Ford Assembles Model T On Golden Anniversary Of First 'Tin Lizzie' . Mahwah, JO.-TOPD-Ford Mo tor Co. turned out what un doubtedly will be the last Model T ever assembled today to commemorate the golden anniversary of the first "Tin Lizzie." The 1909 Model T rolls off the assembly line at Ford's as sembly plant here inter- spersed between two bright and shining 1959 models. Immediately . afterward the Model T, the world's first mass production automobile and an American symbol of frugal operation, will partici pate in an economy contest with one of the 1959 Fords. 13 Miles Par Gallon Air Force Offers Anti-Collision Plan San Bernardino, Calif. -(UPD -The Air Force proposed . a four-point plan Wednesday for reducing the number of air collisions. The plan, recommended by Col. Lawrence S. Lightner, deputy chief of staff for Air Force operations, at the fourth world wide Flying Safety Officers Conference attended by 300 civilian and military delegates included: The use of high-visibility paint on military planes, ex cept those aircraft required to fly overseas missions. The removal of all mili tary flight practice areas used by other aircraft. The designation on all aeronautical maps and charts the areas where heavy mili tary aircraft training takes place. The improvement of ra dar control of airplanes and tWe expansion of long-range radar facilities. - ? STRIKE THREAT Havana (UPD Informed sources said today the rebels may try again this month to start an anti-government gen eral strike despite the failure of two previous efforts. They said the pre-government CTU 'Union Federation has warned its locals to be on guard against a terror campaign, starting "about Oct. 28," in an effort to frighten people into heeding general strike orders. The Model T, driven at its top speed of 20 miles an hour, averages about 13 mileswper gallon. The new Ford, when driven at a conservative 30 miles an hour for best gaso line economy, uses about 24 miles per gallon. Actually, the ModelT- twin lever job was not new. It was reconstructed from parts obtained from antique car hobbyists throughout the nation. The bulk of the antique unit was purchased from John Skaff, a Flint, Mich., furniture dealer who collects antique cars as a hobby. Some of the parts simply were not available. New wheels, for example, could not be found and were made especially for the goldn anniversary Model T by a Ne wark, N.J., company. The fen ders were made by a San Luis Obispo, Calif., shop and the upholstery and touring car top was done by a custom shop near Detroit. Six Feet Shorter Although Ford produced al most 15 million model T's (all black) the last one in 1927 only the first 1,000 were twin lever jobs. Only about a doz en are believed to exist today. The-"new" model T is 2Vz feet taller and 6 feet shorter than the 1959 model, with a four-cylinder I engine of 22 horsepower. It will be donated to the Edison Institute for dis play in the Henry Ford Mu seum in Dearborn, Mich. Ironically, the model T, is valued by museum authorities at about $5,000 about twice the price of a 1959 Ford. Review Proposals District Highway Engineer Sam Helwer and others re viewed four proposals which were estimated to cost be tween $28.5 and $30.3 mil lion. Three proposals involve construction of a tunnel un der Oregon mountain just south of the Oregon-Californ ia state line. The fourth pro posal is for a route without a tunnel, but costs were shown as second high among the four alternates. Collier and others indicated that the tunnel would receive first priority. The section of road extends from the Ore gon line to about three miles north of Idlewild, a distance varying from 5.4 to 6.7 miles, depending on which propos al is considered. Cost of the section would range - from $5.5 to $7.3 million. The route favored by those attending this week's meeting was one 5.4 miles in length costing an estimated $6 mil lion. Longer Section The longer section of relo cation, which would be built when funds become available, is 17.2 miles long and extends from one mile south of Gas quet to connect with the tun nel section. Estimated cost is $23 million. Engineers said they would expect to acquire property for a full "freeway" 80 feet wide for four lanes. Initial con struction would be two lanes with a third, creeping lane for slower vehicles over the hills. Officials said the Californ ia highway commission is expected to approve plans when they are presented. When the plans would be sub mitted was not known, and HELP US!
