ILLINOIS VALLEY Panel Discussion Set By RUTH RAUSCH Cave Junction A panel discussion on teenage prob lems will be conducted by Judge Orval J. Millard, Dr William J. Moore, John Wat terau, Grants Pass juvenile officer and the Rev. Gene Denning at the Illinois Valley High school PTA meeting Thursday, Oct. 23, at the High school. A progress report will also be given on the PTA minstrel show, "Georgia Jubilee, which will be presented this year as the organizations one money making project, which is used for the PTA scholar ship fund. It is hoped the show will net enough to meet the scholarship requirements and provide enough more to furnish a curtain for the new high school stage. MrsJ Clyde Connors of Mc Cleray, Wash., mother of James Cooke, has been visit ing friends and relatives in the valley for the past two weeks. Mrs. Connors is the former Lela Parsons of O'Brien. The Illinois Valley Cham ber of Commerce has named Mrs. Valeria Rauber as repre sentative to the public hear ing and discussion on the routing of the re-location of highway 199 from Gasquet, which will be the first step in the improvement program for Route 199. The meeting will be in Crescent City on Monday, Oct. 20. Mrs. Rauber will report the results of the meeting to the chamber. Being an out of state resident, she will have no voice in the hearing. Two engagements have been announced this week. Lorna Jeanne Tycer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Tycer to Donald D. Warren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Warren of Selma. Both are graduates of Illinois Valley high school. The bride - elect graduated with the class of 1958 and is now employed at the Valley Drug. The armual dollar party of the Cave Junction Commu nity church Missionary Soci ety was held on Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Bert Scott in Kerby. The dollar each member contributes to the mission work fund must be a dollar she has earned and must be accompanied by a poem tell ing how the dollar was earn ed. There were 17 poems and dollars sent to the meeting to be read from former resi dents of the Valley who have continued to participate throughout the years. The to tal receipts of the party amounted to $42.50. Hostess, Mrs. Bert Scott, served refreshments of jello and gingerbread with whip ped cream, coffee and tea. The women of the O'Brien Community church have col lected gifts for 250 children. which will be sent to the mis sionary in Mexico for distri- b u 1 1 o n at Christmastime Some of the gifts were donat ed, some the church purchas ed and a great many of them were made by the church women. The Illinois Valley Civic Women's league combined a Halloween party and October birthday celebration at their social meeting Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Vester Kirk in O'Brien. World's Largest Opal Reaches U.S. New York HJPD An opal worth ogling arrives by ship today. It is valued at $175,000, weighs 125 pounds and is called the "Panther." Owner Eliott Glasser, president of Panther International, said the opal, found in an aban doned mine in Austria is the biggest known to exist in the world. Glasser said he would try to sell the opal in one piece, possibly to a museum. He said there would be no security precautions when the giant gem is unloaded from the freighter Pioneer Gem. "Who would be able to run away with a 125-pound stone all crated?" ha asked. Negroes Test Driver Opfion Birmingham, Ala. (LTD Charges filed Monday against 13 Negroes set the stage for a legal test of Birmingham's "driver option" policy on bus seating. The Negroes, nine men and four women, were lodged in city jail Monday on charges of disorderly conduct, conspi racy to commit a breach of the peace and conspiracy to cause a breach of the peace, They were placed under bond of S900 each. The Negroes boarded two buses and took front seats seats Monday after a meeting with integration leader Rev. F. L. Shuttleworth. The action followed the city . commis sion's recent repeal of bus segregation laws and adoption of a substitute ordinance leav ing the seating of passengers up to the Birmingham Transit Co. The seating laws had been under attack in the courts. Polio Vaccination Lack Risks Health Washington-(UPD-Arthur S Flemming, secretary of Health Education and Welfare, warn ed Monday that lack of polio vaccinations is "needlessly risking the health and hap piness of thousands of our children and young people." Flemming said the number of paralytic polio cases in creased this year for the first time since the Salk vaccine became available. He blamed indifference" on the part of parents for a lag in vaccina tions. He told a news conference that there were 1,815 cases of paralytic polio during the first nine months of this year, 238 more than in the same period of 1957. Properly Tax Bill Jolts Householders Portland (UPD Many house holders in Multnomah county got a jolt Monday when their property tax "notices arrived in the mail: Taxes have gone upi The county assessor and tax collection department said property taxation is up an average of about 13 per cent over last year. Listing some of the factors involved. As sessor Wiley Smith said in some cases residential land was reappraised and at 100 per cent of true cash value which shifted part of the tax burden paid by commercial property to residential prop erty. Also, last year's state Leg islature revised a law so that taxpayers in Portland are pay ing a rural school tax for the first time. In addition, taxpayers approved bond is sues last spring calling for new tax levies this fall. Extension Course Start Postponed An extension course con cerning the emotional prob lems of children, in and out of the classroom, which was scheduled to begin Wednes day, Oct. 22, has been post poned, it was reported today The first class will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19. The delay is caused by the illness of the instructor, Dr. Edward M. Scott, consulting psychologist for the state board of health. 443 CLUB NEWS Eagle Point Sheep Club The Eagle Point Sheep club met Oct. 13 at the R. C. Dow ell home.
