Wisdom off Solomon CouOd He Needed in Bowl Choice Br HAL WOOD San Francisco -OD- The wisdom of a Solomon will be needed to pick the Pacific Coast Conference representa tive to the Rose Bowl if Cali fornia should lose to Stanford Saturday. And if Southern California, Washington State and Oregon State win their contests. Contrary to a lot of think ing, California is not a shoo in for the Rose Bowl assign ment, win or lose. If the Golden Bears win, they get the automatic nom ination. If they lose, while the other clubs in contention win, the standings will be like this: California. 5-2, USC 5-2, "WSC 6-2 and OSC 6-2. Seven Points Will Mr. Solomon please take it from there, and take these things into considera tion: 1. There is some claim that victories over Idaho," which count in the Pacific Coast California's Bears Leading in Offense Los Angeles -CFfl- The Uni versity of California and the man expected to put them in the Rose Bowl Jan. 1 Joe Kapp dominated Pacific Coast conference statistics to day. California led the league In total offense, with a 315.3 yard average per game, and In rushing with 236.3. Kapp, the versatile quarter back is a cinch to claim the Individual total offense crown with 1131 yards, Including 540 by rushing. The rushing yardage is a record for a Coast league quarterback, but : Kapp has stiff competition for that crown from Willie West, of Oregon, who has gained 436 yards with two games to one for Kapp re maining. . Trailing California in rush ing were Southern California, with a 209 average, and Ore gon, with 200. In total offense, Washington State is second with 313.2, followed by Ore gon, with 97.2. Oregon held its position as the top team in total defense, permitting an average of 218.7 yards per game, against 220 for Washington State and 251.6 by Oregon State. California was eighth in de fense yielding 316.4 yards per game, slightly more than its offensive output. , UO, OSC Top Defense In rushing defense, Oregon and Oregon State ran one- two, yielding 145.5 and 153.1 yards, respectively, followed by Idaho, 158.7. Washington State ranked first in both pass offense and defense for the second week in a row. Its passing attack gained an average of 147.2 yards per game, while the Cougars limited opponents to 56.9 yards per game. Stanford, the worst of the conference teams defensively, held second in passing offense with 144.6, followed by UCLA with 112.1. In pass defense, Oregon was second, giving up 73.2 yards per game, and Southern California third 90.1 yards per game. Stanford's passing stars, Bob Nicolet and Dick Norman rated first and second places in that department, with Nico let gaining 641 yards on 68 completions, and Norman '561 on 63 aerials. Kapp ranked third, completing 52 passes for 591. Chris Burford, another Stanford player, led in pass receptions with 41 for 433 yards, and threatened a seven-year-old record held by Ed Barker of Washington State. sWX :Y v.5a. v. t V'A . 'T . Elimin ating Idaho, that would make all four records 5-2. 2. Tradition says that, if two teams are tied for the lead, the winner of the game between these two clubs goes to the Rose Bowl. But in this situation there is no winner: USC beat Oregon State, Ore gon State beat California, Cal beat Washington State and Washington State beaL. Ore gon State. So they all, more or less, beat each other. 3. But California and USC each beat two of the three opponents in this round-robin. Oregon State , and Wash ington State won only one game in this competition. 4. Faculty representatives from all nine schools are eli gible to vote on the Rose Bowl team-and it doesn't nec essarily have to be the cham pion. However, the North holds the balance of power, with five schools, against four in California. They have been Sticking together quite strong ly during the break-up of the conference. WSC Longest Absent 5. If the balloting ends in a tie, the PCC rules' call for the team that hasn't been there for the longest time to go. In this case, if there was a tie involving all four schools then Washington State would be the winner, because' the Cougars haven't been there since 1931. 6. Off their records against Oregon State and Washington State, the other two teams in contention, it would ap pear Southern California and California have the best chance. 7. If there is a tie between these two schools, then Cali fornia would be the logical choice because the Golden Bears beat the Trojans and the Bears haven't been to the Rose Bowl since 1949.
