SEPt 22 :P2a 29-40-451 '64 67-74 The Medical I. 1 CRAMPS THAT KILL SWIMMERS I am asked why people get cramps and die while swim ming, and I have to say I don't know I have never seen any satis factory ex planation. We don't even know that the man who dies in the water dies of a cramp. Be- Dr. Alvare cause he is dead, he can't tell us what got him into distress. Perhaps some of my read ers who nearly died in the water and were rescued will write and tell us what ac tually happened. Some men suspect that the cramps come because the person is swim ming in very cold water, and this is conceivable. When I was a boy, I was brought up in Hawaii where my pals and I wents swim ming almost every day and often for hours at a time, and I can't remember anyone who died in the water, or had a cramp. But in Hawaii the water is fairly warm. It is hard for a physician to figure out how a cramp - granting that the person had one - could disable him sufficiently so that he would drown. Old Folk Idea Some people think that the cramp comes because the per son went swimming too soon after a meal. So far as I k'qow, this is just an old folk- idea. I know that when l was a boy, my pals and I com monly dived into the water right after lunch, and we never had any trouble. I doubt if there is any real scientific reason for the admonition that one shouldn't go swim ming right after a meal. One thing is certain, and this is that even an excellent swimmer should not go far out in a cold lake by himself, and especially at night when no one is around. Then if he gets into trouble, there is no one there to help him. It is probable that many of those cases in which a per son past middle age died in the water, he had a heart at tack or a stroke. My impres sion is strong that any good swimmer who dies in the water must have lost con sciousness for some reason. A ton of coal makes 1,400 pounds of coke and about 10,000 feet of fuel gas. Because it doesn't take much exertion to stay afloat, either sitting in the water, or floating on one's back. One difficulty with many men is that they haven't the normal amount of sense in regard to self-preservation. In my mountain climbing days I used to know some men who would start out all alone to climb a dangerous mountain, perhaps in winter, without telling , anyone where they were going. Obviously, if the man were to slip and break his leg, he would die a miser able death without any hope of rescue. TV TROUBLES? DIAL SP 2-5702 for Expert Repairing.
