Charity Lacking at Christmas Season Like bells and stars and Christmas trees and Santa Claus . . . notj too many years ago there was another won derful "Christmas word" in our vocabulary. It was "char ity." At that time its several sec ondary meanings, one of which is to "help those in need," stemmed always di rectly from its original mean ing . . . "the love of man kind." Today, almost without ex ception, the word "service" has replaced "charity" in re gard to doing a good turn for less fortunate fellowmen. It is indeed sad to speculate on what may have prompted this change. "Service" groups, working sometimes year 'round, have been organized to distribute baskets of food, trees and gifts to the needy for us. This is, of course, a most com menadble institution . . . but even more wonderful if the individuals in and behind the group are truly imbued with charity. "Love of mankind" was the inspiring element for all the acts performed by the Child born in Bethlehem going through His life. For that rea son the virtual loss of the word "charity" is especially felt as Christmas nears. In celebrating His birth this season, let us attempt to strengthen our hope, renew our faith and breathe back life into charity . . . doing what we will for one's fellow men only because our hearts are full of love for others.
