The weather bureau said re mains of the last storm front dissipated over northern Ore gon this morning and that high pressure building over the Tegion should keep Paci fic storms to the northward during the week end. More rain was predicted for the first of next week. The forecast at Corvallis, where Oregon and Oregon State clash in their 62nd foot ball game Saturday, was for artly sunny skies with highs of 55 to 60. The Santiam river at Jeffer son dropped back to an even 13-foot flood stage today from its 17.2 reading of Thurs day. The Willamette river was expected to rise slowly from Salem to the mouth to day and early Saturday. The Willamette was 14.8 feet at Albany, 5.2 feet under the flood level. Editor's note: This Is the second of three dispatches presenUng the views of an American educator on the U.S. and Russian educational systems based on his firsthand study of schools in the U.S. S R. By WILLIAM R. TEASUE UPI Correspondent Kent, O- -flP&- One part of Russia's school system , that Americans can do without, in the opinion of Prof. Gerald Read of Kent State Universi ty, is the authoritarian role of the Soviet teacher. In his visits to Russian schools this year. Read said, he learned that: "The Soviets have rigorous exams and ex tremely formal schools. The teacher is law, and when she speaks you answer what she has said. Youth never ques tions a teacher in Russia." . To illustrate the rigid Rus sian discipline, the Ohio edu cator told of meeting a youth Hearing Resumes On Violation of Convicts' Rights Salem-flJPD-Hearings involv ing alleged violations of con stitutional rights of seven state penitentiary inmates continued today. The hearings began Thurs day with Federal Judge Gus J. Solomon, Portland, presid ing. The inmates contend their rights are being violated when they are confined in iso lation without the . opportu nity of starting court proceed ings, seeing a lawyer or hav ing access to legal papers. Rules Necessary Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton said that such rules are necessary to insure order ly operation of the peniten tiary.. The inmates contend that prisoners going from the seg regation and isolation build ing to court hearings are for bidden to have pen or pencil. The Oregon chapter of the American Civil Liberties Un ion filed a brief in the case at the request of Judge Solo mon as "amicus curiae" - friend of the court. The union set down what it thought were general princi ples that would insure an in mates constitutional rights, but the brief was skeptical that any rights had been vio lated in this particular case To Keep Discipline Bringing the charges were James Q. Anderson, Earl Sherwood, Harry Hendron, Richard E. Williams, George Barbur, Andrew Taylor and Paul R. Bailequx. Members of the State Board of Control, two convicts and prison' officials were expected to appear at today's session. The state maintains that confining prisoners to the iso lation wing without the privi lege of visitors is for infrac tions of prison rules' and a necessary part of keeping prison discipline. Tom Sawyer-Type Doesn't Gel Job Sturbridge, Mass. -(UPD- A 14-year-old Connecticut boy, visiting Old Sturbridge Vil lage, the re-created New Eng land country town, took one look at the rustic mill pond and got an idea. A few days later the Vil lage director received a let ter from Timothey Keith that read: "I have an idea that a boy of the Tom Sawyer type could paddle around your mill pond on a raft made of logs and attract visitors to the Village." ; Timothy -volunteered to be the boy at $35 a week plus room and board. His offer was rejected because the Vil lage represents a period much earlier than that in which Tom Sawyer lived. - who wore a red sweater with a big white "M" on it. After learning the boy was an Am erican student at Miami (Ohio) University, the professor said he deliberately drew him into a heated two-hour argument in the lobby of Hotel Moscow. 'Even ,the Russian pro fessors were amazed,'' Read said. "They just could not understand that an American student would dare to argue with a professor." Would Be Immoral Read explained that this is typical of Communist moral education, which teaches that students must give themselves completely to the state. 'If you have ability to study and do not, in Russia you are immoral. The result is that students memorize and regurgitate facts. "The motivation is 'study or be shunted out to a labor force.' It's a motivation we do not ha,ve in America." Read added that Soviet youths believe in the system and respect knowledge. They have great faith in the state's promises and strongly feel education will lead them to world supremacy. No Salesmen "Typical of their respect for knowledge is the fact there are no salesmen in Rus sia who brag in front of youngsters that they cannot spell, yet drive a Cadillac. It is different from the Ameri can attitude. "In my classes at Kent State, I often hear 'Why do we take this junk? History is junk,' There are no such com plaints in Russia." "If all else fails, there is Siberia for the child and his parents," Read said. "There are few disciplinary prob Most Want To Succeed The professor reported that most students want to suc ceed. Perhaps strongest in their minds is the great free dom of choice they will have after passing the 10 - year exam. All students beyond grade 10 are paid- to study. The better their grades, the more pay they get. "They remind me of Ameri can high school athletes," Read said. "They go from in stitute to institute asking, 'How much will you give me if I come here? How tough are your entrance exams?' Then they choose the best offer." Read added that he does not believe the tests are work ing out. "Those who flunk can hire a tutor, cram, and take the test again. About 90 per cent of the crammers pass on second try. "The desire for higher edu cation is breeding in Russia a class which does not want to work with its hands," Read said. "This in turn leaves workers dissatisfied with their jobs." Business was report ed brisk. r Chisholm, a physician who was then director of the World Health organization, touched off an uproar here by remarking that Santa Claus doesn't really exist. Danes of all ages sprang to the aid of the "jolly old elf," declaring that of course he exists. Copenhagen, Denmark-(DPD A Copenhagen clergyman who called Santa Claus a "pagan goblin" has stirred a storm of protest throughout Santa-lov ing Denmark. The furore caused by the Rev. Paul Nedergaard's re mark has not been equalled here since the day 10 years ago when Canada's Dr. Brock Chisholm broke the news to Denmark that there is no Santa Claus. , ' ' Wrath Aroused Nedergaard's wrath was aroused by the appearance of Animal Trainer Killed by Tigers Ulm, . Germany (UPD Wild animal trainer Horst, Freyer, 25, made the mistake Thurs day of turning his back on five female tigers.. They tore him to pieces. Freyer was putting the fero cious cats through their paces at the Althoff Circus' winter quarters here. He attempted to force the tigresses to form a pyramid. When he turned his back on them, 18-month-old Brahma leaped at him. She forced him to the ground and dug her fangs into his neck. The four other animals immediately sprang on top of him, mauling his body until it no longer was recognizable. Circus officials said Freyer was killed almost immediate ly. "These seals bear a symbol of a pagan goblin," he said. "You should refuse to buy them. Find some other way to aid the welfare organiza tion." The outburst of protest that resulted inspired a strongly critical editorial in the Copen hagen newspaper. "Maybe Santa Claus is a pagan goblin, but the Christ mas tree and mistletoe are not mentioned in the Bible, and yet they have been depicted on the stamps," the editorial said. 1 "Who says their motif has to be religious The purpose is to collect money for chil dren's welfare.
