Louisiana State Awarded Collegiate TttoaII Diadefa Rational 29 Tutors Pick Tigers In UPI Vote By JOE SARGIS Baton Rouge, La. tjPD Coach Paul Dietzel said today that the selection of Louisiana States as college football's na tional champion "is a wonder ful honor to the university and a once-in-a-lifetime ex perience to members of the team." "We had no idea we might be national champions when the season started," the 34 year-old coach continued "But somewhere along the line we caught fire. It is a tremendous honor and we are deeply grateful to United Press International." New York-flJPD-The Louisi ana State Tigers, picked to finish ninth this year in their own 12 -team Southeastern conference, today were voted 1958 national college football champions by . the United Press International Board of Coaches. . Twenty-nine of the 35 lead lng coaches, whose weekly ratings generally have become recognized as the most au thoritative in college football, picked Louisiana State first on their final ballots. Four coaches cast first-place votes for second-ranked Iowa, one picked third-ranked Army for first and the other first-place vote went to the Air Force Academy. Coach Paul Dietzel's Tigers, who swept through 10 games to emerge as the nation's only major undefeated-untied team and gain a Sugar Bowl berth opposite Clemson, received a total of 331 points. LSU thus fell only 10 points shy of a perfect score of 350. Becomes Steady Team The Tigers, ranked 17th in the early UPI ratings, became one of the few steady teams in an unpredictable 1958 cam paign. They were the sixth team to appear at the top of the UPI ratings during the first eight weeks but sank their claws In and held on after taking over the No. 1 spot Nov. 11. Louisiana State averaged 27.5 points a game while lim Iting its victims to a 5.3-point average. The Tigers started by whipping Rice and went on to down Alabama, Hardin Simmons, Miami (Fla.), Ken tucky, Florida, Mississippi, Duke, Mississippi State and Tulane en route to their best season in 50 years. The Tigers had only two close shaves, edging Florida, 10-7, and Mississippi State, 7-6. In addition to their 29 first- place votes, the Tigers re ceived two for second place, two for third and one for fourth. Points are distributed on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis tor votes from first through tenth place. SP 2-71 19 Vale Retains A-2 State Championship McMinnville (UPD The A football crown still belongs to Vale after Saturday's final nmi here in which the Vik ings topped Willamina, 13-6, to capture their fourth cham oionshiD in the last five years Dick Fulwyler of Vale and Bob Nokleby of Willamina put on a rousing duel here before more than 2500 fans. Fulwyer scored all of Vale's points and carried the ball 37 times for 111 of the Vikings 156 rushing yards. Robertson Tops Cage Attractions By JOHN GRIFFIN United Press International NCAA champion Kentucky and National scoring champ ion Oscar Robertson of Cin cinnati will serve a s the fea ture attractions on the open ing program of the 1958-59 college basketball season to night. In every section of the country cage teams that have been straining at the leash waiting for the official Dec. 1 starting date will be rushed into action. Among them will be many of the top-ranked teams and players from last season. Kentucky, surprise winner of the NCAA tournament last spring, has lost all starters ex cept ace Johnny Cox but, with tall replacements on hand, is expected to start an other triumphant campaign for Coach Adolph Rupp by blasting Florida State. Face Indiana State Robertson, who racked up the scoring crown as a scho- more last year with an aver age of 35.1 points per game, will be on view m a home opening game against Indiana state. Little Don Hennon of Pitts burgh, with Robertson the only returning member of the 1957-58 UPI All-America team, also will be "at work," leading the Panthers in a visit to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a game against Michigan. Kansas, which had expect ed to have seven-foot All America Wilt (The Stilt) Chamberlain on hand for an other season, will be without him when it opens the season against Rice. Chamberlain has turned professional with the Harlem Globetrotters. Elgin Baylor of Seattle, also an All-America as a junior last year, now plays pro ball with the Minneapolis Lakers. Guy Rodgers of Temple, fifth member of last year's glamor five, graduated. West Virginia, voted the No. 1 team in the nation by the UPI Board of Coaches at the end of the last regular season, will be opening to night with a road game against Furman. The Moun taineers have lost three start ers but still have star Jerry West and are figured very strong. NIT Champs Open Seattle, runner-up in the NCAA tournament last year but facing an uncertain future without Baylor, starts learn ing that future Tuesday night against College of the Pacific. Xavier of Ohio, surprise winner of last spring's Na tional Invitation Tournament at New York, will present virtually the same line-up headed by red-haired back court star Hank Stein when it opens Tuesday night against John Carroll. Kentucky is the defending champion in the Southeastern Conference, West Virginia in the Southern, and Cincinnati in the Missouri Valley. Other conference kings include In diana in the Big Ten, Dart mouth in the Ivy, Duke in the Atlantic Coast, Kansas State in the Big Eight, Arkansas and SMU in the Southwest, San Francisco in the West Coast, and California and Ore gon State in the Pacific Coast. Field Catching Knickerbockers United State International The field is starting to catch up with the New York Knickerbockers in the East ern division of the National Basketball association. The Philadelphia Warriors, led by the clutch shooting of Lenny Rosenbluth, came from behind to bunk the Knicks, 103-100, Sunday in a nationally-televised game. In Sunday's only other league action, the Minneapo lis Lakers also staged a late rally to down the Cincinnati Royals, 84-77. Elgin Baylor tossed in 21 points for the Lakers while Dave Piontek led the losers with 22. Nokleby scored Willamina's only touchdown and wound up as the state scoring champ. He wound up with 221 points in 12 games. He scored on a 53-yard pass play from Bill McMillan. Vale took the lead in the first quarter with Fulwyler going over from six yards out and adding the extra point. Fulwyler carried the ball for eight of nine times in the touchdown drive. Willamina came back in the second quarter to get the equalizing touchdown but couldn't kick the PAT. It stood at 7-6 until the fourth quarter when Nokleby elected to run on fourth down and missed the first down by inches. Vale took over on the Wil lamina 39 and scored in 15 Dlavs. The wih was the 24th in a row for Vale. U of O 3rd In PC Loop Harrier Run Stanford, Calif. - (UPD - The University of Southern Cali fornia won the Pacific Coast conference cross country meet Saturday with Troy's pint sized star Max Truex winning individual laurels. Truex ran the 4.1 miles over the Stanford golf course in 20:15.8 to break the meet record. The hopes of favored Ore gon crumbled when its lead ing runner, Jim Grelle, be came ill and could not finish. The Ducks took third place. The winners: 1. Truex (USC) 20:15.8; 2. Wallace (Stan.) 20:25; 3. Wyatt (Idaho) 21:00; 4. Gaylord (Cal.) 21:02, Rodriguez (UCLA) 21:06. Team Standings: USC 39, Stanford 48, Oregon 53, Idaho 57, UCLA 58, California 66, Washington 114, Oregon State 118. Huskies Nab Oregon B School Toga Sutherlin- (UPD -Merrill won its first state class B football title - and did it convincingly Saturday-drubbing .Yoncalla, 60-7. A pair of halfbacks - Bud Maupin and John Haskins -did most of the damage for the Huskies. Maupin scored four touchdowns and had 5 extra points. Haskins chipped in with three touchdowns. The Huskies scored at least two touchdowns in every per iod, tallying three times in the opening quarter. Yoncala s only score came in the thijd quarter. Merrill rushed and passed for 456 yards - 329 on .the ground and 127 m the air. Maupin personally accounted for 240 of these yards. Ducks, OSC Vie Tonight Corvallis r-UPD- Oregon and Oregon State open their 1958 basketball seasons here to night in a non-conference game. The contest will count, however, toward the Chancel lor's Trophy which goes each year to the team winning the three-game series. Coach Slats Gill, opening his 31st season, was expected to start Gary Goble and Ted Miller at forwards; soph Karl Anderson at center, and Lee Herman and Jim Anderson at guard. Coach Steve Belko of Ore gon was expected to open with Denny Strickland and Stu Robertson at forward; Dale Herron at center and Chuck Rask and Bud Kuykendall at guard. Kegling Honors To Be Defended Chicago-fllPD-Don Carter of St. Louis and Marian Ladewig of Grand Rapids, Mich., will defend their titles in the World Invitational Match Bowling championships which began a five-day stand at Chicago's coliseum Thurs day. Miss Ladewig and Carter, who captured the top prizes in last year's inaugural tour ney, will engage in an "All Star Preview" along with the full field of entrants on Wed nesday night. The $30,200 event will con clude on Monday when Car ter and Miss Ladewig face surviving challengers in match game competition. SPORTS Phoenix HS Rebuilds in Basketball Phoenix Phoenix High school, . 1958 . Rogue league and District 6 A-2 southern division champion in basket ball, is rebuilding for the new season without a single letter- man on hand. Coach Jack Woodward lost all but one of his last season's squad by graduation. The only junior on that crew, Ter ry Hamilton, has moved, iron ically, to Phoenix, Ariz. The Pirates will open their new slate on Saturday, Dec. 6, but Woodward is not yet ready to name a starting crew for the fray at Yreka, Calif. On the current squad are Bill Dillree, Don MacKintosh, Dave McClurg, Warren Bless ing, Gordon Caster and Dave Barlow, seniors; Mike Reese and Jim Floyd, juniors; Ger ald Sloper and Othar Richey, sophomores, and Mike Cons- bruck, freshman. Jayvees Challenge .Woodward reported- that there are some promising players on Coach Hap Cons brack's 15-man junior varsity who could move up and bump some members of the current varsity crew. Barlow, 6-3, is tallest on the varsity squad. Blessing is 6-2. Slope 6-1, and Caster a shade over 6. The Pirates second game will be at St. Francis of Eugene on Dec. 12. They play Henley on Friday, Dec. 19, and go to Brookings on Dec. 20. Rogue league play starts in January. Neither Henley nor Brook ings will vie in the Rogue league this season. Brookings is now in a coast A-2 district. Henley will play the Rogue league's second place winner for the right to compete in the District 6 playoff. The tour ney will include the top two teams of the Umpqua Valley league, the champ of the Rogue loop and the winner of the Henley - Rogue second place team game. In past recent seasons all members of the southern dis trict have contended in a tournament for the right to face the north division. Members of the Rogue cir cuit for 1958 are Eagle Point, Illinois Valley, Rogue River, Glendale and Phoenix. Preps Will Play In Far Western Corvallis - (UPD A high school division has been add ed to Oregon State's Far West basketball classic this year. R. S. (Spec) Keene, athletic director at OSC, announced over the week end that Marsh field, Roseburg, North Salem and Beaverton have been in vited to participate in the in itial classic. The games will be played Saturday, Dec. 27 and Mon day, Dec. 29. Beaverton plays Roseburg in the first game and North Salem goes against Marshf ield - in .the second game. . Ana tional odds-making syndicate made Iowa, champ ion of the Big Ten a 17-poyit choice over California in the Rose Bowl and listed LSU, the only major team which went through the 1958 campaign unbeaten and untied, as a. 14- point pick over Clemson In the Sugar Bowl. Oklahoma was made strong 141i-point favorite ov er Syracuse in the Orange Bowl, Texas Christian was listed as an eight-point choice over the astonishing Air Force Academy in the Cotton Bowl and Mississippi was a six-point pick over Florida in the Gator Bowl. HOCKEY NATIONAL LEAGUE United Press International The Montreal Canadiens al ways seem to get hot when the weather gets cold. The defending Stanley cup champions put Detroit's first place hopes into the deep freeze temporarily, at least. -by sweeping a week end home-and-home series with the Red Wings. Jean Beliveau scored three goals in leading the Canad iens to a 6-2 victory at Mon treal Saturday night, then Bernie Geoffrion fashioned a hat trick" in helping sink the Red Wings, 7-0, at De troit Sunday night. The twin setbacks dropped the Red Wings into third place, four points back of Montreal and one .n point be hind the Boston Bruins. In other Sunday games, the Toronto Maple Leafs snap ped out of a nine-game win less streak in edging the Bruins, 2-1, and the Chicago Black Hawks gained an up hill 2-2 standoff against the New York Rangers. AMERICAN LEAGUE The Hershey Bears " are within striking distance of first place in the American Hockey league today although they could do no better than break even in week end ac tion. The Bears, scoring early and late, topped Buffalo, 2-0, Sunday night to move to with in two points of the pace-set ting Bisons. In Sunday night's only oth er game, the Providence Reds came from behind to nose out the Rochester Americans, 4-3, at Providence. the Far West classic this year include host Oregon State, Air Force Academy, Wyoming and Iowa. - - The Great Lakes have nat ural deep water except in con necting waterways. Coaches Request OCE Be Named Grid Champion Portland -(UPD- Athletic di rectors and coaches meeting in Portland recommended ov er the weekend to award the 1958 Oregon Collegiate con ference football title to Ore gon College of Education. Oregon Tech won the crown with a 4-0 mark but school of ficials found after the season was over that four ineligible players had been used and forfeited the title. The recommendation will be taken up by the presidents of the colleges at a meeting this month. The coaches also recom mended that the four players involved be stripped of a year's eligibility in football and be eliminated from all conference consideration. Arizona State college, the only other team to sweep 10 games, is one of four "little giants" selected to compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics play offs which will produce the teams for the Holiday Bowl game at St. Petersburg, Fla., Dec. 20. Kearney (Neb.) led the per fect record teams in scoring with 389 points in nine games. Wheaton (111.) was next with 357 in eight. Rochester (N.Y.) allowed the fewest points, 19, in eight starts.
