MedforJ, Or., Medford, Ashland Drill For Friday Night Hassle No contact scrimmage was scheduled for the Medford high Black Tornado this week as it tuned for Friday evening Southern Oregon conference ' competition. The Tornado goes to Ash ; land for an 8 p.m. encounter. On the basis of its record and greater depth, Medford will be a heavy favorite in the hassle. Medford's crew will be after its seventh straight triumph of the season while Ashland enters the fracas with a two-win, four loss record. Ashland and Medford have met only one common rival. The Tornado won 26 to 0 over Crater which whipped the Grizzlies last week 40 to 13. Both Medford and Ashland this week have their hobbled players. Situation was tough er for short-handed Ashland. Coach Varney Corey of the Grizzlies said that George Moses, 145-pound junior re serve guard, has been con verted to center to fill a gap hit by injury. Steve Picard of Seaside, who was a football star at the coastal school for three1 sea sons, will operate at the wing back, or right half, spot in the Oregon State Rook single wing attack. The Frosh have Rickie Lamb, who starred at North Marion high school. Lamb and Sam Spooner of San Diego will be at halfback spots for the Ducklings. It will be the first time in 10 years the Rooks and Frosh have played here. Local Eighth Grade Clubs Vie McLoughlin and Hedrick eighth grade football elevens wrap up their seasons with a "civil war". brush on Friday. The Eulldogs and Hornets will mix at 3:30 p.m. at the Hedrick field. McLoughlin's ninth will play the Crater freshmen at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Central Point. The teams play at Klamath Falls. Coach Leonard Warren re ported that the morale of his clrfo" seemed good arid that Monday drill, which concen trated on offense, went well. However, he felt that much was left to be desired after work yesterday on defense. Plays run against the first line defensive crew gained on both the ground and in the air. Tougher Foe Crater anticipates tougher competition this week than it met against Ashland last Fri day and Warren is holding out hope that Comet defense will be at least as tough against Klamath as it was against the Grizzlies. Fullback Kerman Bennett, who ran well against Ashland despite a sciatic . ailment, is still pestered by his hip and back trouble. Defensive end Derell Williamson is hobbled by a knee injury suffered in the Ashland game. The football ruckus will be the third between the two schools. Crater won both in 1956 and 1957 and Klamath will aim to regain its prestige as a larger school. The Peli cans will attempt to gain some consolation in a dismal season. Klamath has won only one of its seven games this fall. Crater will aim to end its season on a winning note. It has four victories against three losses. Michigan Athletes Face Football Gambling Count Ann Arbor, Mich. - (UPD- Two top University of Michi gan athletes and four other students stood mute today at their arraignment as mem bers of a 10,000 a week foot ball card gambling ring. The six, including first string fullback Tony Rio and basketball captain Jack Lew is, both of Chicago, were re leased on bonds of $150 each after Municipal Judge Fran cis O'Brien entered a plea of innocent for them. A seventh defendant, John Miller, Detroit, did not ap pear for the morning arraign ment. He was expected to be arraigned later today. Judge O'Brien set seperate dates for the trials of the six who were arraigned. Rio's trial was set for Nov. 20 and Lewis' trial was set for Nov. 19. Kapp's total offense figure is 763 yards, according to of ficial PCC statistics released today, compared to 459 for Don Long, the no longer eli gible UCLA tailback. Bob Newman, Washington State's passing star, is third with 457 yards. But Newman still held the No. 1 position in passing, de spite an injury early in the USC game last week. He has 49 completions for 511 yards, and six -touchdowns, with a percentage of .653. Bob Nico let of Stanford vaulted into second place after a good game against UCLA with 431 yards on 41 completions, with Long third-36 for 396 yards. Charles Morrell of Wash ington State trails Kapp in rushing, 322 to 409 yards, with Willie West of Oregon holding third on 278 yards. Kapp has gained 354 yards by passing, on 30 completions in 50 attempts - a .600 mark. California's Bill Patton still is the top scorer in the league with 50 points, while Ken Hall of Idaho is next with 27. Gail Cogdill, Wash ington State, Kapp and Jack Hart, also California, each has 26. Chris Burford of Stanford replaced Dick Wallen, UCLA, as the top pass receiver with 25 for 284 yards, with Bob Dehlinger, Idaho, in second on 22 completions, and 233 yards. That's the task confronting opponents of the Cleveland Browns and their backfield scourges. Jimmv Brown and rookie Bob Mitchell. Between them, they've netted 1.229 yards in five games to date. Brown, of course, has every thing in the offense world wrapped up in the rushing bracket - total yardage with 815 in 118 carries for a 6.9- yard average, an average of 163 yards per game and 14 touchdowns scored. All this, with seven games to go! Mitchell, with 414 yards in 53 carries for a 7.8 average, was in second place in the statistics, leading with a com fortable 90 yards over third place Lennie Moore of the Baltimore Colts. Moore Third Moore jumped from sixth place to third, with Willie Galiimore of the Chicago Bears holding fourth place with 323 yards and Tommy Wilson of Los Angeles drop ping from third to fifth with 302. The big bump among the passers came when Babe Pa rilli of Green Bay, profiting on a fat afternoon against the Philadelphia Eagles, jumped into first place in a shift which tumbled previous lead er Eddie LeBaron of the Wash ington Redskins to third. Parilli, who threw three touchdowns in the Packers first victory, posted a 9.95 yard average gain for each pass thrown this season. Y Organizing Volleyball Loop A volleyball league is being organized at the Young Men's Christian association for any one interested in participat ing. Chairman of the league is Jay Pierce. The league is for all business or club groups in the city. Teams entered at this time are Presbyterian Men's club, Methodist Men's club, Lum bermen, Teachers and Insur ance Men's team.
