FS Work Is Started

R. Equipment company of
Ruch has contracted with the
forest service to do 195 hours
of bulldozer work in con
tour trenching in the head
of Silver Fork, according to
Vern Taylor, district ranger
here.
The forest service is sepnd
ing $3,000 on the project, and
Billy Joe Hunter of Ruch has
started operations with Jack
Crump of Medford as engi
neer. Other winter activity in
the forest will include log
ging on Sturgis Fork, where
the Double D Lumber com
pany of Medford has pur
chased 14 million board feet
of timber. The company has
started construction on. six
miles of road in the area, and
will work most of the winter.
Mike Ober has contracted for
the timber.
A new member, added to
the Applegate district staff, is
the appointment of Charles
Kivers, graduate of the Michi
gan college of mines at
Houghton, Mich., as a junior
forester, who will assist Rob
ert Sorber in timber sales.
Nivers arrived here last
month.
With the week end storm,
lookouts have been dismiss
ed, including Paul Stibran at
Whiskey Peak, Harold Von
Stein on Dutchman's Peak,
Don LaRose on Squaw Peak,
and Ike Coffman at Cinnibar.

is underway at Ruch school,
where it is planned later to
have a ' community library
and reading room for adults.
Mrs. Lucille McKemie, fourth
and fifth grade teache, and a
trained librarian, is' classify
ing the school books at pres
ent. It is expected that state
and county assistance will be
available for the community
library. A room in the old
building has been remodeled
for library and music room.

Valley Garden club held at

Monday will be the last
chance that beginning square
dancers will have to register
for classes at Upper Apple
gate Grange hall. The Grange
is sponsoring a series of 12
classes being held on Mon
days from 8 to 10 p.m., which
are taught by "Buzz" Dibble
of Medford. Twelve couples
are registered now, and those
in charge would like to have
that many more enter the
classes. Saturday night
square dances are postponed
for the present.

Nye, Republican candidate
for state representative,, at a
coffee hour at the home of
Mrs. John Horner Wednes
day. Visitors came from one

Fall Chores Being Done

weather making its slightly
belated appearance with a
first fall rain, residents here
are engaged in the annual
fall chores of raking and
burning leaves, pruning
shrubs and "picking up"

back resting interval for a

the name of the man apparent
ly still being held by the kid
naper. He also refused to re
lease the abductor's identity.
He quoted Champion as say
ing that he and the friend
were, stopped for a traffic
signal in Sacramento Sunday
evening en route home when
the man forced his way into
the car at gunpoint.

Reactor License
Washington' - (UPD - The
Atomic Energy Commission
has closed it plans to issue a
20-year license to Oregon
State College to operate a
low-power teaching reactor on
state's campus at Corvallis.
It said the license will be
issued unless a request for a
hearing is filed with the AEC
within the next 15 days.
The reactor will cost about
895,000. It will be financed
from a $165,900 grant made
earlier this year as part of
the commission's educational
assistance program. The Col
lege will provide operating
funds.
The College plans to pur
chase an AGN-201 reactor
from Aerojet-General Nucle
onics of San Ramon, Calif.
The reactor will be used for
instructional purposes in var
ious fields of nuclear fields
of nuclear technology. It will
operate at a maximum power
level of 100 milli-watts.

funeral services were held
last Wednesday in Lake City,
Wash., for her niece, Mrs.
Mary Winningham Stickle, a
native and one-time resident
of Jacksonville. Mrs. Stickle
was born in Jacksonville in
1891, the daughter of the late
Mark and Nancy Winning
ham and attended school in
Jacksonville.
Her husband, Fred Stickle,
survives. . Survivors in this
area include Mrs. Ella Rus
sell Mrs. William Winning
ham of Medford, James Win
ningham, Pearl Whitney of
Jacksonville, Ed Pence, and
Minus Pence of Central
Point.
Mrs. Pearl Kitchen re
turned this week from a visit
with her sister, Mrs. H. M.
Channing, of Montesano,
Wash. En route home she
spent two days in Portland.
The Rev. and Mrs. Elwood
Irby and two-year-old daugh
ter Carla Rae, have arrived

pastor of the Jacksonville As
sembly of God church. Both
Rev. and Mrs. Irby attended
Northwests Bible college in
Seattle. He majored in theol
ogy and Mrs. Irvy in Chris
tian education.
They pioneered and estab
lished a church in Napoleon,
Ohio, living the three years.
They were, in Clatskanie for
four years where Mr. Irby
was youth leader in that sec
tion for the Christ Ambassa
dor department of the Assem
bly churches. He began hold
ing services here last week.
Eddie Graham, son of Mr.
and Mrs. E. O. Graham was
hospitalized this, week after
suffering an eye injury at
football practice. He is not al
lowed visitors.
