Equipment company of Ruch has contracted with the forest service to do 195 hours of bulldozer work in con tour trenching in the head of Silver Fork, according to Vern Taylor, district ranger here. The forest service is sepnd ing $3,000 on the project, and Billy Joe Hunter of Ruch has started operations with Jack Crump of Medford as engi neer. Other winter activity in the forest will include log ging on Sturgis Fork, where the Double D Lumber com pany of Medford has pur chased 14 million board feet of timber. The company has started construction on. six miles of road in the area, and will work most of the winter. Mike Ober has contracted for the timber. A new member, added to the Applegate district staff, is the appointment of Charles Kivers, graduate of the Michi gan college of mines at Houghton, Mich., as a junior forester, who will assist Rob ert Sorber in timber sales. Nivers arrived here last month. With the week end storm, lookouts have been dismiss ed, including Paul Stibran at Whiskey Peak, Harold Von Stein on Dutchman's Peak, Don LaRose on Squaw Peak, and Ike Coffman at Cinnibar. Fire guards off duty now in clude Robert Dowell at Stur gis, Vohn Steel at Hutton, Bu ford Wells at Perks Pasture, and im Turnbough at Cook and Green. The suppression crew of seven men working under Francis Gregory were released with opening of schools last month. Bill Shannon is teaching chorus and band at Nestucca high school at Cloverdale near Salem. Shannon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Shannon, graduated from Willamette university at Salem in June. Louis (DaDDy) Jones has been ill at Sacred Heart hos pital the past week, ones' son, Jack, and daughter, Mrs. bu san. Wright, of San Carlos, Calif., were here last week visiting. Three local men bringing home their deer from Bly area are Ed Flesher, Stanley Larson, and Rex Davis. Ricky Davis accompanied the men. Work on a central library is underway at Ruch school, where it is planned later to have a ' community library and reading room for adults. Mrs. Lucille McKemie, fourth and fifth grade teache, and a trained librarian, is' classify ing the school books at pres ent. It is expected that state and county assistance will be available for the community library. A room in the old building has been remodeled for library and music room. Nelson Pursel under went major surgery at Sacred Heart hospital early last week, and is making good re covery. Mrs. George Brown spoke on growing chrysanthemums at the meeting of Applegate Valley Garden club held at the home of Mrs. Robert Sor ber Wednesday. Several doz en varities of the flowers were on hand to illustrate her talk. Friends visiting Mrs. Grace McDaniel at Jacksonville San itarium find her busy answer ing letters to ner many friends, as well as doing a bit of fancy work and keep ing up with events. Mrs. Mc Daniel formerly lived here, and observed her 80th birth day in August. Mrs. E. E. Cox and Mrs. Otis Buck visited recently at the home of Mrs. Anna Cater on Hillcrest rd. in Medford. Monday will be the last chance that beginning square dancers will have to register for classes at Upper Apple gate Grange hall. The Grange is sponsoring a series of 12 classes being held on Mon days from 8 to 10 p.m., which are taught by "Buzz" Dibble of Medford. Twelve couples are registered now, and those in charge would like to have that many more enter the classes. Saturday night square dances are postponed for the present. Local women had an oppor tunity to meet Mrs. Evelyn Nye, Republican candidate for state representative,, at a coffee hour at the home of Mrs. John Horner Wednes day. Visitors came from one to five. Mrs. Bereth Hopkins, county clerk seeking reelect ion was entertained at a sim ilar event at the 'home of Mrs. Chester Kubli earlier in the month. He said the kidnaper ap parently was holding his friend in custody today. Dodie Lee Champion, 37. stumbled into the Red Bluff police . station Monday to tell of the spine-tingling ride with an unidentified friend and the fully armed abductor. Police Chief Marion L. Clay said he felt there was "more to this story than has been told" but began a "through" investigation on the basis of Champion's statements. Clay declined to release the name of the man apparent ly still being held by the kid naper. He also refused to re lease the abductor's identity. He quoted Champion as say ing that he and the friend were, stopped for a traffic signal in Sacramento Sunday evening en route home when the man forced his way into the car at gunpoint. Champion said the man in structed them to take him to a bus station where he picked turned Saturday from her state forestry summer look out post on Round Top in Evans Creek area. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Farrand have purchased property at Eureka, and are residing there, they have written friends here. Mr. and Mrs. Gearhardt left Wed nesday for a hunting trip to eastern Oregon, and are ex pected to be joined at Bly by Mr. and Mrs. Lester Rich. Members of the Ruch PTA are preparing for the Hal loween carnival Oct. 31. En tertainment is planned. Jim, Butch, and Ed Fossen were among those getting their deer quota in the snow on Dutchman's peak. Rural Reflections: As cozy a relationship between man and beast as one expects to find is evident at the Ger ald Buck home about sunset when several of Gerand's 14 sheep come around to greet visitors and get their share of love and attention. There are Martha, George, and Abraham winking at callers, then there come April, June, Nancy and Brownie, as Mrs. Buck explains the naming of each sheep. Speaking of names, there are the neigh bors who call their new para keet "Beanblossom." Daily's U-Drive Medford Airport The victim said the pair then was forced to drive to an isolated area north of Red ding where the gunman forced Champion's friend to . tape Champion's hands with black tape and stuff him in the trunk. Then they drove back . to Red Bluff and parked the car in a downtown area and Champion's companion left on foot with the bandit. Cham pion kicked out the back seat of the car andichewed the tape off with his teeth. EVIDENCE VISIBLE Aldershot, England-(DPD-All 32 workers in a. cosmetics fac tory were fined Monday for stealing when the evidence was found on their faces. The flags of four countries France, England, Spain and the United States have been flown over Michigan. The salty Bras d'Or Lakes of Cape Breton Island, an inlet of the Atlantic, cover about 450 square miles. OSC Will Get Reactor License Washington' - (UPD - The Atomic Energy Commission has closed it plans to issue a 20-year license to Oregon State College to operate a low-power teaching reactor on state's campus at Corvallis. It said the license will be issued unless a request for a hearing is filed with the AEC within the next 15 days. The reactor will cost about 895,000. It will be financed from a $165,900 grant made earlier this year as part of the commission's educational assistance program. The Col lege will provide operating funds. The College plans to pur chase an AGN-201 reactor from Aerojet-General Nucle onics of San Ramon, Calif. The reactor will be used for instructional purposes in var ious fields of nuclear fields of nuclear technology. It will operate at a maximum power level of 100 milli-watts. WRITER DIES Chur, Switzerland (UPD Theodore Kroeger, 61, whose books have been translated into 14 languages, died at a clinic Friday. The Hugh Scovells recent ly moved to town from the Applegate, are remodeling the home they purchased. The Ancel Pearce home, re cently ravaged by fire, is now almost completely re built with a new roof, white exterior, , and new plaster ap plied last week on the in terior. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Law rence are repainting a house which they recently pur chased here. Many others are engaged in. similar activities. New residents in town are Mr. and Mrs. George Russell and children. They have pur chased the old Whitney home on South Oregon st. The transaction was made by Homefinders Real Estate. Three home town boys home on furlough after fin ishing basic training are Clin tin Whitney, Philip Winning ham and James Moore. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Tuttle recently returned from a business trip to Los Angeles, Air Force To Launch Satellite Los Angeles - (UPD - The Air Force is scheduled to launch a satellite from Vandenburg Air Force Base 200 miles north of here "in the period December - January," it has been reported here. The first American launch ing of a satellite from some location other than Cape Ca naveral, Fla., as now sched uled could occur during either of those two months, depend ing upon the "best" condi tions in that period, spokes men said. A T h o r intercontinental ballistic missile will be fired a week ahead of time to test launching facilities, equip ment and personnel at the base, which has been build ing up as a second Cape Canaveral. described as the only place where a satellite with a north- south orbit could be launch ed. ILEA MOTORS Bartlelt at 5th St., Medford Pearl Whitney reports that funeral services were held last Wednesday in Lake City, Wash., for her niece, Mrs. Mary Winningham Stickle, a native and one-time resident of Jacksonville. Mrs. Stickle was born in Jacksonville in 1891, the daughter of the late Mark and Nancy Winning ham and attended school in Jacksonville. Her husband, Fred Stickle, survives. . Survivors in this area include Mrs. Ella Rus sell Mrs. William Winning ham of Medford, James Win ningham, Pearl Whitney of Jacksonville, Ed Pence, and Minus Pence of Central Point. Mrs. Pearl Kitchen re turned this week from a visit with her sister, Mrs. H. M. Channing, of Montesano, Wash. En route home she spent two days in Portland. The Rev. and Mrs. Elwood Irby and two-year-old daugh ter Carla Rae, have arrived Clatskanie. Mr. Irby will be pastor of the Jacksonville As sembly of God church. Both Rev. and Mrs. Irby attended Northwests Bible college in Seattle. He majored in theol ogy and Mrs. Irvy in Chris tian education. They pioneered and estab lished a church in Napoleon, Ohio, living the three years. They were, in Clatskanie for four years where Mr. Irby was youth leader in that sec tion for the Christ Ambassa dor department of the Assem bly churches. He began hold ing services here last week. Eddie Graham, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Graham was hospitalized this, week after suffering an eye injury at football practice.
