Holmes, Hatfield Turn To Multnomah County for Windup Salem-l?D-Both Gov. Rob ert D. Holmes and his Republi can rival, Secretary of State Mark Hatfield, will wind up their election bids with a sharp accent on Multnomah county and its 281,283 regis tered voters. While neither candidate was "telegraphing his punch es" there remained the possi bility of some last-minute fire works before next Tuesday's deadline. Democrats have a majority of 35,000 voters in the crucial In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS Sign of the times: The Wall Street Journal re ports that reprinted dime novels of the 1880's are going like hot cakes at 85 CENTS! -That's INFLATION for you. 1 ACK in their heyday, these paper-back thrillers were contraband. They were smug gled from hand to hand-like marijuana in these more mod ern days. In a generation nourished on Louisa May Al cotfs Little Men, Little Wom en, Rose in Bloom, Eight Cousins, etc., and Horatio Al ger's Struggling Upward and Other Works-with Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe permitted in certain households, - but gen erally frowned on because it dealt with low characters such as outlaws-these dime novels were strong meat. Much too strong, it was felt, for adolescent literary stom achs. When they were read (which was oftener than was generally known among par ents and guardians) they were read out in the haymow. AH, Me! How times have changed. In these days, I'd say.Vthe fact that people are cheer . fully planking down 85 cents lor these dime novels of yes teryear and ACTUALLY READING THEM in prefer ence to a lot of the trash avail able on the paper-back racks is a distinctly GOOD sign. It indicates, perhaps, that out literary tastes are IM PROVING. OPEAKING of inflation & You've noted undoubted ly, if you're at all interested in such things, that the Fed eral Reserve Board (generally referred to in the jargon of the security markets as "the Fed) has raised margin re quirements for stock pur chases from 70 per cent to 90 per cent. -- That is to say: If you want to purchase stocks, you must now put up 90 per cent of the purchase price in cash. For some months past, it had been necessary to put up only 70 per cent in cash. Prior to that time, for a long period, stocks could be bought with a cash payment of only 50 per cent of the purchase price. llfHATS "the Fed" up to? ' The answer is rather simple. IT'S PUTTING ITS FOOT ON THE BRAKE. "PVERYONE who drives a car, I suppose, has felt the temptation, on topping a hill and seeing a long, straight, downhill road ahead to LET 'ER ROLLL. It's fun. And- As long as the road stays straight and only gently slop ing it's quite OX. But- If beyond what seems to be a gentle curve there comes a series of SHARP curves, with perhaps a cliff on one side, the pleasant whoosh down the gentle decline may have fatal consequences. It would have been better to put on the brake sooner. "The Fed" is seeking to put on the brake in time. Air Operations Man Gets Orders Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.-flJPft-Things really began to pop when the word "may- day" was heard on the phone. "Mayday" is the interna tional aircraft distress call. The sound of it galvanized the Air Force ground control in terception station here into placing all emergency meas ures into immediate effect. The control staff had no doubt of the call's authentic ity, since it came from the operations office at this Air Force base where a world wide weapons meet is being held. A bit of clarification re turned the situation to nor mal. The caller explained that he was Airman 1C Jerome Mayday, of operations, and that he was calling on a rou tine matter.
