall in crease in height of the college kids. Rare is the team which doesn't have a ( growing boy of 6 feet, 6 inches and they go right on up into the seven foot stratosphere. 1 Which means that a boy has to be more than merely tall to get the attention that such height formerly gained auto matically. Robertson and Boozer aren't midgets, by a long shot. The "wonderful O" from Cin cinnati is 6 feet, 5 inches. Boozer, who was good enough last year to beat out Wilt (The Stilt) Chamberlain as the Big Eight's player of the year, is 6 feet, 8 inches tall. By OSCAR FRALEY Sport Writer United Press Pick's Pitt's Hennon The three players who are this corner's choice to round out the All-American five this year are Bailey Howell of Mississippi State, Johnny Cox of Kentucky and a midget who stands a mere 5 feet, 11 inches Don Hennon of Pitt. This passes up a lot of real hot shots. But our second team at this writing would be Jerry West of West Virginia, Tom Hawkins of Notre Dame, Johnny Green of Michigan State, Alan Seiden of St. John's and Bruno Boin of Washington. Robertson is everybody's shoo-in. The big cat from In dianalopis set a Madison Square Garden record last season with 56 points and, de spite a bad back, recently tossed in 45 against NYU. Par ticularly amazing, in view of the fact that he is only a jun ior, is Joe Lapchick's analysis that he could "make the pros right now." Boozer, too, looks a cinch to get most everybody's vote when it comes around to vot ing time. That is if he plays anything like he has the past two years in rewriting Kansas State scoring records. He proved his all-around worth by handcuffing Chamberlain while pouring in 32 points himself. Fabulous Rebounder The 6 foot, 7 inch Howell could come with a tremen dous rush if he gets the pub licity he deserves, always a prerequisite when shooting for All-American honors. He is a fabulous rebounder and was the Southeastern Confer ence's most valuable player the past two years. Cox is the clutch player who figures to be the "glue" man as Kentucky rushes back toward the top again. Frail looking and "only" 6 feet, 4 inches, he is a rugged re bounder. Hennon is one of those rari ties, a "little" man who can play with the giants. He was raised for such chores, how ever. His father coached Hen non's high school team and used such gimmicks as teach ing Don to dribble with glass es taped so he couldn't see the ball and scrimmaging in gal loshes to improve his agility and speed. Whether he'll make it might be questioned, but nobody is j going to stop Robertson and Boozer. , -Jeco eh njjjJML PLANE CRASHES IN CITY A huge Navy aerial tanker crashed and burned in a residential section of Norfolk, Va., destroying several homes and killing two children, in addition to killing four crewmen aboard the tanker. Grange News Roxy Ann Grange At the regular meeting of Roxy Ann Grange Friday, Dec. 5, Mrs. Niedermeyer and Mrs. Jonosky of Phoenix Grange "were visitors. Mrs. Lewis Bish was given the first and second degrees and E. Bartolomei was given the third and fourth. Roscoe Roberts, insurance agent, said he had conducted 20 insurance schools over the state. He announced auto in surance is getting higher all the time, and fire insurance has been almost doubled in unprotected areas. r Clarence Pfnister asked that all sales slips be turned in by the end of this quarter. He was speaking for his wife, who is home with a broken leg. Mrs. Alva Sims announced that HEC met at the home of Mrs. Madge Nowlin. Mrs. Kenneth Shaw was cohostess. There were 20 members and one guest present. The HEC party will be held Saturday, Dec. 20., All ladies of the Grange and their husbands are invited. The next meeting of the Grange has been cancelled. Grange party will be held Saturday, Dec. 20. All in the community are invited; each bring a toy for their own children. Ladies of the Grange are asked to bring cookies. Members voted to go to Eagle Point on Sunday, Dec. 21 for installation of the new officers. Chaplain Mrs. Paul Dalton reported Mrs. Charles Whitch er home from the hospital after surgery.
