Dr. Ter- ffc3f ..J hune tells us Dr. Alvarez some of the things we can do to keep sane. Interestingly, he puts first, "Keep up your grooming"; in other words, a woman should take good care of her body and her hair, and should dress as well as she can; a man should shave every day, and keep his clothes clean and well-pressed. Good grooming will add to the person's self respect. Next, he should try to keep some charm to be warm and friendly with peo ple, and to be polite always. All of us should take good care of our physical health. We should avoid undue fa tigue, and should try to keep physically and mentally fit. Many of us do not take care to get enough rest or sleep. Naturally, next day they do not feel fit. We should not fill ourselves with coffee and alcohol and tobacco-smoke. Many of us would do well not to eat so much and so not get fat. Occasional Play Some of us who are very thin need to eat more, and more of the tissue-building foods, such as meat, iish, eggs and milk. Some of us need to take occasional periods of rest and play, mixed-in with our work. Some of us very much need to work. Work is the best stabilizer there is. Some one recently said that the best steadier for a nervous person is a pay-check at the end of the month. Some people need a hobby. Older people should remember that an old dog can learn new tricks. ' As Dr. Terhune says, one of the best things that neu rotic people can do is not to make nests of themselves by talking incessantly about their aches and pains, and the in justices that people have done them. Such behavior brings loneliness because it causes our friends to shun us, and loneliness is very bad for the old. If we want friends to dron in for a visit, we must make them feel that it was worth their while to have come to see us. Quick Recovery Automatic Elec. People must learn to live and let live. We must not keep getting more and more bitter as we grow old. Many of us need to learn that our ways are not the only ways of doing things in this world. How Do They Know? As I write this, I get a letter from a woman who takes me to task for having said some thing that I thought was of concern only to physicians and scientists. She says angrily that God would never approve of such a thing. Every year many peo ple like her write to scold me in this vein, and I always won der how they know so exactly how God feels about every thing. I am sure I don't know how He feels. Another wise thing Dr. Ter hune says is that we should try to complain as little as possible about physical dis comforts. Many of us occa sionally have to suffer a head ache, or a backache, or some indigestion, or a great feeling of fatigue, but why tell every- one around us about it? Dr William Osier used to say to his patients; "Burn your own smoke"; in other words, don't afflict the people around you by telling them in detail about all your discomforts. That will only make you shunned, and if you are shunned you will become a recluse; and if you become a recluse, you will be come queer. Who wants to be queer? Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail. Quesada said Wednesday he COUntinz on CnntrrpQc rn pass legislation to authorize federal grants to improve air ports in a way "essential to the introduction of the jet transport." Miriam should teach Iris to act like a lady. Miriam S. She's a hope less case. Louis S. My wife and I are having a big controversy about my 25-year-old sister, who recently came to stay with us. Iris is a lively, attractive girl, but she's much too inde pendent for her own good. My parents were worried about her not getting married so they sent her to stay with us because we live in a large city where there is lots of so cial activity. Iris immediately got her self involved in a lot of courses and community activi ties, but she always comes and Everybody has a different idea about an electric range 3 The kind of range Mom has doesn't make much difference to JUNIOR-but he sure perked-up when she got her G-E. I think Louis and the family ought to re sign themselves to the fact that Iris will never marry. The things I tell her go in one ear and out the other. Once, when I suggested that she let a man open a door for her, she looked at me as though I were crazy and said: "Why? I can do it myself." I have tried to talk heart-to-heart to Iris, explaining that she'll never land a man if she doesn't learn to be a woman. She said she'd like to marry and have a family, but she can't make a fool out of herself by acting the way I tell her. If she is actually attracted to men as well, she probably stands a good chance of find ing a man who is so sure of his own manliness that he does not require the appear ance of helplessness on the part of a woman. From Miriam's statement, we gather that Iris is not the kind of girl who fights with men for the fun of it and must win every argument. If she is willing to let the man win after proving his argu ment, we can't see where she is committing any breach of behavior.
