Now things are different and women are just about everywhere in industry and finance except as members of the big stock exchanges. . Strangely enough, no wom en have ever applied for membership in the New York Stock Exchange. The ex change's constitution doesn't bar women, but that's no sign it would be easy for one to get into the organization. Requirements for member ship on the big board are sim ple. A person must be over 21 years of age, in good health, and in the securities business. The last is a rule not in the constitution. A two thirds vote of the governing committee is necessary for approval. And, of course, one must be able to raise some $125,000 to buy a "seat." Growing Future Women in top places in in dustry are growing in num ber and their future in man agement is growing. Claire Trieb Slote, a writer on things economic, has the following comment in the current Dun's Review and Modern Industry: "The woman executive, slowed in her climb to the top by long-standing preju dices and misconceptions, is being revaluated by manage ments faced with a stortage of first - rate administrative talent." Mrs. Slote, heYself a moth er of two, is a one-time editor of Modern Industry. She notes that the relative ly rare woman at the top of management is probably there because she s more than just a little bit better than her male competitors, not because she slipped in while men were scarce. "Now more than ever," she says, "industry needs truly Grange News... Currently women are found in virtually all occupations and professions, says Mrs. Slote, and today there are 1,047,000 women managers of whom 485,000 are salaried, 385,000 are self-employed in retail trade and 177,000 are self-employed in non-retailing business. Half and Half The Department of Labor says that of the 10 million in crease expected in the work ing force between 1955 and 1965 half will be women. "Even with women filling the kind of specialist jobs that aren't the best path to administrative leadership the sheer force of numbers in every field is bound to push the talented managers among them up the ladder," Mrs. Slote concludes. The Hat Corporation of America has just named Es telle Lee its advertising man ager. She had been advertis ing manager of Dunhill, mak er of smokers' articles, gift items and toiletries. Bernard Salesky, Hat Corp. president, commented as fol lows on her appointment: "The woman's viewpoint is increasingly significant in the development and presentation of male apparel because wom en directly and indirectly in fluence some 75 per cent of sales." Women make up more than half the nation's stockholders. It wouldn't be too much of a surprise in the financial dis trict if one made the grade to membership of the New York Stock Exchange.
