53 rd Year Medford 2nd SECTION Scienti Adds To Dirty Air, Washington - (C?B -Two sci entists presented more evi dence Wednesday of a link between dirty air and lung cancer. Dr. Thomas F. Mancuso, in dustrial hygiene chief for the Ohio Health Department, call ed air contamination a "high ly probable and important factor" in the higher rate of lung cancer in cities than in rural areas. He said studies showed a. "marked excess" in city lung cancer rates "distinct from smoking patterns" of the vic tims. The U. S. Public Health Service last year found heavy cigarette smoking to be one cause of lung cancer. Its chief, Surgeon General Leroy E. Burney, said Tuesday there was increasing "circumstan tial evidence" that air pollu tion also in, a cause. Increases By Six Both spoke at the National Conference on Air Polution. Mancuso, in a speech pre pared for delivery to the con ference, said statistics . show that the urban lunfe cancer rate "increases by" the size of the city" even when smoking rates remain the same. He said lung cancer rates among non-white city resi dents are higher than among white residents even though the later smoke much more. By VERNON SCOTT (CPD Hollywood Correspondent Hollywood (DPD Tyrone Power, a romantic figure on the screen, cut a romantic swath through the hearts of Filmtown's glamour girls, dat ing many Hollywood sirens, but never settling down to married life-though he made three trips to the altar. In 1936 when he burst to stardom as a dashing broker "Lloyds of London," he was single, slender and hand some. Power became a man-about- town, a nightclub habitue es corting Loretta Young, Janet Gaynor, Sonja Henie and Norma Shearer to the .spots along Sunset Strip. Ty was a "catch," and his popularity burgeoned swiftly as his career sky - rocketed with "In Old Chicago," "Sec ond Honeymoon," "Alexand er's Ragtime Band," "Suez," "Marie Antoinette" and "Jesse James." In 1939. he married French actress Annabella, whose real name was Ann Carpentier. She was' four years older than Power and the . mother of a 9-year-old daughter. To Power it meant the end of his carefree days and it was. For nine years. Enlists in Marines During his marriage to the blonde star Power realized his greatest success, starring in such hits as "The Mark of Zorro," "Blood and Sand," ."The Black Swan" and "A Yank in the RAF." . He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 and became a second lieutenant, serving in Squadron 353 of the Marine Transport Command. Power was based in the Pacific at Kwajalein, Saipan, Okin awa and Kyushu. 5 only $239.95 Like many another star, Ty returned to Hollywood won dering if he could pick up the threads of his career. His doubts were dispelled in 1945 when he scored in "The Razor's Edge." But his tour in the service had changed the happy-go-lucky Power. He came back to civilian life a quieter, more thoughtful man. His thoughts turned to stage, but a firm contract with 20th Century Fox forced him to continue making movies. He divorced Annabella (they had no children) in 1948, and a year and a day later he married lynx-eyed Linda Christian in Rome, dating Lana Turner, among others, between marriages. It proved an expensive and brief marriage. They divorced after six years when Ty agreed to a million-dollar set tlement. Their scraps, public and private, kept gossip colum nists working overtime, but Power said nothing of his personal life. He was devoted to his daughters, Taryn, 5, and Romina Francesca, 8. Even after their divorce in 1955, the dapper actor spent as much time with the young sters as possible. Following his divorce, Pow er sought his life's ambition, to become a star in the legit imate, theater. Free from his studio con tract, he traveled to London to star in the stage version of "Mr. Roberts." His efforts were greeted with luke-warm reviews. Then he toured the United States in "John Brown's Body," convincing his countrymen, at least, that he was a powerful dramatic performer, Then he returned to movie making. But now a new kind of hero was the rage ep itomized by Marlon Brando Patrol Bombers Due Submarine Detection System Burbank, Calif . -(UPD-Some 350 U.S. Navy patrol bombers will soon be equipped with a "new concept" submarine de tection system, it was an nounced by Lockheed Aircraft Corp. The new detection system is regarded as a major break through in anti - submarine warfare techniques, according to Burt C. Monesmith, Lock heed vice president and Cali fornia division general man ager. "It is now possible to lo cate underwater craft at greater ranges than ever be fore," he said. "Use of the highly sensitive and far reach ing new installation will greatly enhance earlier detec tion of enemy submarines." He did not elaborate on the device's capabilities. Immediate Program According to Monesmith, the company will immediately begin a $36 million program to equip some 350 Navy P2V5 and P2V7 Neptune patrol bombers with the new device. Prototypes of the new de vice already have been in stalled on some planes and the same system is being in stalled in new Neptunes now coming off the Burbank pro duction lines of Lockheed. Monesmith said delivery of the first planes with the new device to operating squadrons is scheduled in December. Economic Aid To Poland Considered "Washington -(UPD- The Unit ed States is ready to begin talks on new economic aid for Poland despite Polish Com munist Boss Wladyslaw Go mulka's recent criticisms of this country, it was learned today. The U. S. government is convinced Gomulka still ad heres to his course of semi-in dependence from Moscow de spite his sharp barbs. American officials said Po land recently asked for more help. The United States soon will tell the Polish govern ment it is prepared to talk the matter over and see what can be done. And it was there he died, dressed in costume and grease paint. Tyrone Power, born in Cin cinnati, Ohio, in 1914, follow ed in the tradition of his fam ily. He was an actor. He was a proud, dignified man who sought recognition as a seri ous dramatic performer.
