Medford, Or.., Salary Rulings Changed by Act San Francisco New sal ary requirements for the ex emption of executive, admin istrative and professional em ployees from the Fair Labor Standards act will go -into ef fect Feb. 2, 1959, Clarence T. Lundquist, administrator of the U. S. labor department's wage and hour and public contracts divisions, has an nounced. Under the revised salary tests, an executive employee, to be exempt from the act's minimum wage and overtime provisions, must be paid a salary of at least $80 per week instead of the $55 now required. Administrative and profes sional employees to be exempt must be paid at least $95 a week instead of $75, as at the present. Lundquist said that regula tions do not require employ ers to pay . these salaries to persons doing executive, ad ministrative or professional work. The new salary tests are for exemption purposes only. The employer'may continue to pay on a basis of a salary, but the act's minimum wage and overtime pay require ments must be met, unless some other statutory exemp tion is applicable, Lundquist noted. The amended salary tests were scheduled for publica tion in the Nov. 18 federal register. EOKA Underground Member Slain Nicosia, Cypms-UPD-British troops today killed Kyriakos Matsis, the second "most wanted" member of the Greek Cypriot EOKA underground organization. The man with the highest price on his head is Col. George Grivas, head of EOKA, the outlawed organi zation which wants union of Cyprus with Greece. The or ganization has been carrying out a campaign of murder and violence against the Brit ish and Turkish Cypriots for more than three years. "It looks pretty dim. Unless they have found shelter of some kind they are probably no longer with us." With those words Sheriffs Sgt. Fred Grim early today expressed the fear of nearly 100 rescuers as they made an other assault on snowbound Mt. Baldy in search of three Tucson Scouts. ' Became Separated Mike Early, 16, Dave Greenberg, 12, and Michael Lanoue, 13, became separated from three hiking compan ions Saturday during a heavy snow storm that lashed southern Arizona and dump ed up to 18 inches of snow on the Santa Rita mountains about 30 miles south of Tuc son. Three of the boys escaped from 9,400-foot Mt. Baldy, but no trace of the other three has been found. "Unless the kids managed to hide in one of the mines or caves which honeycomb Mt. Baldy, there seems little hope for them," Grim said. "We've pretty much checked out all the cabins. May Be Buried "Since there has been no trace of them, it seems they must have got to shelter in one of the caves . or mines right after the storm struck or else they gave up right away. Reg. 79c 43 GIVE County Delays Lease To Airline Company Yreka The Siskiyou coun ty board of supervisors has delayed granting a S50 a month lease to Northern Sky ways, Inc., for further study of the lease. Previously, the board had agreed to a 10-year lease on about an acre of land at the Montague airport and the old Southwest airways offices for Northern Skyways. The new corporation pro poses daily - flights between several northern California communities. The board's decision to de lay granting the lease came on a remark by Supervisor S. C. Jackson, who believed there should be a "recapture clause" in the event a larger airlines would want to use fa cilities at the Montague air port. County Administrator Jess O'Roke was assigned to nego tiating new lease terms. Cordon Sees More O&C Timber Money Portland -(UPD- Former U.S. Sen. Guy Cordon said Tues day he believed there would be an increase of about SI mil lion in receipts next year from-O. & C. timber in 18 western Oregon counties. Cordon said the increase would result from an expect ed boost in lumber demand. He said it was expected re ceipts, next year would reach about $23 million. Counties get half the mon ey, the federal government gets 25 per cent and the rest is endorsd by counties to be used by the government for access roads and reforestation. Cordon is the Washington representative of the Oregon and California Counties Asso ciation. College Girl Appears To Have Clear Title To Moon Guntown, Miss. (UPD Charlene Magers holds claim to a huge,, round piece of real estate, but doubts she'll ever set foot on it. It's the moon. Miss Magers, a student at Mississippi State University, re vealed Tuesday that the claim on the moon was filed on her behalf Oct. 14, 1950, at Tupelo, She apparently has a clear title, too. .When a Knoxville, Tenn., man tried to file a claim recently the U. S. Reclama tion Bureau denied it on the grounds that Miss Magers had beat him to it. Her claim reads: "I, Charlene Magers, am hereby placing claim on this planet's moon, and shall defend said title against any persons or nations that might attack." She has not yet revealed any plans for carrying out such defense. Nor has she voiced any objection to attempts to reach the moon with a rocket. She isn't the only member of her family with a celestial claim. Her cousin, Mitchell Herring, holds title to the planet Mars. " Indian Killed in Portland Collision Portland (UPD Francis Ed Nez, 22-year-old Navajo In dian who moved here recent ly from New Mexico, was in jured fatally in an automobile collision in North Portland late Tuesday. Officers Robert Schippers and Kenneth Lowry said Nez was tnrown trom tne car m which he was riding and struck his head on a post. Police identified the drivers of the cars as Charles R. Ber scheid. 26, Vancouver, Wash., and Mucetel Chischilly, 26. Police said Chischilly and Nez were .employees of the Union Pacific railroad. Arrest Clears Up Mail Bag Thefts Portland, Maine (UPD The theft of $97,000 . from mail bags in a Boston & Maine Railroad train was disclosed today with the arrest of' a pos tal clerk. Postal inspectors said the clerk pilfered mail sacks for the money which Maine banks were sending to the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston. The clerk, identified as Robert S. Doucette, was seized as he was leaving the railroad ter minal here. Authorities said Doucette, a postal transportation clerk, was assigned to trains operat ing between Boston and Port land arid Bangor. He took the money during the night, authorities said. He offered no resistance when captured. Vanguard Rocket Launching Delayed Washington - (UPD - Launch ing of a Vanguard rocket with a fully-instrumented earth sa tellite was postponed Tuesday night until after the close of the International Geophysical Year to permit completion of experiments expected to in crease its value as a reporter from space. The launching had been scheduled as a part of the U.S. program for IGY, which ends Dec. 31. But the National Aeronau tics and Space administration 'announced Tuesday night it would postpone shooting up the remaining Vanguard be cause "a study is now being made ;of ways to increase the reliability of all satellite vehi cles." Grandmother Queen To Reign at Jubilee Cave Junction The Cen tennial Jubilee Queen for 1959 will be from the "sixty ish and over" grandmother set. The decision to make next year's Jubilee Queen a Grand mother Queen was made at the Monday night meeting of the Illinois Valley Jubilee as sociation board of directors. To be at least 60 years old and to be a grandmother are the only two requirements to become a candidate. Registration for the candi dates can' be made with Ed Cooke or with Mrs. Robert Rausch. Judges To Oppose Jurisdiction Change Portland (UPD Oregon county judges indicated Tues day night they will oppose a proposal to place jurisdiction of juvenile cases exclusively in the hands of circuit courts. The judges met at a ban quet prior to today's opening of the 53rd annual conven tion of the Association of Ore gon Counties. A legislative interim com mittee had made the proposal. The county judges said a transfer of the juvenile case load to circuit judges would result in need for additional circuit judges to handle the volume. In some counties of less than 100,000 population coun ty judges have jurisdiction over juvenile matters while in counties of larger popula tion circuit courts are respon sible.
