Hawks Defeat Pistons 104-103 Uniied Press International The two defending cham pions got off winging in the new National Basketball as sociation campaign. The St. Louis Hawks, last season's playoff w i n n e rs, opened their season Thursday night with a 104-103 victory over the Detroit Pistons on the Hawks' home court George Yardley, the 1957 58 league scoring champion, tossed in 28 points for, the Pis tons. Bob Pqttit led the win ners with 23 points. Ross to Speak To Sportsmen Central Point-Frank Earl Ross; Medford, engineer with the bureau of reclamation, will speak at the Monday, Oct. 27, meeting of Central Point Sportsmen's club. - The meeting will be at 8 p.m. at the clubhouse. Koss will discuss fishing and hunt ing in relationship to the Tal ent division reclamation project. All persons interested are invited to the meeting. The Sportsmen are now meeting on the fourth Mon day of each month. Portland - (UPD - Coach Joe Huston of Lewis and Clark announced a change in his starting lineup for the game with Linfield at McMinnville Saturday night, possibly to get more beef into the line. He announced that Ben Lawver, a Klamath Falls junior, would replace Wally Sparks at tackle. Sparks weights 283 pounds, Lawver 290. I of De troit with all the confidence of youth and experience, Wil son sped over the 30-mile Sa hara Cup course on Lake Mead to win from Miss Bar dahl by a quarter of a lap but still fell six points behind the second-place boat for the na tional unlimited hydroplane championship. West German Equestrian Club Leads in Show Harrisblrg, Pa. - (UPD - The United States equestrian team faced an almost imposible task today in its bid to catch its West German rivals in the Pennsylvania National HorSe Show. . Hans Winkler rode off with the individual championship of the show Thursday night and thereby pushed his West German mates farther ahead in the team scoring with 93 points. The U.S. team, led by Bill Steinkraus, Westport, Conn., and Hugh Wiley, Towson, Md., remained in second place with 49 points. The Yanks now must win the three remaining events while holding the Germans scoreless to capture the team trophy.
