Oth ers are not recognized as brilliant and capable when they 'are in high school. Pro fessor Abraham says that the gifted child cannot develop all by himself in pre-college days; he needs help. Often he becomes discour aged and apathetic and bored because his teacher is not helpful, and the teaching gen erally is uninspired. The teacher may get tired of see ing only the bright boy raise his hand to answer questions, until finally she -ignores him. Soon she is reporting him to his mother as lazy and per haps even stupid. As Dr. Abraham says, in many cases, while the teacher is struggling to help those many children in her class who find it very hard to learn, she tries to keep the brilliant child busy by having him clean erasers or asking him to do odd jobs around the room. Studied Blueprint Some time ago, while in Berkeley, Calif., looking at the huge atom-smashing beva tron, I studied a big blueprint on the wall showing the de sign of the great machine, with its many complicated at tachments. As I examined this blueprint, it came over me that I did not have a good enough brain ever to under stand the details of such a mass of complicated instru ments. And then I thought to myself that in the big high schools of Berkeley there probably were some three or four boys with the type of brain - mathematical and in ventive enough - to under stand that bevatron, and some day to make a better one, and I wondered if those boys, all of them, would be able to go ahead and study for the 10 or 15 years needed before they could begin to do re search in physics. When the crop of highly gifted boys is so small, surely we must see to it that all of them are used for the great good of our country. We just can't afford to lose any of them.
