To Rose Bowl Second Time

spoken Pete Elliott, the hand
some young guiding genius of
California's Golden Bears,
makes his second trip to the
Rose Bowl on New Year's Day
when he sends his team into
battle against Iowa.
If any precedent is needed
to point the way, the last time
Pete was in the Pasadena sau
cer, he was a member of the
Michigan team that massacred
Southern California, 49-0.
California isn't expected to
manhandle Iowa in this fash
ion but Pete's fans think he
may be able to bring his club
up to the place where it will
give the Hawkeyes a solid bat
tle. Iowa is expected to be at
least a two-touchdown favor
ite. .
Elliott suffered in silence in
1957 as he watched his Golden
Bears lose nine out of 10
games. And he was ready for
more of the same this season
when the club lost its first two
battles to College of Pacific
and Michigan State.
Never Gave Up
But he never gave up and
that's why the team is in the
Rose Bowl.
Elliott gets ready for all his
games by calling every scrim
mage during the week.
"Every time we have a fum
ble during practice," says
Pete, "our boys all have or
ders to pounce on it just as
if it were a regular game."

fact that the Bears this year
have recovered 11 fumbles
from the opposition.
He builds up his players all
during the year. He has aver
aged using 18 sophomores in
every game this year; and he
has averaged using 34 players
per game win or lose. This
has resulted in tremendous
morale.
Right after the Oregon
State loss, California had to
pull in a pair of third string
men to fill in for injured
players.

tions," two top United States
Olympic officials promised
today.
"I have no doubt whatso
ever that the games will be
held as scheduled and will be
successful," said J. Lyman
Bingham, chairman of the
U.S. Olympic committee.
Bingham added that "al
though recent criticism has
caused some unfounded ru
mors" about plans for the
games "preparations are so
far advanced that I cannot
conceive of anything short of
a major catastrophe, such as
a war, that would prevent it
from being staged."

basketball ranks.
Phil Woolpert, coach of the

of San Francisco Dons, set
the key-note address with an
announcement that he is
"coaching intra-mural bas
ketball" this season.

fornia claims that his club is
so poor shooting that the bas

played 45 minutes before it
was missed. '
Said Coach Van Sweet of
College of Pacific: "We go on
tour to play Illinois, Purdue
and Cincinnati on successive
night. I understand Illinois

team; and Purdue lost none.
"The reason we scheduled
Cincinnati was to see Oscar

ery game he plays, wouldn't
hold still for most of this.
"We lack height, we lack
experience and we lack
weight," said Feerick. "But
when we lost, the other team
wil know it has been in a
struggle,"
Coach Howie Dallmar of
Stanford revealed that his
team, which is fairly-well sea
soned, has a lack of height -and
the world's fastest short
man.
"We have' a boy named
John Stahler who is the fast
est guy I've ever seen on a
basketball floor. In practice
sessions our boys complain
they can't catch him," said
Dallmar. "But when he goes
by, I tell them to never mind,
he'll be back and they can get
a crack at him on the return.
"Only trouble with this is
the fact that John's a 'small'
5-7." Dallmar doesn't list
Stahler as a first-stringer.
But the lad would be interest

circle of blank faces, Harmon
announced in a voice which
could be heard in London:
"I guess I pulled it a lit
tle." Which, once again drives
home the difference in golf
galleries. And the pros who
competed in the Canada Cup
loved it here. It isn't every
where that when you hit a
good shot you get both ears -and
the tail.
