Finally, the clothes must be ironed. That once could mean but one thing - exhausting hours standing over an iron ing board. But modern iron ers have taken the physical work out of ironing while at the same time drastically re ducing the time needed for this operation. Is it so surprising then that women wno own moaern laundries have a sunny dispo sition when it comes to wash day. GOOD CATCH New York -fl!PD- Benjamin Kroczak, a 54-year-old Brook lyn grocer, was standing across the street from his store, looked up and saw two-year-old Stephen May totter ing on a third-floor window sill. Kroczak, who limps from a wound suffered during World War II, dashed across the street, braced himself and caught . Stephen as he fell. Neither was injured. HIGHWAY RISKS New York-flJPD-Four out of five drivers 60 years old and over suffer from eyesight problems that make them a risk on the highway, accord ing to the Motorists' Vision Committee of the American Optometric Association. Teleprinter Rate Hike Effective On Private Lines Washington -flJPD Tempor ary teleprinter rate increases on Western Union Telegraph Co. and American Telephone & Telegraph Co. private lines went into effect Tuesday. The increases are designed to yield the companies $15 million more in revenues a year. The Federal Communica tions Commission allowed the teletypewriter service hikes to go into effect despite heavy protests from major, users of the service. Appeal Rejected The commission Mondav re jected an 11th hour appeal by the New York Central Rail road to hold up the increases for three months to give the commission time to reach a decision in its long . range study of "reasonable" charges for such services. United Press International, the American Newspaper Pub lishers Association, the Na tional Association of Broad casters, the American Stock Exchange, Teleregister, three Trans -Lux news companies, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and the federal gov ernment's General Services Administration were among major users who strongly pro tested the boost. By order of the FCC both Western Union and AT&T must keep accurate accounts of their increased charges in case the interim hikes are later found to be too high and refunds are ordered. Western Union's rate hikes are expected to yield it $5 million in new income an nually and the AT&T hikes will bring in $8,400,000 a year more to that firm. Would Curtail Service UPI contended the in creases, if allowed to take effect, would force small newspapers and radio stations to curtail or get rid of their news agency services, thus re- j- i . The FCC has on file some 250 letters of protest from leading newspapers, radio sta tions and transportation com panies stating that the hikes will adversely affect them. UPI estimated the new rates will cost it more than $700, 000 a year extra in charges from 'AT&T and about $23, 700 from Western Union. My husband and I are terribly worried about our 20-year-old daugh ter who dates men out of our faith. We aren't prejudiced or narrow-minded and we think there are good and bad indi viduals in all churches but we don't think mixed marriages are good. There are so many problems in 'marriage, why look for trouble? We have tried to get Elaine to come to the various social activities connected with our church, but she either refuses or she goes and then com plains for weeks afterward about the awful time she had and how much she disliked all the young men at the gath ering. She criticizes them so much that there is nothing left of them by the time she gets through. But I don't see where the ones she goes out with are so superior. Elaine T. I am not re ligious and it means nothing at all to me to marry within the faith my parents claim I belong to. How, by the way, can you belong to faith you don't believe in? Anyway, as it happens, I have not yet married any of the men I've been dating and there is nobody in sight about whom I feel serious. I can't see any harm in dating out side your religion. Dating is not the same as marriage. My parents just don't un derstand that I can't relax and enjoy myself if I am forced to go out with one of the jerks they recommend. Somehow the ones they want me to go out with are always the worst specimens. They don't treat me nearly as nicely as the boys I have dated out of my own choice. I can't date to please my parents. Her wholesale rejection of the young men of her own faith is not a rational act. It is a n unreasonable prejudice against her own kind. , In addition to devotion to, God according to certain pre cepts, religious faith repre sents a family tradition that has been handed down through the ages. Certain tra ditions may change with the generations, but total reject ion of the faith of our father involves a rejection of a good part of ourselves. We'll make allowances for true religious conversion and for the fact that love and friendship dissolves barriers, but the fact remains that those who consistently go out of their way to find friends and marriage partners outside their own faith', have a com pulsion to destroy part of their own personality. As lonf as this destructive need ex ists, the possibilities are not in favor of a successful mar riage. Family pressure probably won't make much of a dent in Elaine's attitudes, but wt urge her to try to be a little more self-critical and to try to find the real facts behind her unreasonable prejudict against her own kind.
