Almost Half of Americans On Diet, Count Calories By JeEANNE LESEM United Press Inlrenalional New York -fCPD- Oil a diet? Or finding it hard to stay on one? You have lots of com pany. "Over 40 per cent of the American public has to watch their calories," John D. CoCk croft, president of the R. T. French Co. of Rochester, N. Y. told the 16th annual national food editors conference here. And many others who are not counting calories are try ing to stick to a low sodium or other modified diet. ' This growing problem of diets and the need for better eating habits generally were stressed by speakers at the meeting of newspaper food editors from the United States, Hawaii and Canada. Dr. Doris Johnson, dietetics director of Connecticut's Grace-New Haven Commun ity Hospital, emphasized that there are no "magical foods." However, she added, imagin ative cooking, including the use of herbs and spices, can make even a restricted diet attractive. Her claims were supported by a sugar-free, salt-free menu featuring such delicacies as herbed roast lamb, beef strog anoff, cold salmon with Swed ish dill sauce, herbed rice, ap ple chutney and Danish pick led mushrooms. Dietary Delights Even potatoes were men tioned as dietary delights, both at the spice and condi ment dinner (where they were served as low-sodium dishes) and at an earlier meeting sponsored by the Frozen Po- tato Products Institute of Chi cago. , Commercially - prepared frozen French fries, the most popular frozen potato product, probably absorb about half as much fat as the same food pre pared at home, an Institute spokesman said. But low calories or high, French fries lead the frozen potato sales class by a wide margin, he said, and other pre-processed, pre-cooked po tatoes are gaining popularity so fast that the potato peeler may. become obsolete. Automatic Shopper People may also become ob solete, if a bill changer auto matic shopper displayed at the conference also catches the consumers' fancy. The A.B.T. Division of the Atwood Vacuum Machine Co., Rockford, 111., which exhib ited the new automatic shop per, envisions future super markets consisting almost en tirely of these machines. Each would dispense a vari ety of products ranging in price from a few cents up. No cashiers or separate mechani cal change-makers needed be cause each vending machine makes its own change. The tempting variety of new products introduced at the food editors meeting in cluded: An all-butter pecan and cin namon coffee cake, brown and serve . brioche rolls, and 1958 Brussels World's Fair cookies. Frozen individual pumpkin and mince pies. Caramel chips, twin to long- popular chocolate chips. ' Frozen cinnamon coffee cake. In the lower-calorie divi sion, new products now on the market or soon to be include a dry cereal with corn base, in stant whipped potatoes in flake form, and spaghetti sauce and chili mixes. New beverages included concentrated tomato juice; a new, improved instant coffee; and improved non - fat dry milk; and a prepared infant feeding formula made of evaporated milk, maltose-dex trin and vitamin D.
