that the selection of Louisiana
States as college football's na
tional champion "is a wonder
ful honor to the university
and a once-in-a-lifetime ex
perience to members of the
team."
"We had no idea we might
be national champions when
the season started," the 34
year-old coach continued
"But somewhere along the
line we caught fire. It is a
tremendous honor and we are
deeply grateful to United
Press International."

Coaches. .
Twenty-nine of the 35 lead
lng coaches, whose weekly
ratings generally have become
recognized as the most au
thoritative in college football,
picked Louisiana State first
on their final ballots. Four
coaches cast first-place votes
for second-ranked Iowa, one
picked third-ranked Army for
first and the other first-place
vote went to the Air Force
Academy.

Coach Paul Dietzel's Tigers,
who swept through 10 games
to emerge as the nation's only
major undefeated-untied team
and gain a Sugar Bowl berth
opposite Clemson, received a
total of 331 points. LSU thus
fell only 10 points shy of a
perfect score of 350.
Becomes Steady Team
The Tigers, ranked 17th in
the early UPI ratings, became
one of the few steady teams
in an unpredictable 1958 cam
paign. They were the sixth
team to appear at the top of
the UPI ratings during the
first eight weeks but sank
their claws In and held on
after taking over the No. 1
spot Nov. 11.
Louisiana State averaged
27.5 points a game while lim
Iting its victims to a 5.3-point
average. The Tigers started
by whipping Rice and went
on to down Alabama, Hardin
Simmons, Miami (Fla.), Ken
tucky, Florida, Mississippi,
Duke, Mississippi State and
Tulane en route to their best
season in 50 years.
The Tigers had only two
close shaves, edging Florida,
10-7, and Mississippi State,
7-6.
In addition to their 29 first-
place votes, the Tigers re
ceived two for second place,
two for third and one for
fourth. Points are distributed
on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis

college basketball season to
night.
In every section of the
country cage teams that have
been straining at the leash
waiting for the official Dec.
1 starting date will be rushed
into action. Among them will
be many of the top-ranked
teams and players from last
season.
Kentucky, surprise winner
of the NCAA tournament last
spring, has lost all starters ex
cept ace Johnny Cox but,
with tall replacements on
hand, is expected to start an
other triumphant campaign
for Coach Adolph Rupp by
blasting Florida State.
Face Indiana State
Robertson, who racked up
the scoring crown as a scho-
more last year with an aver
age of 35.1 points per game,
will be on view m a home
opening game against Indiana
state.
Little Don Hennon of Pitts
burgh, with Robertson the
only returning member of the
1957-58 UPI All-America
team, also will be "at work,"
leading the Panthers in a visit
to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a
game against Michigan.
Kansas, which had expect

him when it opens the season
against Rice. Chamberlain has
turned professional with the

ern division of the National
Basketball association.
The Philadelphia Warriors,
led by the clutch shooting of
Lenny Rosenbluth, came from
behind to bunk the Knicks,
103-100, Sunday in a nationally-televised
game.
In Sunday's only other
league action, the Minneapo
lis Lakers also staged a late
rally to down the Cincinnati
Royals, 84-77. Elgin Baylor
tossed in 21 points for the
Lakers while Dave Piontek
led the losers with 22.
Nokleby scored Willamina's
only touchdown and wound
up as the state scoring champ.
He wound up with 221 points
in 12 games. He scored on a
53-yard pass play from Bill
McMillan.
Vale took the lead in the
first quarter with Fulwyler
going over from six yards out
and adding the extra point.
Fulwyler carried the ball for
eight of nine times in the
touchdown drive.
Willamina came back in
the second quarter to get the
equalizing touchdown but
couldn't kick the PAT.
It stood at 7-6 until the
fourth quarter when Nokleby
elected to run on fourth down
and missed the first down by
inches.
Vale took over on the Wil
lamina 39 and scored in 15
Dlavs.
The wih was the 24th in a
row for Vale.

Truex ran the 4.1 miles

came ill and could not finish.

extra points. Haskins chipped
in with three touchdowns.
The Huskies scored at least
two touchdowns in every per
iod, tallying three times in
the opening quarter.
Yoncala s only score came
in the thijd quarter.
Merrill rushed and passed
for 456 yards - 329 on .the
ground and 127 m the air.
Maupin personally accounted
for 240 of these yards.

new slate on Saturday, Dec. 6,
but Woodward is not yet
ready to name a starting crew
for the fray at Yreka, Calif.

20. Rogue league play starts
in January.
Neither Henley nor Brook
ings will vie in the Rogue
league this season. Brookings
is now in a coast A-2 district.
Henley will play the Rogue
league's second place winner
for the right to compete in the
District 6 playoff. The tour
ney will include the top two
teams of the Umpqua Valley
league, the champ of the
Rogue loop and the winner of
the Henley - Rogue second
place team game.
In past recent seasons all
members of the southern dis
trict have contended in a
tournament for the right to
face the north division.

cuit for 1958 are Eagle Point,
Illinois Valley, Rogue River,
Glendale and Phoenix.

day's grand windup of the col
lege football season.

Oregon Tech won the crown
with a 4-0 mark but school of
ficials found after the season
was over that four ineligible
players had been used and
forfeited the title.
The recommendation will
be taken up by the presidents
of the colleges at a meeting
this month.
The coaches also recom
mended that the four players
involved be stripped of a
year's eligibility in football
and be eliminated from all
conference consideration.

victories and a Sugar Bowl
berth. Arizona State college,
the only other team to sweep
10 games, is one of four "little
giants" selected to compete in
the National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics play
offs which will produce the
teams for the Holiday Bowl
game at St. Petersburg, Fla.,
Dec. 20.
Kearney (Neb.) led the per
fect record teams in scoring
with 389 points in nine games.
Wheaton (111.) was next with
357 in eight. Rochester (N.Y.)
allowed the fewest points, 19,
in eight starts.
