WAIL TRIBUNE. MedforJ, Oregon, Tuesday, November 25. 1938 I 31 TOUCHDOWN BOUND - Don Peek (26), Medford High safety, dashes for the goal on an 89-yard touchdown run against Pendleton in the state semi-final football game here last Saturday; Peek has just headed down the sideline after "turning the corner" with the help of a block by Al Funston. Spilled by'Funston was Pendle Elliott? s Bears Earn Trip To Rose Bowl Second Time San Francisco -IITD- Soft spoken Pete Elliott, the hand some young guiding genius of California's Golden Bears, makes his second trip to the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day when he sends his team into battle against Iowa. If any precedent is needed to point the way, the last time Pete was in the Pasadena sau cer, he was a member of the Michigan team that massacred Southern California, 49-0. California isn't expected to manhandle Iowa in this fash ion but Pete's fans think he may be able to bring his club up to the place where it will give the Hawkeyes a solid bat tle. Iowa is expected to be at least a two-touchdown favor ite. . Elliott suffered in silence in 1957 as he watched his Golden Bears lose nine out of 10 games. And he was ready for more of the same this season when the club lost its first two battles to College of Pacific and Michigan State. Never Gave Up But he never gave up and that's why the team is in the Rose Bowl. Elliott gets ready for all his games by calling every scrim mage during the week. "Every time we have a fum ble during practice," says Pete, "our boys all have or ders to pounce on it just as if it were a regular game." k i f BEAM si 1 p J iHEWDRUfsnNBTBODRBOH mi KEMTUCKYSTRAIGHI BOURBON WHISKEY 2MItJmJbctrttJbr ken( cmM without m ncunM BIS72LI.ERS SINCI 179S IP T JIM BEAM Beam . . .World's Finest Bourbon Since 1795 & PR50F KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY JAMES 8. This may account for the fact that the Bears this year have recovered 11 fumbles from the opposition. He builds up his players all during the year. He has aver aged using 18 sophomores in every game this year; and he has averaged using 34 players per game win or lose. This has resulted in tremendous morale. Right after the Oregon State loss, California had to pull in a pair of third string men to fill in for injured players. It is the first fight for Moyer at the Auditorium here since he lost a decision to Peter Mueller of Germany. Calif., will be held "under almost ideal condi tions," two top United States Olympic officials promised today. "I have no doubt whatso ever that the games will be held as scheduled and will be successful," said J. Lyman Bingham, chairman of the U.S. Olympic committee. Bingham added that "al though recent criticism has caused some unfounded ru mors" about plans for the games "preparations are so far advanced that I cannot conceive of anything short of a major catastrophe, such as a war, that would prevent it from being staged." Phil Woolpert, coach of the usually - successful University of San Francisco Dons, set the key-note address with an announcement that he is "coaching intra-mural bas ketball" this season. Coach Pete Newell of Cali fornia claims that his club is so poor shooting that the bas ket at one end of the court was taken down by the jani tor for repairs and the squad played 45 minutes before it was missed. ' Said Coach Van Sweet of College of Pacific: "We go on tour to play Illinois, Purdue and Cincinnati on successive night. I understand Illinois lost a player from last year's team; and Purdue lost none. "The reason we scheduled Cincinnati was to see Oscar Robertson perform. Personal ly, I'd rather see him on a movie screen." , Sport Parade Mexico City -(UPD- East is east and west is west and, when it comes to golf galler ies, you may also add that north is north and south is south. On top of which, nowhere ever is it expected that any of the various twains therein shall ever meet- It was driven home at the just concluded International Trophy and Canada Cup matches that nowhere, sec tionally, do golf galleries act alike. Proving, probably, that people are people and you can get out of the stew pot just what went in. . You can close your eyes at a golf tournament and tell where you are. An example, the galleries in Japan are quiet and respect ful. Their applause is velvety, much like people clapping with their hands encased in woolen mittens. On American courses the applause contains much famil iar self-association bordering, at times, on rowdyism. There you'll hear raucous yells of "atta boy, Sam," or "yeah you Snead." Get Screaming Ovation In these bull-ring precincts, the applause for a good shot is exactly what you would ex pect of the loquacious Latins. At a bull fight their vocal ap preciation of the courage and audacity of the matador brings forth an eruption of "bueno' 'and "ole, ole." A cascade such as this, con tinuing anywhere up to five minutes if they are frenzied enough, means that el toro's ears are slashed into a separ ate package and delivered to the matador. If the cheers are prolonged, he'll even get the tail. The Latins have shifted this enthusiasm to the golf course and the Canada Cup players found it an unusual bit. Once Snead hit a fine recovery shot to the green, the jammed in gallery smothered him with "oles" and "buenos." The roar simply became stronger as Sam strode onto the green and when he tipped his hat that really brought down the house in another screaming FIGHTS United Presi International Leicester. Eng. Harper, 80, founder and chairman of the Tung-Sol Electric, Inc., Newark, N.J., died Sunday, Coach Bob Feerick of Santa Clara, who expects to win ev ery game he plays, wouldn't hold still for most of this. "We lack height, we lack experience and we lack weight," said Feerick. "But when we lost, the other team wil know it has been in a struggle," Coach Howie Dallmar of Stanford revealed that his team, which is fairly-well sea soned, has a lack of height -and the world's fastest short man. "We have' a boy named John Stahler who is the fast est guy I've ever seen on a basketball floor. In practice sessions our boys complain they can't catch him," said Dallmar. "But when he goes by, I tell them to never mind, he'll be back and they can get a crack at him on the return. "Only trouble with this is the fact that John's a 'small' 5-7." Much, shall we say, in the raised eyebrow precincts of England and Scotland. Claude Harmon, the former Mas ters champion, recalls that once in England he hit what he thought was a good shot to a hidden green. There was nary a sound from the gallery banked around the green and Harmon thought the ball might have been trapped or gone on over. But when he struggled up the hill and approached the green he saw his ball resting just a few inches to the side of the cup. As Claude walked up to his ball, there still was n't a sound from the gallery. Looking sourly around the circle of blank faces, Harmon announced in a voice which could be heard in London: "I guess I pulled it a lit tle." Which, once again drives home the difference in golf galleries. And the pros who competed in the Canada Cup loved it here. It isn't every where that when you hit a good shot you get both ears -and the tail.
