EAGLE POINT Safety Record Lauded MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Monday, October 13, 1958 By LAURA A. McFALL Eagle Point-A safety meet ing and steak dinner was held at the Medford hotel recently for the truck drivers and maintenance men of the Steve O. Wilson Logging company. The dinner was given by Insurance agent Don Stathos. The teams won a steak din ner for driving for a period of several months without any chargeable accidents. , The accident rate per 100, 000 miles is much lower than the national average, accord ing to the National Safety council, of which Steve Wil son is a member. The drivers work for the safety awards that are given by the safety council. t The drivers are divided into two teams and the ones with less accidents are given a steak dinner while the loos ing team has a hamburger dinner. At this meeting two films were shown on safe truck driving supplied by the state highway department. In the state of Oregon, Steve- Wilson logging and lumber truck drivers are re ported to have one of the low est accident rates in the in dustry. . - . The Eagle Point Home Ex tension unit met at the home of Mrs. Vin Vaughn with the silver tea for the first fall meeting of the year. Mrs. Don Kimmer,' chairman, presided. The chairmen for the year are Mrs. Hoyl Jordon, vice chair man; Mrs. Larry Wilson, sec retary; Mrs.Bennie Hefley, treasurer; Mrs. David Kahl, news correspondent. EntertainmenFwas furnish ed by Misses Diane and Ce cilia Putman with accordion duets. Lana McGraw gave a reading, Vicki Ragsdale sang, accompanied by Mrs. Floyd Pollock. ' Refreshments were served by the officers. The next meet ing will be at the home of Mrs. Ray Chamberlain, Brownsboro road, Thursday, Oct. 9, at 10:30 a.m. The les son is to be on Christmas crafts and will be led" by Mrs. Harry Hanscom, Mrs. Victor Hay and Mrs. Bob Walch. Mrs. C. H. Davis, Fortuna, Calif., spent a week recently at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Henderson. ' Jackson, Crater Lake high way, and friends in the valley, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Nelson motored to Eugene to- take his son, Bert Jr., to Eugene, where he will enter his fresh man year at the University of Oregon. They also motored on to Sweet Home, Ore., to visit Mr. and Mrs, Loris Sims, re turning home on Sunday. There will be vocational agriculture ' adult education classes held at the Eagle Point High school. Farm tractor and machinery maintenance, taught by C. L. (Blackie) Gun ter of Hubbard-Wray, Med ford, will commence on Tues day, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Gas and arc welding skills, taught by Ed. Learning, head shop foreman for Steve Wil son Logging of White City, will start on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. This will be sim ilar to the welding course of fered last year.1 - All classes will be held at the vocational agriculture building and each class will be restricted to 15 adults. Brown, 223 North C st., returned recently from Portland, where she at tended the 50th wedding anni versary of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Rippey, Baker. The celebra tion was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. Evan L. Moore of 415 South B St., Eagle Point, left last week for then- new home at Tempe, Ariz They sold their property to Mr and Mrs. Bert J. McMen omev of Malta. Mont., sister of Clarence P. Henderson, 215 South B st. Mrs. Fern Carothers and Johnnie, and Mavis Peters moved to Tempe, Ariz., early in September. Mrs. Carothers is, teaching cleaning and press ing at the boarding school, Thunderbird academy, at Scottsdale, Ariz. : The property is being rent ed at this time by Mr. and Mrs. Odus Sweet and family. Herbert Lusk, Palo Alto, Calif., returned Oct. 8 to his home after visiting, at the home of his parents, Mr. Mrs. James C. Lusk, South C st. and! I 303 Mrs. C. A-Van Ness, Ronan, Mont., and niece. Miss Phyllis Van Ness, returned Oct. 4 af ter spending six weeks at the home t)f her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clar ence P. Henderson. They were here to attend the wedding of her granddaughter, Joanne Henderson, and James A Pond Sept. 6. Waldo Hull returned re cently after spending a two week vacation visiting rela tives at Vancouver and Cen tralia, Wash. En route to Washington he stopped at Cot tage Grove and his sister, Mrs. Rufus Arne, and Clair accom panied Hull on his trip. Mrs. Elizabeth Ottosen re turned to Medford Oct. 6 from Costa Mesa, Calif., where she has been staying with rela tives. She entered the Rogue Valley hospital that day for treatment. Mr. and Mrs. David Kahl re turned through the Black Hills of South Dakota, and the Grand Coulee dam and visit- pH at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Goodwin and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Goodwin, brothers of Mrs. Kahl, and at the home of her friends, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Watson, Herm- iston, before returning home Mr. and Mrs. David Jack son and daughter, Sherri, Oakland. Calif., have been The Women's Missionary so- ciety of the Eagle Point Com munity Bible church will hold an all-day meeting at the church Opt. 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The ladies will roll bandages and make quilt tops, and mend clothes for boxes to be sent to missionaries soon. The business-meeting will be at 1 p.m. There will be a potluck luncheon with the ladies fur nishing salads' and dessert. The hostesses will be Mrs. Francis W. Terry Jr. and Mrs. Fred Canterbury. The ladies of the mission ary recently made a trip to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sturgill at Hugo. The Missionary society met for the September meeting at the home of Mrs. Ray Cham berlain, with Mrs. Bennie Hef ley as co-hostess. Rainier Park, Longmire, Wash., and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Simmons, Me.dford, were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Simmons and family at 319 South C st. Thursday, Oct. 9. Mr. and Mrs. Peters and Susan have been visiting at the home of her father, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Simmons, 319 Mary st., Medford, for the past few days and were ex pected to leave Saturday for southern California where they will visit his relatives.. Juveniles Spray Car With Bullets Torrance,. CaM.-fllPD-A car load of juvenile hoodlums roared through a street Sun day night and indiscriminate ly spraygd it with bullets. One 14-year-old boy was wounded and a woman and girl nar rowly escaped. Robert Hernandez Luna, 14, was wounded in the left foot with a .22 caliber slug. Mrs. Helen Ranees Brengar ten, 49, and a 13-year-old girl, both walking along the streets at the time, were missed by the hail of "bullets. Police in the suburban Los Angeles city said the youths apparently were members of a juvenile gang. CAMERAMAN KILLED New York - (UPD - Roy Ed wards, 62, a veteran newsreel cameraman, was killed Sun day when the helicopter he was riding on a picture job crashed in the Hudson river. The pilot of the craft, William Schoomaker, 37, of Trumbull, Conn., was missing and pre sumed dead.
