Billy Cannon Voted II Pi Player of Year By JOHN GRIFFIN United Press International New York -4CPB-Billy Can non, junior triple-threat star who believes Louisiana State's national champions can post another perfect record next season, today was named col lege football's "Player of the Year" for 1958 in a nation wide poll conducted by Unit ed Press International. The Tiger halfback, who previously was voted "Back of the Year," received the first-place votes of 85 of the 293 sports writers and broad casters throughout the nation who took part in the bal loting. Frank Albert- Quits Forty-Niner Post By HAL WOOD San Francisco-fUPIP-Frankle Albert resigned as head coach of the San Francisco Forty Niners today "because I love my family more than I do football." Albert said the reason he decided to quit was because his wife and three daughters were being subjected too much to the pressure of the game. "My wife and daughters. aged 15 and 12, ran out of supermarkets where they could shop without being in sulted," said Albert. "My old est daughter, Nancy, quit com ing to football games this year because she couldn't stand to sit in the stands and hear her father called a bum. "My second daughter, Janie quit coming about a month ago; and my wife, who was sick, missed her first home game last week. He un derwent an appendectomy yesterday. Club President Vic Mora- bito, who sat in on the press conference as Albert an nounced his resignation after three years at the helm, said he had no immediate plans for a successor. "But I know what we want and don't anticipate any trouble finding that man," said Morabito. "I don't know how long it will be before we announce the successor. All I'm worried about right now is winning Sunday's game against the Baltimore Colts." Morabito said Albert called him Thursday night to an nounce his resignation. Hughes missed last Sun day's game against the Lions at Detroit because of a sore neck but left a hospital bed to work out with the club Thursday. Following the workout, the former Tulsa star said he will "give it a try" against the Browns. However, two of the Giants' other Key operatives still are regarded as doubtful starters. They are Pat Summerall, the team s place-kicking special ist, and Jack Stroud, rugged offensive lineman. HOCKEY AMERICAN LEAGUE United Press International The American Hockey league season hasn't reached the half-way mark yet, but already there is a bitter battle shaping up for fourth place, the final qualifying spot for the Calder Cup playoffs. The Springfield Indians hold down the fourth spot, but they are 'only two points ahead of the Rochester Ameri cans and the Providence Reds, who are tied for fifth. The Indians could loosen the log-jam tonight when they meet the Americans at Roch ester. The . Amfrks have been especially tough for Spring field this season, though, hav ing taken four of the five meetings between the teams In the only other AHL ac tivity tonight. Providence is at Cleveland. The eight were members of the state tournament squad. Heading the group is Bob Peterson, 6-4, only member of the "Big Four" of Klamath's titular team. He won all state and top rebounding lau rels at Eugene and was third among Southern Oregon con ference scorers. Also back is Smiley Herrera, 5-5, normally the fifth man in the Pelican starting combination. Others are Paul Bishop, 6-1, Dave and Don Delap, 5-11, Steve Binney, 6 feet, Bob Drace 6-2, and Jim Hall, 6-2. In addition to these players on the current varsity crew are Bob Lewis, 6-5, Dean Dun- son, 6 feet, Don Eastman, 6-2, Jim Parks, 5-10, Bill Santo, 6-3, and Ron Olvera, 5-9. Dick Daugherty Plans To Retire Los Angeles (UPD Dick Daugherty, 29, veteran line backer for the Los Angeles Rams, says he will retire from professional football after Sunday's game with the Green Bay Packers at the Coliseum. The former University of Oregon star who has been with the Rams since 1951 when he started out as an of fensive guard said Thursday he intended to take a position with the William R. Staats Co., a brokerage firm at Glen- dale, Calif. jbast year Daugherty was chosen by the Rams as the most valuable player and only last week he won a game ball for his fine playing against Baltimore.
