Statistics released by the PCC commissioner's office also showed Oregon leading in total defense with 222.6 J yards allowed per game. r California's total offense p figure was an average of 316.8 yards per . game. In statistics on individual players, Kapp led in total of fense with 813 yards and was also the rushing leader with 437 yards. At the same time, Bill Aus tin of undefeated Rutgers is within reach of a triple crown in major college rank ings. The "one-man gang" from New Jersey is among the leaders in total offense, rushing yardage and scoring. NCAA Service bureau sta tistics released today show that Milstead has moved into the top position in total of fense with 1,006 yards. The 20-year-old junior has passed for 779 yards and rushed for 227 more. In his last three games, Milstead has account ed for 660 yards, a pace that could almost assure making him the first total yardage champion from his . confer ence since Davey O'Brien of Texas Christian won in 1938. Austin has climbed into third place in total offense, just 76 yards behind Milstead. Austin, the tailback in Rut ger's singlewing offense, is second in rushing and cur rently ' leads the nation in scoring. Bass Paces Rushers Dick Bass of College of the Pacific still holds the rush ing lead. The fleet back has rushed for 700 yards, 44 more than Austin. Lee Grosscup of Utah re mained No. 1 in forward pass ing, but it was Rich Mayo of the Air Force academy who turned in the week's most brilliant aerial show. The high-flying Falcon completed 28 of 45 pass attempts against Oklahoma State last Saturday to move from 34th to fifth in the ratings. Grosscup has completed 64 passes in 112 attempts. He- is followed by Randy Duncan of Iowa (60-112), Ralph Hunsak er of Arizona (60-113), Mil stead (59-103) and Mayo (58- 100). In the major-college team statistics. Army has once again moved into the top spot in total offense. The Cadets, taking full advantage of a 68- 6 rout of Colgate last Satur day, increased their season's average to 408.3 yards pe"r game. Colorado is the rushing leader with a 303.8 per game average and San Jose State is tops in forward passing, gaining an average of 174.3 yards through the air each game. Thornton Kipper Sets Three NW Hurling Marks San Mateo, Calif. -MUPD Thornton Kipper of Lewiston set three Northwest league pitching marks in 1958 "ac cording to league statistics re leased today. Kipper won 23 games, pitched 281 innings and com pleted 32 games. All are new marks. Kipper also had the best earned run mark, 2.72, start ed the most games, 34, and allowed the most runs, 130, the most hits, 269, and fan ned the most hitters, 193. Intm NFL Rushing Figures Led By Brown Philadelphia -(UPD- The Na tional Football league was ,at the halfway point today and from every indication, Jimmy Brown of the Cleveland Browns could crawl to a league record for ground gain ed by rushing in one season. The bulldozing Brown, "held" to a "mere" 113 yards by the New York Giants last Sunday, led the rushers with 928 yards, with rookie team mate Bob Mitchell in second place with 479. Brown has six games left to bombard the record Steve Van Buran set for the Phil adelphia Eagles in 1949, and he s only zib yards away j from bteve s i,i4t yard total. The former Syracuse star is hitting at a 7.1 average yards per carry, a phenomenal 155 yards per game, giving Van Buren's mark about two weeks to stand. Brown also was the leading scorer with 15 touchdowns, just three away from Van Buren's league record of 18 in one season. that way." "Sure, I guess the own ers have a lot invested in their stars and want to protect them but football is supposed to be a rough game. It's all just part of the sport." He said he felt specializa tion was taking something away from players especial ly on the college level. "They don't get a chance to play the game per se. They only get one chance, at either defense or offense. They're not getting the full picture It's sort of like they're living in two dimensions. The club made $15,702. Portland received a 550,000 indemnity payment for loss of territorial rights when the National league moved into California. The team also made $33,836 from two exhi bition games here last spring.
