Family Council Edna L. I can't stand Grandma. Mrs. L. L. She must show respect for the aged. Edna L. I am a 12-year old girl and I'm so miserable at home I'm just about to run away. It's all because of my grand mother. She came to live with us recently and I have to share my room with her. It's just awful. I have no privacy at all. When my friends come in, Grandma just deliberate ly walks in and starts fussing around the room. But that's not the worst of it. Grandma bosses our whole house. She even bawls out Mother for talking too long on the telephone or for not wearing the right clothes or not fixing the house the way she would like it. She tells Dad he ought to get a differ ent job and get Mother more nice things. I'm the only one with enough nerve to talk back to Grandma. Mrt. L. L. My Mother has always been the domin eering type and I don't think anything can be , done to change her at her age. I have a brother who would be willing to have her visit with him for at least half the year, but she doesn't get along with his wife. Natural ly, I am more willing to be patient with her. We have tried to get Mother Interested in getting her own apartment, but she is really too old to be so lonely. She has no friends of her own and depends on me completely to provide her with entertain ment. I am trying to get Edna to realize that she must have respect for the aged that she too will be old and un wanted some day. The Council: We're all for respect for the aged, but we do feel the aged also owe some respect to the young. It is the moral duty of the young to be patient with physical and mental infirmi ties in the aged, to offer com fort and affection, but we don't feel it is necessary or right for them to accept the tyranny of the aged. Of course Edna is all wrong to talk back to her grand mother,, but it is not unreas onable for her to want some privacy or to take offense when her grandmother in trudes on areas that are not her province. It is asking quite a lot of a 12-year-old girl to force her to swallow all her resentment against in justice. Yes, it is difficult to change the habits of the aged, but in all fairness to her family, Mrs. L. L. should make the effort. She must get her moth er to understand that this household and family belong to her alone, and if the elder ly woman wishes to be part of it she must accept a minor role. We believe that if Mrs. L. L. stands up for her own rights and those of her fam ily, Edna will be far more willing to exercise a little re straint when necessary.
