PISCES - feb. 20 MAR 21 4- 5-10-245S 01-42-74 The Medical Roundup Or Alvarez Efforts at Modernizing Laws on Homosexuality As I will keep pointing out in this, column, there is a great need for modernizing some of our ancient laws laws that were based long ago on re- 1 i g i o u s and medical ideas that were held in the Middle Ages, or even 3 0 00 years ago. Educated persons know that, even in enlightened Eng land, thousands of lonely and crabbed old women suffering from a senescent form of psy chosis, were cruelly tortured and then hanged as witches. The ministers of the gospel who used to approve of this form of sadism were follow ing the - injunction in the Bible which says,-"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" (Exodus 22.18). ,Fortunately, about a hundred years ago people became so civilized and sensible that they no longer would believe all the nonsense about the ability of FAUVES' PAINTER DIES Chartres, France-(UPD-Maur- ice de Vlaminck, one of the last of the "Fauves" paint ers who shocked the art world" in the early years of the cen tury with . its bdld, bright- color style, was buried quiet ly Sunday in the little village cemetery at nearby Rueil. ' The laws were not changed, but people just got tired of seeing the women stripped naked and tortured and half drowned. ' It was no longer fun to watch the proceedings. People's stomachs were turned. Something Wrong Recently, it has been becom ing clear to educated people in England that there is some thing terribly wrong -with the law which enables crooks and dishonest detectives to frame and blackmail and even jail two adult men whose crime is that they share an apartment! A fine committee of men was appointed to investigate the matter, and after some study, they urged that the law be changed and made to con form with modern medical psychiatric knowledge. I was much pleased to read that the leaders in the Church of Eng land favored the change, and now I see in the papers that the ministers at the Methodist Conference at Newcastle on Tyne approved the proposal for a new law. Sprue Some people are asking, What is sprue? There are two kinds one, the tropical sprue and another, the non-tropical sprue. They are alike in that the main symptom is usually a chronic diarrhea, often with whitish gas-filled bowel move ments. The patient may lose much ' weight and strength, and may develop a severe anemia of what is called a primary type. This is due, not to the oozing of blood from an ulcer in the body; it is due to some defect in the bloodform ing organs. In the old days, in China, sprue was treated often very successfully, with a thick soup made out of liver. Today, we give much folic acid plus vita min B12. , ' Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests, for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail.
