Peace Force Plan Opens New Front United Nations, N.Y.-tPJ-Secretary General Dag Ham xnarskjold'i suggestions for a U.N. peace force opened a new East-West front in the United Nations General As sembly today. Russia led the attack Wed nesday with a Moscow radio charge that the secretary gen eral's plan was an attempt to carry out America's old, ex tremely unpopular colonialist policy. A spokesman for the Ameri can U.N. delegation said the United States looked "with favor" on the plan. The assembly's main politi cal committee met today to discuss disarmament, but con troversy centered on the plan outlined Wednesday by Ham-marskjold. It was not only a char acter role, but there was no music, no funny props, no costumes to depend on. Loved New Role "For the first time in my life I played somebody other than Danny Kaye, and I loved it," the funnyman said. Danny liked the change of pace so well he is starring in his second straight role, play ing the life story of musician Red Nichols in "The Five Pennies." Again, Danny draws ' on warm, sentimental humor in stead of the explosive jokes that rocked his audiences in "Up in Arms" and "Knock on Wood." "The transition was easy for me," he continued. "But I could not have done it 10 years ago. For one thing, I've grown older, and if a man matures in his thinking he comes to a point where he must try a new avenue in his career. That's what happened to me. Insight Gained "All my travels for the United Nations have given me an insight into people and situations that I never under stood before. "I realize now that people have to see some humor in the tragic moments of life if they are to survive. Humor and tragedy are very close." Danny's personality off screen has undergone a meta morphosis comparable with his movie revolution. He's no longer the wisecracking, flip character he once was. He seldom raises his voice or mugs it up, for laughts - but there's still a twinkle in his eye. , "A new carfier has opened up for me," Danny concluded. "Now I have an opportunity to do a different type of pic ture every time I go to the post." It is expected to be America's answer to problem of putting man into space. Earthquake Felt In Imperial Desert . Brawley, Cali.-IUPD-A roll ing, rumbling earthquake jolt ed .this Imperial Desert area at 10 a.m. p.s.t. Thursday and was followed within three minutes by a lesser quake. The sharp jolt was felt in Brawley, Westmoreland and Calipatrio and police received some reports of merchandise falling off store shelves and of cracked plaster. Dr. Charles Ricnter at the California Institute of Tech nology in Pasadena, Calif .', said the temblor registered with an intensity of "not over 3Vz" on the scale of 10. He placed the center of the quake at 100 miles distant from Cal Tech or slightly north of Brawley. Richard Nixon Says XI5 Has Helped Country Regain Race to Control Space; Ship En Route to Test Base Inglewood, Calif. (UPD Rocket ship X-15, which Vice President Richard M. Nixon says already has helped the United States recapture the race to control space, got per haps its "slowest ride" last night aboard a truck to the Edwards Air Force Base test station. The complex and highly in tegrated machine that Ameri ca hopes will beat- the Rus sians in manned space flight was rolled out of its hangar for the first time Wednesday. Brig. Gen. Marcus F. Coop er, commander of the Air Force's Edwards Flight Cen ter, commented - that land based trucking to Edwards "probably will be the slow est ride it will ever get." Sometime in February, 1959, Gen. Cooper said, as suming that all has gone well, Hatfield Signs Budget Forecast Salem -(UPD Secretary of State Mark Hatfield said Thursday he had signed "re luctantly and under protest" a budgetary forecast released by the State Finance Depart ment and State Tax Commis sion Wednesday. The report indicated that the 1959 Legislature would be able to work with from $285 to $310 million as a re source estimate. In a summary-of resources and expenditures for the cur rent biennium, the report also indicated the state I would have a surplus of about $33 million as of June 30, 1959. This was an increase of about three million dollars as a result of reduced spend--ing in many departments. The report, approved by the Board of Control, includ ed this comment: "Considering such ' factors as inflation, recession, recov ery from recession, continued economic growth, it appears resources may be available to meet the minimum re quirements of the next biennium." 'the aircraft will be taken aloft ' for its first- flight by Scott Crossfield (test pilot) of North American Aviation." After initial glide tests, the X15 is expected to fly 100 to 150 miles above the earth, and at speeds between 4,000 to 4,500 miles an hour. Nixon, who also is on a po litical campaign tour, depart ed from his prepared text at the unveiling ceremony to declare flatly that the com bination of a lunar probe rocket plus the X15's exis tence gave tnis country an edge "despite a few setbacks and disappointments." "With the X15 following the magnificent achievement of the Pioneer (the moon rocket), Americans can proudly say today that we have moved into first place in the race to outer space," Nixon said. (Dutch) Kindelberger, chairman of the board at North American Aviation -r prime contractor for the XI 5 -conceded that the research vemcie opened a new era, "one of the historic moments in aviation." He said the black, low-slung craft mark ed "both an end and a be ginning." "By its bold step into near airless space, it demonstrates that we are approaching the end of flight exploration within the envelope of the atmosphere," Kindelberger said. "With the X15 we begin to leave the limitation below us and tap the endless pos sibilities of space."
